click for larger viewGelfand clearly missed IMHO the most difficult <KNIGHT PATTERN> to see on the board, <THE OPPOSITE SIDES OF A 3X5 RECTANGLE>, here the d7- and b3-squares. This pattern is *especially* hard to see on a crowded board, as it is here. The Black d7-knight just seems to come out of nowhere (the Black 2nd rank) to harvest the White b3-queen, which is <STALEMATED>. <Rob Morrison: Wow!! 16 . . . c4!! What a beautiful move! 16. a3? was a form of helpmate on white's queen but very easy to overlook the stunning reply.> Yes, Gelfand is the new challenger to World Champion Anand, is rated over 2740, and completely(!) overlooked that 16 a2-a3?? c5-c4! results in a fatal loss of material due to a <TRAPPED> queen. |

Jun-21-11 | | crawfb5: I had accepted an invitation to join a team at ChessWorld some time back, but with the passage of time forgot about it. Recently, I had a number of new games show up all at once, rather unexpectedly, I might add. Fortunately, I didn't have much of an existing game load. Anyway, here's a position from my first "team" win I thought you might enjoy. crawfb5-NN

Jun-22-11 | | crawfb5: I will have some more stuff to send you in the near future. I am just now working my way through the mid-late 1950s of <Chess Life>. There's a Fischer loss to Bisguier in the 1956 Rosenwald tournament that nobody has bothered to upload. Maybe I'll do that this weekend. To tide you over, here are Fischer's ratings for 1956-1958: May 1956 -- 1726
May 1957 -- 2231!!
Mar 1958 -- 2626!!! (second only to Reshevsky) |

Jun-22-11 | | TheFocus: <crawfish> All of Bobby's tournament games are in here. Please see my game collections. Here is the game you mean. Bisguier's win over Bobby. Bisguier vs Fischer, 1956 |

Jun-22-11 | | TheFocus: Actually, there are four games and the final moves of the match game 2 against Euwe missing. I posted the game-scores in my collections. I really ought to upload them. |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: A game just played on ICC ...
Its a BULLET game! (One minute, NO delay or increment.) Black is a fairly well-known figure on ICC, he is an IM, and (as I understand things); he also does a lot of lessons there on ICC. (In one minute ...) Sometimes I LIKE to to take things out of book as quickly as possible, to see if your opponent is really thinking, or just pushing wood. A.J. Goldsby I (1742) - Abedov (1892) [C00]
ICC Internet Chess Club, 22,06,2011.

I was TRYING hard to crack open his King (by purposely giving back material) and mate, as I only had around 10 seconds (or less!) on my clock. (I give the final position of the game - below.) click for larger view |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: He is not the first IM that I have beaten there, the other night I beat GM Danielsen, also (a few days before that); one of ICC's top one minute players. [I got lucky, he played a line I knew, (and have studied extensively with Fritz); I was able to bang out the first 20+ moves very quickly - thereby accruing a large time edge on the clock.] |

Jun-23-11 | | playground player: <Jessicafischerqueen> Jess, you're the chess historian in this neighborhood, so I appeal to you for information. Do you have any pictures of Thomas Wilson Barnes before and after his weight loss of 130 pounds in 10 months? Is there any information as to the exact cause of his weight loss? Did he put himself in the hands of a quack, or was this his own doing? I didn't get where I am today by losing 130 pounds in 10 months. |

|
Jun-23-11 | | crawfb5: <PGP> This is what <Westminster Papers> had to say in their obituary of Barnes: <His illness has been a long and painful one. This time last year he weighed 16 stones; he went abroad, and his strength seemed suddenly to leave him. With difficulty he got into a cab. He gradually wasted away, until he became 7 st. 8 lb., and this was the last time he was weighed (two months since), and he was certainly much less weight at the last. Physicians were in vain. No one really knows the cause of his death; some have suspected a cancer in the stomach, and, unfortunately, he would not give permission to have a post mortem, so that the real cause will always remain a matter of surmise. Our impression is that he died from "banting." From being an enormous eater he suddenly stopped his food, taking meat only once a week; and soon, from want of use, the stomach refused to fulfil its functions. He died in peace, and desired kind remembrances to all his friends. To us his last words were whispered, "Kind, kind to the last; God bless your wife and little ones." He lost his voice ten days before his death, and for twelve days he ate nothing.> There is an engraving of Barnes on the cover: http://books.google.com/books?id=iy... |

 | | Phony Benoni: A stone being 14 lbs, we're talking a drop from 224 lbs. to 106 lbs two months before his death. "Banting" refers to a popular low carb diet of the time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willia... I'd be more inclined to blame a condition like stomach cancer. |
