<Teem> An unexpected link result! I actually saw Frank Zappa play a smallish club in Montreal- that night he chose a buffet of mad Jazz fusion and heavy metal and such. Here is some very, very early Frank from the dawn of man: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Me... |

| Nov-19-16 | | Boomie: <jessicafischerqueen: here is some very, very early Frank from the dawn of man> That is an amazing clip. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Me...) The Father of The Tonight Show meets the Father of ... What was Zappa the Father of again? Anywho, the Father of something in the realm of music. Curiously, Zappa was a visual artist first. So were Woody Guthrie and Joni Mitchell. Dylan also paints a bit. I have no clue what the connection between painting and music might be. But apparently there is one. Here are some Zappa artworks from those halcyon days: http://globalia.net/donlope/fz/note... |

<"Breezy Days" brand Tampon> Most interesting- http://globalia.net/donlope/fz/note... Zappa is a talented cartoonist, but of this array I like this abstract the best- most stately, and would show well in an Art Deco living room: http://globalia.net/donlope/fz/imag... For example, the painting in this Art Deco living room would benefit from being thrown out and replaced with Franks' abstract: http://www.majorleaguebeginnings.co... |

Fabu Factoid
One of the great odd couples in music was the marriage of Zappa and the Turtles, a successful bubble gum group. After making a boatload of money with "Happy Together" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tvu...), I guess they were looking for more of a challenge. Zappa was doing stuff with strange rhythms and melodies that presented challenges for singers. |

Here's a song from the first album (Chunga's Revenge) with Zappa and the Turtles. The complexity of this song compared to "Happy Together" is striking. Zappa's guitar is especially fonky on this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8z... |

<Hozza> Wow! If I'm not mistaken, the new White Hart Lane will be the biggest stadium in the world amirite. I just watched <Southampton> beat a troubled <Inter Milan>. Another bright spot for English clubs in Europe this year, along with Arsenal, Man City, and L_____ lol. How would you feel if <Stoke City> won the EPL Championship this year? I could live with that. I always liked Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam, and I love Joe Allen and these two Austrians SHARKIRI and ARNAUTOVICH. Arnautovich's ridiculous haircut is a bonus. |

<Hooza> brilliant pot by Bent, first time half volley in stride, with power! No keeper on earth is stopping that. Question: if Derby County got into the premier league, would they pack all 11 men inside the 18 yard box for the entire game as a "strategy"? That's what Middlesbrah is doing to Man City in the game from Week 11 that I'm watching right now. Shameful I call it, gutless scrabbling for a draw and I bet it doesn't work even. I'm surprised Middlesbrah doesn't just stack all 11 men inside the goal like Christmas logs, one on top of the other. The fan is the loser here. If the EPL had any guts they would split in half and have a Super EPL of 10 sides, to avoid this oft repeated travesty to the beautiful game. |

 | | perfidious: <jess> Deposited a post at Capablanca vs Alekhine, 1927 just now; I am curious whether you can vouch for its 'voracity' after contacting your friend <Mrs Alekhine>. |
|
Nov-21-16
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<perfidious> There is no evidence, or even vague rumor, that Alekhine was drinking to excess at the time of his match against Capablanca. Just contradict <morf>, as you already have, and ask him to post a reliable contemporaneous source if you want to go further with it. That would be a waste of time in my opinion. <morf> posts in the <He Mate Me> style, with all of that knack for getting the facts completely ass-backwards, but with none of the charm. As far as I can see from the Rogoff page, <morf's> "contribution" seems solely to be hurling baseless and stereotypical insults. He doesn't even necessarily direct them towards specific people; he seems to hurl them straight into the void for some reason. He's a truly nasty bit of work, as I'm sure you're aware. At least <He Mate Me> comes up with the most inventive, and hilarious, insults against his fellow Kiwi <Colonel Mortimer Snide>. |
|
| Nov-21-16 | | Open Defence: I think he was asking if Alekhine had his teeth extracted...during the match I believe |
|
Nov-21-16
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Deffi> I thought about that but then I figured he was just pulling my teeth. Actually I don't even remember reading that part! I just asked <Mrs. Alekhine> about that, but she says she never heard that story. The old bat. |
|
Nov-21-16
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<perfidious, Deffi> Hmm on the internets it is "reported" by several websites that Alekhine had 6 teeth extracted during the match on the internets, and the source for this seems to be from Isaak Linder's appallingly sloppy biography of <Emanuel Lasker>, which is itself not properly sourced. It's also full of mistakes and is about as edifying as a roll of toilet paper, except less useful. The websites "reporting" this seem to be just repeating this yarn and not one of them is properly sourced, or sourced at all, for that matter. I just looked in <Lynyrd Skinner's> biography of Alekhine and they don't mention this teeth extracting story. None of this means that it didn't happen- maybe it did. I wouldn't give the story any credence until I saw an actual source, preferably a contemporaneous one. |
|
| Nov-21-16 | | whiteshark: I wonder if <Mrs. Alekhine> has aproved Linders' Alekhine biography, published at Russell's this year.
The following excerpt (p6) says, that
"This book clears up some of the mysteries of Alekhine and provides some wonderful details. To name a few: – He had to give up chess for three youthful years because of encephalitis. – As a boy he was nicknamed “the quiet one.”
– He was a Red Cross volunteer during the Great War. He was twice
wounded and, indeed, was a hero, who received battlefield medals and
awards.
– He tried to become a Russian movie actor.
– When that failed he served as a criminal investigator whose job it was to study the scene of a crime and analyze it. – He was absent-minded and superstitious, being particularly fond of the
number 13.
– He nearly killed himself by falling asleep while smoking in bed. <– Six of his teeth had to be removed during the 1927 world championship
match.>
– He met the popular author S. S. Van Dine in New York and planned to
accept the role of playing a chess master in a movie based on one of
Van Dine’s detective stories.
– He was 46 when he joined the French army, as an interpreter, at the start of World War II, and he was over 50 when he survived scarlet fever. – He composed his first problem without sight of the board. – He attended Carlsbad 1929 to report on it for the New York Times. – And there’s a planet named for him."
