|
| Jul-08-07 | | Eyal: I can't see the games yet, but according to the final standings (http://www.icu.ie/tournaments/displ...) Dom drew his last game and finished 30-38 out of 52, with 4/9. |
|
| Jul-09-07 | | Dr.Lecter: <WBP> Believe it or not, I posted a similar post in the kibitzer's cafe few months back as well. It seems that I'm one of the odd ones |

| Jul-09-07 | | chessmoron: <Jess> Did you get "Ask the Dust" by John Fante out of your library YET? |
|
Jul-09-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Eyal> that's a solid result for a strong open tournament IMO. Well done <Dom>!
btw, It's 11:00 pm "normal time" and I'm at my friend's house. Apparently my laptop is still semi-functional, I brought it with me and am typing on it right now. Heh.
If you feel like chatting at MIDNIGHT I'll be signed in, just in case. BIG INTERVIEW TOMORROW, then it's off to the LIBERRY to get some <Borges>, <Fante>, and if I know me a <messa chess books>. AWHOOGA I'm going to Japan!! |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <jessicafischerqueen: And if pigs had wings they could fly.> I'm afraid that normal wings could not support a pig very well. Admittedly, if a winged pig were to jump off a skyscraper, it might be able to fly a short distance (at least downwards), after which it would be all over but the sausages. However, if a pig would have the wings, the shape and the motors of a Boeing 747, it is possible that it might be able to fly (supposing it wouldn't be incontinent and spill its fuel all around, of course) Pigs, you see, do not fly. It's practically one of the things that defines a pig. But if you gave a bird wings, it could fly. That's practically one of the things that defines a bird (even if it's not true from all of them). If you gave Pavel Blatny a metaphorical pair of wings, he could metaphorically fly. That's one of the things that defines a World Champion. |

| Jul-09-07 | | Tomlinsky: <SwitchingQuylthulg> That's exactly the situation where my newly patented 'Pigachute' comes in very useful. |

| Jul-09-07 | | Karpova: Hey <jessicafischerqueen>! <jessicafischerqueen: <Tal> looks like death warmed over> <Some years later when I chided him for reckless disregard of his health – I had quit smoking and strongly advocated that he do the same – he smiled broadly and said, "Ah, but is life worth living if you have to worry about so many things?">

 | | jessicafischerqueen: ROFL <pigachute>!!! Hang on, if Pigs had BIG ENOUGH WINGS they could fly. A pig weighs a lot less than a <pterodactyl>. Or a <Boeing 747>, for that matter. And what about the flight speed of an <African Swallow>? Is it sufficient to carry a coconut from Africa to England? Or are you suggesting coconuts MIGRATE?? |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Karpova> thanks again for the wonderful link!! I just finished going through the first full game in my new <Tal> book, and it's so wonderful that there is a <games collection> with all the full games from the book here at CG.com. |

You're at 249 great going!
Here is a million dollar question..
Will Federer break the slam record before you overtake <EA> ? |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <Hang on, if Pigs had BIG ENOUGH WINGS they could fly. A pig weighs a lot less than a <pterodactyl>. Or a <Boeing 747>, for that matter.> You also weigh less than a Boeing 747. (At least I suppose this is the case...) So by this logic, you could fly with big enough wings. For the purposes of testing your hypothesis, let's give you wings and have you jumping from the top of a skyscraper. (You can choose between wings of a swallow, wings of an albatross, wings of a pig and wings of a Boeing 747. Use of no other device or means of remaining up, including but not limited to para- and pigachutes, is allowed.) Flying safely back to ground should be easy for a comparatively light entity such as you, no? As for coconuts, it's common knowledge that they are actually cleverly disguised alien creatures from outer space which fly from one continent to another on the backs of their domestic flying pigs but the government hushes it up. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: RE: PNE agriculatural fair gone terrbilry awry, when a host of Turkeys were dropped from airplanes over the fairgrounds. After this debacle, the PNE director explaind to the Press: <As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly> |
|
| Jul-09-07 | | hitman84: PNE director need to undergo a witness test. |
|
| Jul-09-07 | | Tomlinsky: If the turkeys had been fitted with our new 'RectoJets' the whole town would have received ready-cooked meals for Thanksgiving. Slightly ahead of schedule but it's the thought that counts. |

| Jul-09-07 | | WBP: <Dom> leaves for a week, and we're talking about flying pigs. (Reasonable enough--buffalo can fly, since that's where they get Buffalo wings.) I wonder what we'd be talking about if he were away for a month! <Jess> <<Bill> Oldest trick in the book!!> But where can I obtain this obviously invaluable book? And it's fitting it should be a trick, as Tal was the Wizard of Latvia. (I have a brother who is a magician--he can turn anything into an argument.) <Dr Lecter> <<WBP> Believe it or not, I posted a similar post in the kibitzer's cafe few months back as well. | Jul-09-07 | | Eyal: <talking about flying pigs> Or perhaps it's inspired by the <Book of the Month> ("The time has come," the Walrus said,/"To talk of many things:/ Of shoes - and ships - and sealing-wax/ Of cabbages - and kings/ And why the sea is boiling hot/ And whether pigs have wings.") |

| Jul-09-07 | | WBP: <Eyal> <Or perhaps it's inspired by the <Book of the Month>> I guess this just goes to show how holistic or interconnected Chessgames.com really is! |

 | | TheAlchemist: <Jess> Hey! How are you? I'm sorry I haven't been around much lately, I had to study, now I have some more free time for a couple of months, yay! I have just finished a nice game, and I posted it in my forum (TheAlchemist chessforum), I thought you might like it. Take care! |
|
Jul-09-07
 | | TheAlchemist: I also see you have been posting some Tal anecdotes lately, I'll post some about various players in the near future, I'll let you know. GM Adrian Mikhalchishin has a column in a chess monthly here and often writes about his recollections on famous players, I have posted some already: Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian Boris Spassky Anatoli Karpov Heikki M J Westerinen Robert James Fischer Rudolf Spielmann |

| Jul-10-07 | | Karpova: <“In the Moscow Olympiad of 1956 I lost my game against Szabó. I missed a chance to win, and obviously was not in a great mood. Szabó started explaining that even if I had not missed the crucial combination he would still have had a chance to draw. A young Russian Jew stopped next to our analysis board and said politely but with complete assurance, ‘you wouldn’t have had a chance to draw in that case’, and instantly started to show us the variations which could have occurred, at lightning speed. His analysis was brilliant and convincing. This was how I met Mikhail Tal.”>

| Jul-10-07 | | Karpova: <acirce: I really like that line - <If you think that beating Kasparov is something exceptional, you don't respect yourself as a chess player.> Read some of the stuff Kramnik used to say and you will begin to understand why he and only he could beat Kasparov in a match.> Reminds me of this game:
Kasparov vs Leko, 2000
Leko had the final position on his birthday cake (21. birthday) |
