 | | OhioChessFan: <The one about Robin Hood> <Don't know it. Do I <even> want to know it?> I think it goes:
There was a man named Robin Hood
Who lived in the Nottingham wood
He learned how to fawn
From old Little John
And made Marian whenever he could |

I think that might be the "G rated" one. Maybe we should check out the "PG 17" one before final judgment. I think <Tim> has it. |

<Gentlemen> I don't think we will make it through eh? Every time I look at the chessgames.com forum I think of the way <Captain Nemo> shut down the IMDB chat. <Ohio> famously warned <Daniel> about that some months ago. <Nemo> got sick and tired of trying to wrangle the vicious fights on the IMDB Horror board, with which I was intimately involved, very much to my discredit. There were no problems with the hundreds of other IMDB chat boards, not even the Politics Board. Just the Horror Board but that was enough. Hacking, socking, death threats, spillover into other venues such as facebook, youtube and you name it. Nobody in their right mind would want to administer that chat room. So they stopped. I don't think chessgames.com will go down forever. I think it will be maintained as a database, but a database with no live chat function. All of our work will be saved, but the one thing that made this site special- the kibbutz function- will be gone, I fear. Anyways, either way I would miss talking with you gentlemen more than any other aspect of cg.com. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <JFQ: Hacking, socking,> <tuttifrooty> and all of those accounts are a pox on this site. A simple solution would be to charge $5 an account to open it. That wasn't Daniel's style, so be it. <death threats, spillover into other venues such as facebook, youtube and you name it.> The death threats here are unacceptable. It's been Daniel's site and I mostly get along well with <Travis> but if I ran the place, he'd have one chance to knock it off and then be gone. I guess there are other people I have issues with, but death threats on a chess site......the King's English fails me. <I don't think chessgames.com will go down forever. I think it will be maintained as a database, but a database with no live chat function.> That's my best guess too.
<All of our work will be saved, but the one thing that made this site special- the kibbutz function- will be gone, I fear.> Yep, yep. I will note that if not for the kibbutz function, the vast majority of people who have done the vast majority of work wouldn't have bothered. There are a couple who really don't kibbutz much except in their work, but I don't think it's worth it if I can't have some fun along the way. <Anyways, either way I would miss talking with you gentlemen more than any other aspect of cg.com.> Likewise. |

| Aug-19-18 | | thegoodanarchist: It's an over used phrase, but whatever will be will be. A tautology to state the obvious? Yes. But it is also grounding, calming. At least for me. It reminds me that the things I have control over in my life are far fewer than the things in the world I cannot control, and the older I get the less I worry about those things which I can do nothing about. |
|
| Aug-19-18 | | JimNorCal: And just to confirm, we all of us know, right, the difference between kibitz and kibbutz? Sorry, my librarian side is coming out. On a more somber note ... good luck, <Sargon>, but there's no evidence so far that he's been able to fix anything? Or is stuff happening but just in other areas than what catches my attention? |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
I know!
"kibbutz" is past tense of "kibitz."
Yesterday I kibbutz many times. |
|
| Aug-19-18 | | JimNorCal: Thx for clearing that up, jfq I can relax now |

Yes, there are cat pictures.
Not in the book, of course. But they do exist. |

<JimNorCal> Well I have to confess I started with an advantage. I have just finished teaching Engrish to Korean people for the last 11 (twelve) years. |

 | | chancho: <JimNorCal> He came by today. User: sargon |
|
| Aug-19-18 | | JimNorCal: Thanks, <chancho>. He hasn't posted, of course. That's not bad, I still think it's reasonable that he could be the tech guy doing stuff in the background while a second person is chosen to be the "voice" of CG and handles interfacing with users. It's just idle curiosity, they don't owe me status updates of course. Still, a lot of people would like to know where things stand. Have they reverse engineered Daniel's password and have access to the site? Do they have a list of tasks that are being addressed one by one? Once again, good luck <Sargon>! We're rooting for you in the darkness but definitely on your side. |
|
| Aug-19-18 | | JimNorCal: Sorry, I'm wrong, <Sargon> did post. Sargon: I can only say that we are working tirelessly to restore all services and features. <Live game coverage> is one of the more <complicated> and <manual> processes, but I am making it a top priority. |

Hmm here is an intriguing entry from <Hooper and Whyld> "Oxford Companion" 2nd Edition, p.87: "Under the delusion that skill at chess is evidence of high intelligence, the public has long been fascinated with..." If "the public" glanced at our <chessgames.com> forum, I doubt it would take long for it to disabuse itself from this delusion. Even the kids in <Lord of the Flies> played more nicely together. |
