petemcd85: < Gottschalk: I have organized a collection titled The Best Games of Eugenio Torre Game Collection: The Best Games of Eugenio Torre and would like to see it among the game collections you show below the Notable Tournaments (on the page that refers to E. Torre, of course). Could you solve that, please?> Yes, We will update you once the inclusion has been made.

MissScarlett: Humpy's four games have now been deleted from the DB. There was no need to do this! They just needed to be parked elsewhere.

MissScarlett: <cg> is an end in itself. Game type has never been a mandatory tag in PGNs here. Why fuss now?

DaltriDiluvi: The Olga PGN viewer is looking very strange when you make a move on the board. It was not a problem yesterday, but today I've seen it on two computers (both of which are using the Chrome browser). The problem is hard to describe in text only, but just try playing through a random game - if the problem is there you'll notice it.

The pgn4web viewer is working OK for me.

Please try just a little - a hint or two at least.

OK, I'll give it a try. Whenever I move a piece or a pawn it briefly appears on a wrong square before settling on the correct square. It may even appear outside the board entirely.

For example, let's say I play the move <1.e2-e4> in the opening position. First, a white pawn briefly appears right above the black king on e8; if the board had nine rows you would call this position "e9". Then the pawn on e9 disappears and it's replaced by a pawn on e4. The end result of the move is as expected, but it's confusing to look at the transition from position A (pawn on e2) to B (pawn on e4). It's like White plays <1.e2-e9-e4> instead of <1.e2-e4>.

Using a notation similar to "<1.e2-e9-e4>", a Ruy Lopez goes something like this:

<1.e2-e9-e4 e7-e11-e5 2.Ng1-f8-f3 Nb8-c12-c6 3.Bf1-b10-b5>.

If the browser sidebar is scrolled down a little you may not be able to see locations such as "e11" or "c12". I haven't tried to see what happens if you flip the board so that the black pieces are at the bottom.

By the way: Since my previous post I've seen this problem on a third computer, this time using Firefox as the browser.

Jun-10-23  stone free or die: <DaltriDiluvi> Thanks for the elaboration.

Yes, I believe I've noticed that problem as well, but not as drastic as you've described. For me the piece movement animation is simply "jerky" - the piece doesn't travel in a straight line from origin to destination, and it doesn't move smoothly.

I haven't seen it jump discontinuously with such large movements as you've described though.

Have you tried the <pgn4web> viewer?

When I use the alternative viewer I don't see any animation problems, so I'd be curious as to your situation.

Thanks.

DaltriDiluvi: Yes, the pgn4web viewer works fine for me. (I also mentioned this in my first post about the problem).
Jun-10-23  stone free or die: Oh yes, sorry, I see it on rereading.
Jun-10-23  stone free or die: FWIW - I'm not an admin, but I think that <Olga> is slightly orphaned at the moment - so getting a fix on the priority list done might take a while.

I believe <CG> had originally hired out the <Olga> programming to someone no longer here (i.e. <steve> and <pete>).

I.e. Christopher Dean being the man <Daniel> hired a number a few years back, gone on to other projects presumably.

<<Inspiration:>

Chessgames.com has been plagued with terrible PGN viewers for years. PGN4Web and other Java based viewers had no ability to create new variations and no Stockfish integration. Olga solves these problems and much more.>

I also think he developed a Olga++ version called <Aria> which accounts a bit more for <Olga>'s current state.

Jun-10-23  Cysticcandy2: Guys! There is something wrong. Whenever i try to go through a the moves of a game , it appears that the pieces are being dragged down from the top of the screen before finally settling down on the correct square. It suddenly started happening today.. can anyone help me? Please.
Jun-10-23  stone free or die: Oh, now I see what <DaltriDiluvi> was talking about - it's not anything subtle like the "jerky" problem I mentioned.

It's blatant and recent.

<CG> must have done a change to <Olga> just recently.

Please back it out.

(Did you guys check before doing the update? Do you have a testing sandbox yet?)

I'm getting that when I go through the game moves. Worse than that, it won't let me play alternative moves.
