Apr-04-13  Travis Bickle: <I don't understand the John Lennon one. Why would Stones and other bands be angry the Beatles broke up?> Jess other bands weren't unhappy The Beatles broke up, but they were, especially Mick Jagger making digs about them.
Apr-05-13  Travis Bickle: The Beatles did enjoy making their last hoorah album & masterpiece Abbey Road. Ringo also said at the end of Anthology that he thought The Beatles could have made a few more albums.

jessicafischerqueen: <Ohio> Good heavens I don't recognize even half those names in the last "blue streak."

However, I respect the "blue process" too much to sully it by Googling.

Many, including the bone idle and people who talk loudly in restaurants, regard Googling to be "jejune."

<Doggimus> told me that word and I still don't know what it means.

Why? I refuse to google it and there are no English dictionaries in this country.

Apr-05-13  achieve: <Jess> Do you still do your <Batchimeg at the Movies> bits from time to time?

I might need one... heh

Meaning that I watched, with quite some "expectation,", the new Tarantino film <Django Unchained>, and while there were classic Tarantino moments and some great acting, I couldn't help but turn away from the glorified gory bits with the bullet impacts and spraying of blood, and at the end I was just horrified at the excessive depiction, not only of violence - after all this is a nod to the old spaghetti westerns - but looking at his oevre sofar I could not remember a film where this excess of depiction of violence and complete lack of empathy with loss of life, bordering to sadism at times, even a hint to snuff movie "entertainment", but looking back at Kill Bill, Desperado, Inglourious Basterds, he just keeps telling the same type stories in various ways, uses the same rather lame overextended "humorous scenes" and dialogue in them, often of the degrading kind, and in all of his films the bullet and sword impacts are filmed as graphically and exaggerated as possible. Even though I am a sucker for a good revenge narrative, the places that Tarantino takes it have become extremely predictable, and rival eachother at how gory and oftentimes sadistic they can be.

I became aware of such a pattern after Inglourious, but it is like every freaking film he makes these horrific scenes are fed to a mainstream audience with lyrical critical reviews, and personally I think it sucks.

What's "your take"?!

"Roll camera... Aaand, take!"

jessicafischerqueen: <Niels> I'm afraid "Batchimeg at the Movies" has retired out of respect for the moving on of "McLovin" (chessmoron).

He used to do the movie reviews and I shamelessly copied his exact format... heh...

But there *is* "Jess at the Movies" which I will inaugurate now in your honor.

Let me start with Jinx!

I waited for the very good copies of <Django Unhinged> to be available on download and then got a ridiculously huge file so that I could enjoy it in better resolution than in real life even.

Niels I watched maybe 30 minutes of it and then deleted the file in disgust.

I agree with every word of your review. In addition, I thought <Which one of you Bastards called this Bastard a Bastard?> was a poor outing for Tarrentino, who I respected very much for <True Romance (Christian Slater!)>, which he wrote, and his trio of masterpieces <Jackie Brown>, <Pulp Fiction>, and <Resevoir Dogs (Tim Roth)!>

I'd like to finish "my" review by just inserting your review as the beginning.

Then I'd close by saying that not only was the film morally objectionable on every level, on an aesthetic level the film was simply poor. It looked like the actors were simply walking through their parts with a smirk on their face. That doesn't do it for me. A criminal waste of talent, Jaime Foxx and DiCaprio in particular.

Last word- I am mystified by the popular and, by and large, critical success of this mediocre and pointless thing.

I refuse to call it a film.

On a sunnier note, it's been great to talk with you again. Your posts are better than <Django Unhinged> in their morality, accuracy, and aesthetic value.

To all readers, I recommend giving "Tarrentino's Folly" a pass. You'd find it much more profitable to read the last 300 posts of <achieve>.

Heh...

Look at your last sentence:

<"Roll camera... Aaand, take!">

Is this a subliminal prediction that <Anand> will retain his title?

Niels I have not been more thrilled by the prospect of a title match in my life. I only got the thrill of <Fischer-Spassky> through my father's experience of that, which is what started me in chess- chess and chess stories with my Dad on so many evenings.

I don't know who to cheer for, I love <Anand> and <Carlsen> so much.

I guess I hope <Carlsen> wins and becomes one of our greatest champions.

On the other hand, I'd be equally happy to see <Anand> rise to the challenge.

At any rate, as <notyetagm> said, "I'm cheering for good chess."

I expect we'll see a lot of that in the upcoming historical SHOWDOWN OF THE STARS WORLD TITLE CHESS MATCH.

Apr-05-13  achieve: <Jess> My mind travels back to my dad's first "love"-affairs with chess, and his competitive spirit was enough to draw me in whenever he would hit his femur/knee in disgust, rooting for some or the other. My first rubs were in essence mostly the first 1984 K-K matchup/games. My dad used to play his neighbour and when he lost he was absolute death to be around. I think we'll get one heck of a 2013 fight, and Anand has a substantial chance, but predicting the outcome between forces of nature this different in character, seems nigh impossible. I'd put a few chessbucks on Carlsen, though.

I really love your response to my cinematic question, as it indeed carries over to the realms of morality and aesthitics and much more really, and equally I appreciate the time you took to formulate a cogent response, since I really needed it, and very few people share our position on Tarantino.

More importantly we have re-established some fertile ground to share our feelings and thoughts, and after all we share the deep interest and love for the royal game, although mine probably a little less deeply rooted than yours.

<Thomas Vinterberg>'s recent 'Jagten' (The hunt)?

I was looking forward to this one for months to come out on DVD, and after seeing it I was slightly disappointed at the lack of pace and development in the second half. But still Vinterberg is a very talented (duh!) filmmaker, and perhaps I need to watch it again; but I did not see anything deserving of an 8+/10 rating.

  jessicafischerqueen: Jinx!

I'd say it was a tremendous coincidence that I just downloaded "The Hunt" today. I've not watched it yet. It's not really a coincidence though, since of course we share deep common interests in film, music, sports psychology, history, culture, and even chess.

Mainly however what I value in you is you, and that's why I regard you to be an honest and trusted friend. We've certainly had some honking fights and perhaps more to come, but all that goes down easy with me when the delights of friendship are at hand. I hope to remain your friend so long as we live. I'll take this opportunity to quote you, as I remember it.

  jessicafischerqueen: Remember the "Blue Elephant"?

LOL what a great avatar that was, and added bonus of various people referring to you as "The Elephant." You had that one for a good while.

Years ago when I was switching avatars on a daily basis you were discussing this odd behavior with <Eyal> over at his house.

Your verdict?

"Silly girl."

I laughed so hard and felt so warm when I read that. I never forgot the pleasure of it.

Apr-05-13  crawfb5: I still remember the Betty Boop avatar with fondness.

Speaking of great moments in film, this was what I needed after the week I've had:

jessicafischerqueen: <Big> Yes I don't know who would have uploaded Betty in the first place. Personally I suspect Daniel.

What a great video clip! http://www.wimp.com/germanshepherd/

In this age of CG effects, how refreshing to see some proper human-dog legerdemain. Also, the guy keeps cracking up and adds to the warmth of what might otherwise have been a really scary movie.

Ok it still skeered me.

One wonders what you might be doing surfing a site called "wimp.com"?

Interesting domain name, I suspect others covet it.

Apr-05-13  crawfb5: Ok, I confess I saw a link to it on FaceBook. I'm only on there because of the dog rescue stuff, although funny things pop up from time to time. I have seen that kind of clip before, but not with the cameraman losing it.

jessicafischerqueen: Well the dog rescue activities are crucial. They certainly justify using facebook, let alone wimp.com.

Facebook keeps tricking me into not allowing my account to die by emailing me from various "contacts". You have to not click on anything to do with your account for a year or something to get rid of the damn thing.

Actually nowadays websites and downloads are becoming so intrusive on your computer that you might not be able to get rid of or sign out of anything.

I was perusing the Google Chrome Help forum yesterday on "How to sign out of Google Chrome."

This is a serious forum so I burst into laughter when the first reply said (in all seriousness):

"You can't sign out of Google Chrome."

HAHAHAHAHAHAAH

Several posts below, there were actual instructions on how to sign out of Google Chrome. You can, of course.

However, if you want to delete the whole thing off your hard drive, you'd better bone up on how to search and safely delete keys in your registry.

Yep, good old Google. They are like the mother in this song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmmK...

One more computer geek thing- if you really care about the sound on a video, click on the highest "p" value- 1080, 720, 480 and so on.

The video I posted here should be played at 480p, the highest Pee Value.

If you compare it to 240p, you'll see how CRAP it sounds at that low level.

"Low Pee Values" are just as odious as they sound. it's not just video compression- they also compress sound files, which makes them sound like they come from inside a tin can.
