| Apr-11-11 | | madlydeeply: Say ma'am you should check out Silman's biography of Pal Benko. You can tell the author cared deeply for his subject. Included is a lovely anecdote whereupon young whippersnapper Pal got in a bout of fisticuffs with a fellah on the beach, over the attentions of some saucy young tart. Benko held that poor fellah's head under the water until he yielded. Turned out he was a boxing champion HA! Oh also he was thrown into a Hungarian prison, left to rot, luckily Stalin died, etc... long book lots and lots of photos. I must say i loved it so much i almost bought it. Later! |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: My dear <MadMagazine> I have read the <Benko> biography in question- in fact, it's sitting on the floor right next to my bed with around fifty other chess books. <Pal> also got into a fistfight with Bobby Fischer- jumped right on top of him in Bobby's hotel room. |
|
| Apr-11-11 | | TheFocus: Bill Nigro supplied me with three nice Carmine photos. 1. Military photo in uniform (portrait style).
2. Entertaining aboard a ship - looks like top hat and tails. 3. A photo at the board.
Bill became a chess teacher like his Dad, and often times Carmine would come in and conduct a lesson too. I am looking forward to meeting Bill for an interview. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <The Focus> fantastic! Be sure to keep close guard on those new Carmine photos when you get them- I think you want their first appearance to be in your book. 10 seconds after your book is published, of course, all the photos will immediately appear on the internet- but it's nice to be "officially first". Also, there are still gentlemen in the chess history world such as <Edward Winter>, who actually asks people if he can post their photos, and then gives credit and provenance. Steinitz biographer <Kurt Landsberger> too. A lot of Steinitz photos are in the public domain, and no one is sure where they originally came from- but where possible/applicable, <Landsberger> gives the provenance of the photos he uses in his book, and even lists the owners of the original photos, when he knows that information. |
|
| Apr-11-11 | | TheFocus: I remember though when <Edward Winter> had a photo gallery on ChessCafe. Each one had a yellow streak across them so he could tell if anyone tried to use his pictures without his permission. And he came down hard on them when they did. If you asked him if you could use the photo, he was more than happy to remove the yellow streak for you. Like I have said before, I find <Winter> to be a fair man. |

| Apr-12-11 | | LIFE Master AJ: I have redone dozens of web pages the past few days. Fischer vs Geller, 1967
The link on the page carries you to two pages that have been completely "re-fitted" and corrected. The TEXT page has a NEW analysis ... but it is BELOW the original analysis! The bottom line? I could find NO forced win for White after Fischer's 20.Qf4!! (I used Fritz 12, Rybka 3, Houdini and many other engines.) So - at least this one time - Fischer's assessment of this game was incorrect. If you have time, take a look and tell me what you think. |
