Jan-15-11  achieve: <Jess> Sorry to hear about your profile mayhem; my advice is to just let it rest and not waste your entire evening and night on this, since Daniel or a colleague of his know how much of a bummer this is for you, and will retrieve the text plus links with a few simple keystrokes within seconds. They're bound to be up and about very soon as no doubt they want to check if the LIVE relay gamepage is working orderly. My few cents.

jessicafischerqueen: <Ohio> thanks for the recommendation- I just saw that this morning.

I think I'll stick with the one <McLovin> contest- it's hard enough for me to do one of these things.

Why is there no "Monkey Ranker" on the moves prediction contest?

Statistically, the "Monkey Ranker" is one of the most popular CG.com members in the history of the website.

It's a fact!

Jan-16-11  achieve: <Jess> First, I'll help you out with the names of course, as you know, but on the condition that from now on you'll spell <Wijk aan Zee> correctly, no more Ann, that's more like "cousin <Ann> from Wisconsin", right? No capital A, but just 'aan'

And second, please make an as "complete" as possible list of names you want spelling/phonetics on for a future project, so that I van put them all in one or two posts, and you can save them to a folder or doc you might want to keep on specifically on pronunciation plus spelling of names.

I'd like us to be efficient here and not spread it around too much where it gets "lost at sea."

Just let me know when you need some phonetics pronto, and I'll help out then also, of course.

thirdly, I <do> think it's a good idea to edit your profile, clean it up and redistribute and stuff... Way to go!

Jan-16-11  achieve: Oh, and I'll be online only for a brief spell here and there today; House Cleaning - is topping the agenda.

thanks--h..

Jan-16-11  achieve: One more thing, I <like> your profile as it is now, very neat and "current," and ideally there should be an "open up to FULL profile"-feature. Ideally you should get severely on Daniel's case in casu. heh

But really, a similar feature we already have at CG with the number of games a "page shows," which is exactly what you might want with the profile: show all/show top

a button in the corner of the profile area

thanks--

Jan-17-11  notyetagm: <jessicafischerqueen: <Daniel> thanks for reinstalling my Profile! It will be very easy for me to edit it down now. Thank you thank you thank you>

<he Final Push

A good result in the Atlantic Open in DC put me within touching distance of my goal, but there was a missing ingredient: Improved play in g/30 events. Enter semi-retired International Master Alan Stein. As a strong chessplayer interested in pedagogy, Alan generously offered to spend time analyzing positions with me and assisting my improvement process. Looking at tactical situations with him has been a highly instructive experience. It has nudged me away from "this has to win" obsessiveness toward broader thinking in the search for ideas. Our work has made me keenly aware of my tendency to spend my thinking time OTB hitting the same nail with the same hammer, trying to force the first line I looked at to work. Watching how he approaches these positions has improved my ability to order candidate moves (for that matter, LIST candidate moves), allocate time, and generally think more practically. <<<This was well complemented by an unorthodox suggestion of his: That I memorize the solution to every single problem in Ray Cheng's Practical Chess Exercises (nobody said improving was always fun!) and develop the facility to repeat them in 1-2 seconds per problem.>>> Immediately after doing this, I played a fast game that bore out Alan's prediction: I ‘saw more' at the board. >

Jan-17-11  notyetagm: http://www.chesscafe.com/text/heism...

<THE SAFETY TABLE: HEISMAN>

<There are many ways safety can be affected by a move:

● The moving piece’s safety on the square where it lands.

● A capture made by the moving piece.

● Any new squares attacked and/or guarded by the moving piece.

● Any squares no longer attacked and/or guarded by the moving piece.

● Any discoveries (for both sides!) made by the moving piece – this would include any squares cleared for movement. For example, 1. Nf3 clears g1 for the possibility of 2.Rg1, but at this point the safety of other pieces is not yet affected since no black pieces are attacking the white first rank.

● Any squares blocked (for both sides) by the moving piece – this would be the opposite effect of a discovery.

● The allowance or prevention of castling or en passant.

● Indirectly: squares that the moving piece can affect next move (or in future moves) that have to be attended to this move, e.g., the threat to make an unstoppable threat next move.>

Jan-17-11  TheFocus: From my Forum:

<Hello- first, congratulations!

Second, my Profile exploded yesterday so I'm going to re-edit all of it.

I have an idea of how to incorporate all your games collections in the Profile.

It strikes me that some people might want to see "Bobby's games only" tournament collections, and others might want "All rounds" collections.

Thanks to the hard work of you and <suenteus po> and others, it's possible to mount all of these together so people have the option.

At any rate, this will take a little time.>

<Also, on the "missing histories"- just what I'd like to see as a Bobby fan, the more rare and interesting information you can pack into those, the better.>

I am going to add brief histories for some. You know, I do have to keep the tasty rare stuff for the book.

<You have the advantage of a huge chess library- the unique opportunity to include some deep background on all of the events you've just finished collecting.

I look forward to the final results, believe me.>

On another note, today I received two excellent photos of Carmine Nigro. One is him in his Army uniform. Such a handsome man, I can tell you. The second is of him teaching chess to his grandson. Carmine's son gave them to me for the book, so sadly, I can't share them. He has said he will get me some more photos. Unfortunately, he doesn't have any of Carmine with with Bobby. That would be a great addition.

Anyone who can find a photo of Carmine and Bobby together receives a free copy of the book!!

<After the first round of the 2011 Tata Steel Chess Tournament, David Navara entered the press room and gave a spontaneous ‘press conference’ about his game against Radowslaw Wojtaszek. The Czech GM was happy about his game, and rightly so – it won him the daily public prize in the B group. <<<Take your time and enjoy this 40-minute masterclass of rook endings.>>>>
