<toblerone chocoloate bar> Yes I remember you had an interest in <Lady Gaga>- the first time I heard <Poker Face> was when you posted it in your forum. I hadn't heard <The Fame> but I have to say I really like this video- It's quite a pointed satire against the greedy, thoughtless and ultimately boring subject matter of so many videos of this generation. I can't listen to <Kanye> boast about his chinchilla coat but I can certainly listen to <Gaga> satirize such pathetic, childish and inconsequential bragging. Ah yes and on a related topic I really do enjoy the beats and lyrics of <Dr. Dre>- he's got a sense of irony and humor as well. But I could do without him bragging about how many guns he has. My brother has lots of guns too but you don't hear him bragging about them. Of course, the main reason for that is that he thinks the Canadian government will come any day to his ranch and confiscate all of them. I suspect he has most of his guns buried around his property in titanium steel boxes. Probably gold down there too. |

<Hozz> re JMC I know this is one of your favorite groups but I can't make up my mind about them. In their time- they helped bring quality Indie Rock back to the forefront in England in as an antidote to 80s pop video/music amirite. Ahead of their time? I could google this but I trust you more than google- what record label did they sign under and which label are they on today? I may be crazy but see a resemblance between JMC and the 4AD sound, particularly from some Boston Acts such as <Catherine Wheel>. Am I crazy? Here is a <Catherine Wheel> track written about a friend of theirs suffering from heroin addiction: "Judy Staring at the Sun" (with guest vocalist Tanya Donnely) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQ1... |

<Dom> funny you should say that about <JMC> and 4th generation Velvets. I think that's a little harsh on JMC, but I'm sure they can take it. If I'm not mistaken, their motto is "We're JMC we do what we want." But I know what you mean.
I own (stole) every Velvets record and there is an incredibly wide diversity in the kinds of music they produced. It certainly wasn't "Lou Reed and his band" it was a true collective, and much of their product bears very little resemblance, one track to the next, one record to the next. <Lester Bangs> insisted that "White Light" was one of the the greatest records ever made in history, second only to <Van Morrison's> Astral Weeks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHb... <David Bowie> loved the Velvets, and his wonderful homage made the cheeky claim that "I could do better than that..." lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5P... Certainly <JMC> are influenced by one aspect of Velvets style, but there were there were so many different "Velvet styles" to be influenced by, weren't there. One might even say everyone was influenced by The Velvets. Here's a recent case in point for me, a new indie band track that owes more than a little to "Heroin" and probably a few other Velvets numbers- it's a very minor track by a virtually unknown band called <"The Shacks"> who would likely never have reached any audience at all if the new <"ARCHIE AND JUGHEAD MEETS TWIN PEAKS"> TV show hadn't licensed one of their tracks, called "No Surprise." I first heard "No Surprise" whilst watching that execrable TV show and when the song started playing in the background, I forgot all aboot the show. I started thinking "Hey is this a Velvets track I forgot to steal?" So I started to investigate. Never did finish watching the TV show. I really like this track. I like it so much that I wish I could take it back into the studio and order the engineers to fix the bloody thing. I think they should have cut out both bridges and replaced them with two more verses. Oddly, nobody asked me my opinion about this. At any rate I still love the song, and see if you can hear Velvets in the opening bars through the first verse- <The Shacks: "No Surprise>" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOx... For best results wear headphones- (good ones, not the crappy kind they sell at TESCO.) Do they have TESCO in Ireland? Or is that one outrage Oliver Cromwell spared your benighted people? BONUS- Do you know aboot NIGHTCORE? It's a global collective game that anyone can play, very hip these days with people who love crappy Japanese anime (which is all Japanese anime). You just speed up the track of any song ever made by 50% and then stick a Japanimation cell on the cover. "No Surprise" NIGHTCORE version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxU... |

<Hozza> I love Catherine Wheel and Tanya and all the Boston indie bands from around that time too. I listened to "Judy Staring at the Sun" around 1000 times before actually listening to the words- it's about a friend of the lead singer who is succumbing, horribly, to a serious heroin addiction One of the things I like best about <Tanya Donnely> is her inventive, frequently incomprehensible lyrics, such as on <Gepetto> here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYU...
Favorite line from the track: "Decapitated all my dolls..." lol |

<tbon> Kpop Tarts LOL I just now got that a week later! Man am I stupid. AHAHAHAHAAH I could have been making this joke for 10 years here but nobody in Korea has ever heard of a Pop Tart. Do you think we could market them? We'd need to buy a licence. Here is a vintage <Pop Tart> video that's a little upsetting because I think the toaster looks and sounds like a pedophile: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-H... Here is a <Kpop Tart video> that's also a little upsetting because it's fckn obscene (pardon my French): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2y3... |

<Saint Sy of Flagon> Sorry to be so late getting back to your latest informative, and funny footy posts. I finally watched <Spurs v Man City> yesterday and I have turned off my phone and taped black plastic garbage bags to every window in my apartment and turned out all the lights. Now I'm going to lie on the floor and stare at the ceiling for three days Feel free to post any spoilers for the next while- as you know, the "Green Grass Gay Caballero Cup" semis are on now and I really don't care about that. Just more salt in the wound, given that <Spurs> bowed out from that tournament months ago by fielding the <St. Swithens Girl's Middle School> team against <West Ham>. Yet another great call from our sainted gaffer. |

<Trapper John, MD> I didn't know you saw two shows in the same tour! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7B... Imagine if you could take a whole summer off and just follow the concert eh? My friend Andrew followed <The Grateful Dead> for a summer back in the day. He said it was the best thing he ever did in his life. Here is my favorite song Andrew ever wrote and sang, based on a story from an <Andre Breton>< novel aboot a woman who said she could hear voices coming from a fountain. They locked her up in a mental asylum because of it. I made this video to go with the song, which is called "Nadja": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Py... |

That's a nicely constructed video. I first assumed you had agglomerated a number of different 'Nadjas' with similar looks, but now I'm believing they are all the same person. The still shot with a busy world sitting atop her hat reminded me of one of my favourite photographers, Kirsty Mitchell - check out her work here: https://www.kirstymitchellphotograp... Re: footy. I am equally depressed after a recent ManU non-performance in the Cup. Regarding Man City, they are just too good this season. End of. There is even talk of them moving in for <Alexis Sanchez> and <Virgil Van Dijk>, which would be the final straw. Saw an interesting interview with <Sean Dyche> earlier. He picks his transfer targets mostly on character and reliability. No flamboyant, moody primadonnas, just honest, hard working people who will stick to a plan. Seems to be a successful philosophy for Burnley. Maybe some of the bigger clubs ought to sit up and take notice. He also revealed that he listens to Kasabian and The Smiths and his mother calls him <Ginger Mourinho>. Ha,ha, I've been enjoying the Velvets vs JAMC discussion. Couldn't possibly comment though, as I'm currently experiencing Bob Ross video overload and my head is so dangerously filled with 'happy little clouds' it might pop. Never a viable option to quarrel with anyone after imbibing some of Bob's chilled demeanor. Given half the chance, I would parachute a few of his videos into the Middle East, to calm down those hotheads. Bob's effortless technique, and familiarity with the Alaskan landscape are a treat to behold: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vlu...
I wonder if your inner progrocker has ever led you to listen to <Steven Wilson> or his band <The Porcupine Tree>. Well anyway, here is <The Raven That Refused To Sing>. Damn, this will blow away my happy little clouds - oh well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8s...
That's from one of my favourite albums ever. Very tinged with a Genesis vibe ( - I'm told he had been working with Steve Hackett in the studio prior to recording it). |
