| May-09-13 | | Travis Bickle: Jess about the James Taylor interview, Taylor's comments about Elvis were dead on. Elvis was really electrifying in his early years of Rock N Roll. After Elvis went into the army he was ruined by his manager Col. Parker. He had Elvis make these really stupid cheesy films with his songs in them.
Paul McCartney once commented, "after the army Elvis's twinkle in his eye was gone", referring to Elvis losing his Rock N Roll edge. Elvis was very patriotic and even went to the Whitehouse believe it or not & talked Richard Nixon into making Presley a DEA Agent LOL! He told Nixon people like The Beatles were destroying America's youth and that he could get control as a drug enforcer. In actual fact at that point The Beatles had split up and the individual ex Beatles had greatly cleaned up as Elvis was getting worse taking Demerol & synthetic Heroin among dozens of other drugs. As to John Lennon absorbing and filtering in musical ideas of other artists I think James Taylor is very astute on this. I have a radio segment where John Lennon got a fantasy job when a New York radio station asked him to be DJ for a day in 1974 and John brought some of his favorite records. At 2:17 of this interview Lennon breaks down a song brilliantly by The Electric Light Orchestra. Lennon really was a musical genius and absorbed musical ideas from many other artists and forms of music and being on the edge of creativity pushed those ideas farther on Beatles albums & his solo work. P.S. James Taylor said during The White album that he could see the individual styles of McCartney & Lennon, because that really was a different kind of Beatles record, as the other 3 Beatles were basically session players to the authors song. http://youtu.be/QiZHkhqQWaE |

Wow- thanks for the deep background historical information. I did understand that last point about what Taylor said about the White Album, but the syntax in my post about it is so tortured that it appears to mean the opposite of what I actually said. Possibly I should be asking <Ohio> to edit all of my posts so that I, too, might one day be able to write English so others understand it. Seems like it would be a lot of work for him though, since he's already editing the biographies. Your analysis of John's creative process may be more faithful to what Taylor said- I think your analysis is accurate about all pioneers, not just John. I just thought Taylor put more of a slant on it that implied there might be other artists who were more truly groundbreaking, although he didn't actually say that. As you point out in your post, geniuses absorbs ideas from other artists and then push the ideas farther. <QUESTION:> Can we say that Colonel Sanders was terrible for The King, but that Yoko was actually good for John?
Or is the answer even more complicated than that? I'm not sure how I feel about Elvis being managed by the front man for a fried chicken chain, although I do understand he enjoyed fried chicken. I enjoy fried chicken too but I wouldn't actually hire Colonel Sanders. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Jack Bauer> thanks for coming by with such a well-timed post. I'll pass on something <The legendary Chessmoron> said to me when I told him I almost never slept. It's a paraphrase so I probably cocked it up:
Chinese proverb- Man who never sleeps doesn't live long. QUESTION: Is Jack Bauer a rugged woodsmen and action hero? Or am I thinking of someone else? |

I just got into explaining the history of it all. I hope you check out John Lennon being DJ in New York back in 1974. He really is entertaining! |
