| Sep-12-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: <Branko> thanks so much- way too long since you've dropped by here. <Mrs. Alekhine> is alive and kicking but I'm not sure where she might be tonight. This is a banner day for celebration of your return- I can palpably feel the website growing "weller" since you came back. We've been discussing you recently at various fora so be sure to "search kibbutz" your own name if you want to see all the Gossip (about you!) heh |

 | | Annie K.: <Branko> nice to see you around here again! :) <Jess> likewise. ;)
<Deffi> what a jerk! :\ But as for your reaction: excellent. Anger is an energizer - this is a survivor's reaction to sudden danger. |

| Sep-12-10 | | dakgootje: <Anger is an energizer - this is a survivor's reaction to sudden danger.> Very true! If you ever go to a National Park in Kenya and see an angry rhino charging at you, you should look even more furious back. You will just see it hesitate and think "Hold on! That irritating thing with the camera, Hawaii-shirt and flip-flops is a tourist. If I kill a tourist you will just see the media gets luft* of it, then there is a fair chance it will have a negative impact on the local tourism branch and therefore the economical situation of this Park. I'd better slow down and let it take a nice picture of my best side." *Yes, Kenyan Rhino's learn a basic vocabulary of German. It helps because none understands them in Swahili. |

| Sep-12-10 | | crawfb5: Game Collection: Cleveland 1871 is done or nearly so. I think the well has run just about dry on any additional information, but of course I'd add something if it was good enough... |

| Sep-13-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: <Big>
With all due respect to the Big Three, and many others skilled at the art of constructing games collections (Wannabe2000, Amadeus, Whiteshark, KingG, Keypusher, Karpova, and many others), I think your new collection sets a new standard.The depth of your research is stunning and made readily available at the stroke of a key. You even have one of the article links go directly to the relevant <chesscafe> paragraph. How do you do that? Mainly, what sets this collection apart is the inclusion of relevant, and very fine, articles by talented chess historians, especially <Jeremy P. Spinrad>. His treatment of the "Ware Affair" is gripping.
How can one resist this kind of writing?
<"Ware was capable of some spectacularly bad play, even when he was not paid to do so..."> Also, the collection serves admirably to publicize <George McKenzie>, arguably the best "unknown" American chess master in history. Given how colorful his life story was, and how spectacular his tournament results were, it's difficult to figure out why he labors in relative chess obscurity. I hope your collection serves to remedy this lamentable state of affairs. This collection is a valuable historical document- not just a valuable chess document. Congratulations are in order. |

| Sep-13-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: And I'd be lying if I didn't admit I was thinking this the entire time I spent exploring the collection: <Cleveland 1871> would make a fabulous subject for a chess documentary video. |

| Sep-13-10 | | brankat: Jess,
I'm glad to hear AAA's wives are still alive and well. This just occurred to me now: can't but wonder whether Henry VIII was a chess player, too :-) I'll see if I can dig up some "new" material for both, Mrs.A and Russian GMs sites. |
|
| Sep-13-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: Thanks <Branko>!
I should think it likely that Henry VIII played chess. In those days I think a ruler would be considered "weak" if he/she couldn't put together a few decent chess games. |

| Sep-13-10 | | crawfb5: <And I'd be lying if I didn't admit I was thinking this the entire time I spent exploring the collection: <Cleveland 1871> would make a fabulous subject for a chess documentary video.> Thanks. Well, maybe the 5th Congress in New York 1880 (Game Collection: New York 1880) might make the better video because that's where the Ware business flared up. Yes, I knew you've been playing with new software, so I wasn't worried about a temporary halt on production of Poppin or any of your other fine films. |
|
| Sep-13-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: Yes I thought of that as well- possibly the video could focus on <Preston> himself and span the tournaments detailed by <Jeremy Spinnaker>. Possible title ideas? I wouldn't be able to start on such a project till January so we have lots of time. <HARD WARE MALFUNCTION: 19th Century Chess Bribes> Further candidate titles welcome. |

NN-Crawfb5 BLACK TO MOVE:
 click for larger viewWhite earlier gave up a Knight for two pawns. I don't know if he miscalculated something or thought he could roll me up with the extra pawns, but I was able to trade down to the resulting B+Ps vs more Ps position. There are two possible dangers here: 1) very aimless play might still allow him to roll me up with the pawns and 2) I have to be a bit careful about getting stuck in a blockade or other situation where I cannot make progress because of his extra pawns. After some deliberation, I hit upon a plan.
<42...h5>
I lock the most distant pawn on a dark square, so his King cannot stray far or else I pick it up with the Bishop. Even if he could eventually win my h5 pawn after 43. gxh5 gxh5, as long as I liquidate his central pawns I can go after the b5 pawn with my King and let my Bishop handle the h-pawn. <43. g5+ Ke6 44. Kf3 Bb4> Threatens 45...Be8. Once I tie his King to defense of the h4 pawn, I can force him to weaken his pawns and/or run for the b5 pawn. With the Bishop I can step outside a pawn's queening square if need be. <45. Ke2 Bc3>
Now he has to advance the pawn.
<46. d5+ Kd6>
Here White played <47. Kd3> which allowed <47...Be8> and the loss of the h5 pawn, but he's dead in any event. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Russian Grandmasters: I should think it likely that Henry VIII played chess. In those days I think a ruler would be considered "weak" if he/she couldn't put together a few decent chess games.> I doubt he did well at chess. Too many unnecessary queen sacrifices. |
|
| Sep-14-10 | | crawfb5: Why did Henry sacrifice Queens?
Because he could. |
|
| Sep-14-10 | | Nietzowitsch: For him rather a trade-off. |
|
| Sep-14-10 | | crawfb5: Sacrifice one only when he was prepared to promote another? |
|
| Sep-14-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: <you two scalliwags> heh that's pretty funny- laughed a fair bit about that. <Phony Benoni> I just spent the last five hours tracking down a chess history point that wouldn't let me go to sleep- it pertains to a post you made on this game: Najdorf vs S Szapiro, 1948 I'd be very interested to know if you had any further thoughts on this issue. |

| Sep-15-10 | | cormier: Love never fails.
If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing;
if tongues, they will cease;
if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing.
For we know partially and we prophesy partially,
but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.
When I was a child, I used to talk as a child,
think as a child, reason as a child;
when I became a man, I put aside childish things.
At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror,
but then face to face.
At present I know partially;
then I shall know fully, as I am fully known.
So faith, hope, love remain, these three;
but the greatest of these is love. |
