 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Tim> I've read all of Plato and I'm not impressed by much other than his sense of humor and his clever logical constructions, most of which are fallacious, and thus of interest solely in a historical sense. Much more pertinent work is being done today by actual scientists into the phenomenon of "faith" as such. As you probably already know, an area of the brain has already been identified that, when stimulated, will engender feelings of "not being alone in the universe." Seems to me that would have a clear evolutionary advantage- tough to get up in the morning and get that next mammoth if you feel all alone in the universe. Also, I bet the capacity of humans to feel faith helps them bond together in cooperative groups, which is helpful. Less helpful, arguably, is when each group tries to exterminate the other group with the "wrong faith." Compassion has an equally obvious evolutionary advantage among social mammals. Not crows, Tim. Dogs, chimps, baboons, and such. |
Apr-12-12
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Tim> that's an extremely well-written article from the Stanford Encyclopedia. Those folks are certainly on the ball eh? Thorough. |
Apr-12-12
 | | jessicafischerqueen: However, my sister is absolutely convinced that our father has been reincarnated into a Crow. Needless to say, I feel no urge of any kind to contradict her on this matter. I think people should be given as much room as they want with regard to their faith. |
| Apr-13-12 | | Boomie: <Jessie>
They found a crow in New Caledonia that fashions a tool with a hook to snare grubs. Not even chimpanzees have discovered the hook in their toolmaking. Crow's are creepy smart. I never let one sneak up behind me. Especially ones that are reincarnated spirits. |
| Apr-13-12 | | Boomie: <Jessiroo, Doctor of Anthropology: Compassion has an equally obvious evolutionary advantage> Not to me. How can sharing food with the hungry promote the perpetuation of ones genes? Quite the opposite, I'd say. Unless the acts of altruism are reciprocated by other, the grim maths show more food = more munchkins to carry on the family tradition. There must be a complicated set of factors that preserves the compassion gene. |
Apr-13-12
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Tampa> well it is complicated, you're right. I must have been wrong there. But I think humans and maybe Chimps also have social adaptations that aren't tied directly to evolution. Social adaptations such as altruism and a sense of "justice" or "ethics" can arise quickly in the behavioral conventions that arise in social groups, in comparison to the millions of years necessary for biological evolution. Also, what if there's a chick who gets turned on by altruism? In this case, if some unsuspecting schmuck shows altruism in front of her, he may be surprised to find himself in the sack and then passing on his jeans, after first taking them off. |
| Apr-13-12 | | Boomie: <Jessie Joe>
Perhaps altruism is a babe magnet. One wonders how such attraction squares with raising chitlins. Maybe getting by on less leads to more intelligence. Ya gotta be clever to split that marmot 4 ways. |
Apr-13-12
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Well <Howard> gets a lot of chicks and I happen to know he's something of a marmot conaisseur as well. Maybe we should ask him, or his wife Arriba! Recall that her name is actually spelled <Arriba!> so if you want to add an exclamation point to it, there'd have to be two: <Arriba!!> |
| Apr-13-12 | | Boomie: Those statistics guys have all the luck 'cause they know their way around the curves. Just the mention of Gaussian distribution can send one into a swoon. Arruba!! |
| Apr-13-12 | | hms123: Arriba! has a wonderful recipe for <marmot fricassee>. I have found that the new addition to the <Matted Elk> line, <Matted Elk April Shiraz> goes quite well with the dish. |
| Apr-13-12 | | hms123: The compassion gene comes into play when your childless uncle or your aunt with 6 kids takes you in out of necessity. They share genes too. They also shared jeans, which why those 6 kids are all cross-eyed. |

| Apr-13-12 | | Memethecat: Interesting topic. My tuppence worth: Altruism is great, but its the playground of those who have plenty, or even just enough. It might be a fairly new phenomenon that started to appear after we converted to an agrarian society, with stockpiles of grain & herds of whatever. I've thankfully got no experience of famine or real hunger, but I'm sure, under those conditions, the luxury's of charity, kindness & altruism would be gone in a snap & be replaced by our original animalism. A few 1st hand accounts by Japanese POWs & concentration camp inmates shows this to be so. The worlds most sincere philanthropist would be feral in a fortnight IMVVVHO. Survival rocks, everything else is window dressing.
As for getting into someone's knickers, absolutely, as long as its real, women have got good antennae, men not so much. |

<As quoted in his obituary by Maynard Smith in Nature 206 (1965), p. 239No, but I would to save two brothers or eight cousins.
Reply when asked if he would give his life to save a drowning brother, as quoted in Mathematical Models of Social Evolution : A Guide for the Perplexed (2007) by Richard McElreath and Robert Boyd, p. 82; as you share on average half your alleles with a brother and one-eighth with a cousin, Haldane was giving the number of relatives one would have to save to "break even".> JBS Haldane |

| Apr-13-12 | | playground player: <jessicafischerqueen> I didn't get where I am today by knowing every little this-and-that about Vancouver. I also didn't get where I am today by collecting marmot recipes (although I am familiar with the traditional recipe for whole mice on a stick). |
| Apr-13-12 | | Memethecat: <hms> How many half cousins does it take to make a whole you? Marmot quartered & mice on a stick are undoubtedly delicacies of the new world, while we have to make do with hedgehogs baked in clay & wild kitten. Swans are the preserve of royal tea. |
| Apr-13-12 | | Boomie: <hms123: Arriba! has a wonderful recipe for <marmot fricassee>.> Happy to see our panel of experts focussing on the important issues. Clearly marmot recipes is squarely at the crux of the matter. I don't know what a crux is but I'm sure it describes our predicament. Perhaps ARRRRIBBAA!! can patent her recipe and sell it to the latest fast food chain, Tennessee Fried Marmot. There are no adjectives adequate to describe a Southern deep fried marmot in a blanket with a side of chitlins and a corn jimmy. Add a generous helping of Uncle Ben's Converted Rice (they used to be Presbyterians) and a tall glass of Chattanooga sedge water and you're well on your way. |

<How many half cousins does it take to make a whole you?> Quite a few. We have a lot of unhappy experience with chainsaws in these parts, so <Doc> gets a lot of practice. Some animals are harmed in the course of the surgery. |
| Apr-13-12 | | Boomie: <How many half cousins> Multiply the parents times the siblings plus twice removed, carry the aunt, and the answer is clearly Bangers and Mash. |
