| Dec-10-12 | | crawfb5: <Ms. Diogenes> What is this "innocent" of which you speak? |
|
| Dec-10-12 | | USSR Championships: <Big> well it's srz bznss to get <Travis Forum> reopened. This website is full of many, many VERY OBJECTIONABLE PEOPLE (including me) so we can't let them bug our friends. If we can't actually find a hundred innocent people, we may have to ask for "mostly innocent" volunteers. |
|
| Dec-10-12 | | TheFocus: <Travis> You and me don't like each other, but I think you should keep your Forum open. You post good music and that is what counts. |
|
| Dec-10-12 | | Thanh Phan: <Travis Bickle> Sorry to hear about the troubles you had to deal with on this site. I hope you could still share the songs you like, if not on your page then here, mine and others pages, best of luck to you whatever path you choose <jessicafischerqueen> I have found a page with some history on the Russian calendar and Holidays http://www.sras.org/russian_holidays An interesting part I found;
Old New Year / Старый Новый Год
January 13, 2013 (not a federal holiday; falls on a Sunday in 2013)
In one of history's quirkier notes, the Soviets changed the Russian calendar four times. |

I'm sure <Travis> will be fine and I love him no matter what he decides to do. He is a major asset to this site, not just his forum, but also his many sports and chess posts on a wide variety of pages. His humor and energy make him a top tier member. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <jessicafischerqueen> I feel like I should apologize to you as well for coming across so harshly yesterday. You know that's not my usual style. First, I'll plead illness. I picked up a nasty bug just before Thanksgiving, and still haven't shaken the thing. But more importantly, I've been putting too much pressure on myself by being obsessed with cleaning up the Historical Tournament pages, including updating round/date information where needed. Then all those 200-game USSR Championships started rolling in, all with updates needed for every game... Yes, I cracked.
The fact is, I don't expect updating the country codes is going to be such a big deal once the decision is finally made about what to do. I will be glad when we get it out of the way. The only thing I would ask of you--and any other tournament submitter--is to be careful. What someone should do--OK, it'll probably be me--is keep track of any changes that need to made to the historical tournaments so they can be corrected at a later date. Probably not before the end of the year, though. It's hard to get anything done around here during the Christmas Prize Hunt. |

 | | Annie K.: <Jess> & <PB> (and any relevant lurkers) ;) - now you know why <cg> take their time doing things, and won't be rushed. :) They work, and they work hard at that... but there are megatons of work to do around here, and if you can't let go of this sense of urgency, all you'll do is burn yourself out. Slow down, take it a little easier. Rome wasn't built in a day, although admittedly that was Before the Internet, but there's still a point in there somewhere. ;) Have fun! |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Phony Benoni> It's most kind of you to post here, and I appreciate it very much, but you've no need to explain yourself to me about any of your actions. Also, I'm sorry you are ill. I hope you recover soon! I have nothing but warm feelings towards you. For years you have often, and always patiently, helped me, especially lately now that I'm learning how to be a helper-editor. Believe me, I still feel terrible about this USSR Championships cockup. For some reason I was thinking (GBR) vs. (ENG) was equivalent to (URS) vs. (RUS), when it fact of course they are quite distinct cases. Russian Empire, then Soviet Empire and so on, different languages and such. Also, it was careless of me not to have investigated back pages of the <Bistro> on this issue. If I'd done so I could have answered my own question to you. <Annie> is right! As usual. Thanks Annie! |

I have had them, though I'm not a big fan. The Hostess cherry pies, yellow zingers, powdered doughnuts, and cinnamon rolls rock though. |
|
Dec-11-12
 | | jessicafischerqueen: What about all those "scientific" studies that indicate Hostess Products, uneaten, would last up to 5 billion years in a state of nature? |
|
| Dec-12-12 | | Boomie: I believe after about a billion years, Twinkies evolve into cockroaches. |
|
Dec-12-12
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Tim> well I've never believed in those outlandish claims about cockroaches, that they'll inherit the earth and be the last men standing and such. An ant can take a cockroach any day, I've seen the evidence on youtube. |
|

click for larger viewQ. White to move. How does Caruana playing White first capture on c4, with the d2-knight or with the c1-rook? A. With the rook, of course! <RELOADING>! 23 ♖c1x♗c4! <reload: c4>
 click for larger view23 ... ♘a5x♖c4 24 ♘d2x♘c4 <♖ for ♗♘>

click for larger viewAnd now we see the point of Caruana's excellent <RELOADING> idea: by ending up with a knight on c4 instead of a rook, White defends the a3-bishop from the Black a8-queen, winning two pieces for a rook. That is, if White had played the "obvious" capturing sequence on c4 by first taking with the d2-knight and only then with the c1-rook , the sequence of captures would have been 23 ♘d2x♗c4?! ♘a5x♘c4 24 ♖c1x♘c4 ♕a8x♗a3 and Black does *not* lose material in this variation because of the Black queen's capture on the final move.
