jessicafischerqueen: <Doggimus> Yes the "Petrov Memorial" exists thanks to <Alexei Shirov's> organization, and the tournament you cited above is held in <Jurmala, Riga> not in <Moscow>. http://chess-results.com/tnr77638.a...

Interestingly, <Shirov> had originally been wanting to run a "Tal Memorial" in Jurmala, but <Jeanne Tal> forbade use of the name in 2011.

As <Shirov> tells it, <"Jeanne Tal, as the chairman of the fund named Tal, did not agree with some organizational issues. What surprised me the most, she forbade me to use the name of Mikhail <<<Tal>>>, because she said that the name belongs to ... that is, the name it has a patent pool.">

But <Shirov> had already confirmed the lineup and organized the event, so he decided to inaugurate the <Petrov Memorial> instead. He approached Petrov's grandson <Vladimir Dedkov>, and the event was born.

<Shirov>: <"I took advantage of the fact that I have a very good relationship with Vladimir Dedkova - grandson of Vladimir Petrov. I thought it was time we do an event, one way or another connected with the history of the <<<Latvian chess>>>, and even in Jurmala, where, as you know, the grandmaster Vladimir Petrov has achieved the greatest success in his short career, .. Thus, the tournament was the Memorial of Vladimir Petrov.">

The <greatest success in his short career>, of course, was Kemeri (1937).

<Kemeri> is the name of the hotel/resort in Jurmala, a suburb of Riga on the seashore.

You can read the whole <Shirov> interview here, along with kibbutzing from <Vladimir Dedkov> and also from the great contemporary Russian chess historian <Sergei Voronkov>: http://chess-news.ru/node/5341

Jan-15-13  Abdel Irada: <jessicafischerqueen>: Apropos of the recent contretemps between <Travis Bickle> and <Colonel Mortimer>, I'm not sure if you've seen the conversation on the <Kenneth Rogoff> pages, but in all fairness, <CM>'s posts (although the battle should not have been imported to your forum) were a reaction to a fair amount of provocation.

Of course, I'm sure you have your own opinions about the respective combatants, and you have doubtless had far more opportunity than I to get to know both of them, but I think there are two sides to this story.

jessicafischerqueen: <Doggimus> thanks for prompting me to research these lads. It was difficult to get ahold of the books, I felt a bit like one of those "lost book hunters" in films such as <The DaVinci code>, <The 9th Gate>, or <The Revenge of Abe Lincoln>.

jessicafischerqueen: <Abdel> thanks for posting, and welcome to my house. I appreciate your position, but the "History of Mortimer" goes back a long, long way and it's not just to do with him and <Travis> fighting. You should ask <Switching Owls for Thugs> about this history, he knows all of it and he's usually willing to tell a story on deep background, if asked.

I know <Travis> and <Mortimer> fight on other pages. What I took issue with was <Mortimer> dragging the fight first to the <Caissar> page, and then to <Travis'> personal chess forum.

That's not cool. One of the reasons we have the <Beef Stroganov> and <Argue> pages is so that we don't need to argue on historical game pages, personal fora, and important special event pages such as the <Caissars>.

In particular, my forum cannot be used for arguing. It's where I come to relax with my friends.

You are very welcome here.

At any rate, good luck to you in getting a Caissar in today's category.

(I enjoyed your post about the bees, that had me chuckling for more than a few minutes).

jessicafischerqueen: <Hanh> thanks for yet another marvelous German link with even more German links!

I was particularly happy to see the link for <KARL> there, I just re-bookmarked it. That can be a very handy site for tracking down rare bibliographical information. I found a really obscure article by <Genna Sosonko> which I needed, based on information I got from <KARL>.

Stan is the most wicked person on the internet.

Jan-15-13  Abdel Irada: Hmm. I've posted on the <Argue> page, but this is the first I've heard of a <Beef Stroganov> forum. I'll have to investigate that. :-)

Apologies if you really like this act, but Yikes! remains my only honest response.

Well and also their name is somewhat unfortunate, Shirley?

I'm glad I missed this decade. I think there's probably an excellent reason these lads have been forgotten?

jessicafischerqueen: You may be wondering who "Lotsapoppa" is.

He's a real guy, still living somewhere in L.A.

One of Charlie Manson's friends ripped off Lotsapoppa in a drug deal. Lotsapoppa was black, so Charlie thought he might belong to the <Black Panthers> and they might come to the ranch and wipe everyone out.

So he tried to kill Lotsapoppa. He shot him, and Lotsapoppa pretended to be dead.

Later, state prosecutor Vince Bugliosi tried to get Lotsapoppa to get an operation so he could use the bullet as evidence at Charlie's trial.

Lotsapoppa said "No way" but he did give testimony.

After he testified, Charlie passed him in the hall, and said "No hard feelings man."

Anyways mainly I just thought it was an excellent nickname.

I don't mind. :-)

jessicafischerqueen: I'm glad to hear that. As you may remember, I showed you the link before to "Canyonero," which is a fictional brand of Range Rover from <The Simpsons>.

You may also remember krmr gave you the "caucho."

jessicafischerqueen: <H> Good heavens I'm dense. Thanks very much, but as I was explaining to the Major over at the Caissar page, it's other people who did all the work to dig up those links. Mainly I just sat here and collected them as they came in. I did do the legwork to compile the video annotated games, most by <kingscrusher>.

Nowadays we can find all of <kingscrusher's> videos on Bobby Fischer here in one link, almost 100 games: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

jessicafischerqueen: <H> I'm very relieved about the "musical act." I think it's very important that we both hate the same people.

It's the best foundation for a strong friendship, unless TV and the backs of cereal boxes have lied to me.
