| Jan-10-11 | | achieve: small correction re VLC player main menu bar (I changed my operating language from Dutch to English to "synchronize" the terminology)- you get to effects/filters of course from the "Tools" option on the main menu bar: --> "Tools" --> "Effects and filters" --> adjust image --> gamma PS - I posted some extra info at the Euwe center.
PPS - Richard pronounces "Euwe" perfectly in the videos, very well done! |

| Jan-10-11 | | twinlark: Your emu landed and there's one returned on the fly. On the subject of pronunciation, as a Hungarian plains barbarian clop-clopping across the countryside, I've always pronounced Maroczy as <Mo-ror-tsi>, first phoneme short as in <hot>, second long as in <or> with the second syllable emphasised by default because of its length. Annie might confirm or refute that. |

| Jan-12-11 | | TheFocus: From my Forum:
<jessicafischerqueen>< One last thing- I was looking to see if there's a collection of Bobby's rematch with Spassky, but I couldn't find it.Are you planning to make one?
I want to include that, makes sense following your <Gligoric training> games. I'll wait for further instructions.
Wonderful work on your part- thanks on behalf of me and all Bobby's fans.> Yes, I am working every day. Have three matches and 8 tournaments left. May get them all done today and tomorrow. |
|
| Jan-12-11 | | TheFocus: From My Forum:
<jessicafischerqueen>< Ah sorry this is actually the last thing-Is the man here with Bobby <Carmine Nigro>?> http://www.echecs-photos.be/BobbyFi...
<I was looking for photos of Carmine online but with no luck.> I am not sure. I will send these to Carmine Nigro's son and ask him. There will be a chapter about Carmine in my book. I will e-mail him today and let you know. He may even know what tournament this was.
When Carmine left Brooklyn in 1956, he became a golf pro (teacher and trainer). A most interesting man, Bobby's only teacher, and a great influence on Bobby's early years. Bobby, as you know, dedicated his first book to Carmine Nigro. In my opinion, Bobby was outgrowing his teacher by 1956 and there would not have been much more Carmine could have done for Bobby. |

| Jan-12-11 | | TheFocus: <jess> Congratulations on the videos! My respect for you knows no bounds. I have not yet been able to view them but will stay after work today and watch them. |

| Jan-12-11 | | Benzol: Hi Jess just read your post on my forum. Like Dave (Phony Benoni) I have no control over any forum other than my own. I can edit biographical data on player pages but that's about it. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. |

Yes, you're mostly right. The "cz" letters are archaic writing for the single phoneme that is written in modern Hungarian as "c" and in English usually expressed as "tz" or "ts". I'd write it as MA-ROW-tsi, with emphasis both on the first and second syllables. The first syllable because in HUNgarian the EMphasis is ALways on the first SYLlable, ;) and the second syllable because of the vowel length. |
|
| Jan-13-11 | | TheFocus: <jess> the <Queen of Chess>! I just spent the last hour watching your Polish videos. Great history, great pictures, great narration, great music!!!! I take my hat off to you! Keep up the wonderful work! |
|
| Jan-13-11 | | TheFocus: In regard to the picture that you asked me about, Carmine Nigro's son Bill e-mailed me that this is not Carmine Nigro and the boy in the pictures is not Bobby Fischer. I have a few pictures of Bobby from 1956 and the boy in these pictures does not really resemble Bobby at all. Here, from Edward Winter's Chess Notes are two pictures of Bobby Fischer from 1953, his earliest known pictures. The source is David DeLucia's <Bobby Fischer Uncensored>. http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/... |
|
| Jan-13-11 | | TheFocus: Oops, in the above post, the pictures are in #6193.
Compare them and known pictures of Bobby from 1956 and it is clear that the pictures at that photo archive are not of Bobby. The boy in the picture is also younger than 11 or 12, probably 9. I don't know the source of those pictures in the archive but it is not Bobby. |
|
| Jan-13-11 | | WBP: <Jess> Thanks for getting me back in this. (Left you a note in my house.) Hope to hang on longer than before. I'll certainly be watching some of the <Tater Tots Tourny> that starts tomorrow. And I love all the chess stuff you're doing! |
