<The Painted Veil>

The only people I knew were from your top 12 MANC list were old pop stars. I'm not sure if that's a point against me or in my favor.

I was, however, cheered to see <Caroline Aherne> on an all-time top 12 <Manchester United> list.

Her contribution to footy, and to sitting around the telly all day, are well documented in her fabulous Christmas special <The Royle Family tries to sell Memphis Depay, but no takers>.

I regard her writing, acting, and footy to be genius level. Some call her the "Eusabio" of TV, and with good reason.

I was gutted that <Bernard Sumner> didn't make the top 12 <United stars>. He's anything but an also ran. For me he's an immortal, well over 90 and look what he can still do- 10/10 performance of "Temptation" here at the notorious Finsbury Mud Farm festival: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B6...

I have seen just about all of <Dr. Brian Cox's> documentary presentations. My favorite appearance is the "clip" where he is complaining about the telly producers forcing him to tape "mini summaries" to insert into an episode "AS IF THE PUNTERS ARE GOING TO TURN OVER TO ANOTHER STATION IF I DON'T TELL THEM WHAT HAPPENED 2 MINUTES AGO."

I almost died laughing at that.

God bless Manchester and all who sail in her, I say.

I tried to find the <Alfrie Woodward> footy doc you recommended but it's off limits. BBC2 is aggressive on their copyright- there were two uploads of the doc on youtube but they have been deleted, as have the channels of the geezers who uploaded them.

I consoled myself by watching "Temptation" again, and then viewing this 45 minuter <How England Won the 1966 World Cup> lol Nobby Stiles only crabby people don't like Nobby Stiles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXb...

I doubt I'll find anything you don't know well, but this <Cloughie> doc is top shelf, top shelf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mao...

Oh and that movie that has the old footy fan turn around in his living room and who does he see but ERIC TWATTING CANTONA standing there.

Cantona played himself in this excellent film that <Hozza> recommended to me. Legendary <Ken Loach's> "Looking for Eric": https://www.imdb.com/title/tt124254...

I will never get tired of watching this. Eric Cantona all 82 goals for Manchester United, and it only took him 14 minutes!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZV2...

May-18-19  Paint My Dragon: <Peter Crouch> on the Graham Norton Show tonight – I’d completely forgotten that his chant at Liverpool was “He’s big, he’s red, his feet stick out the bed …”. Good old Scowse humour.

I’d not seen that <Cantona> goal reel, so thanks for the link. Somehow, his goals became a bit more flamboyant when he entered his ‘collar up’ phase. I’m not sure an upturned shirt collar can actually enhance performance, but it definitely made him look and perhaps feel, more of an artistic ‘maestro’.

<Cloughie> was amazing in his golden days. The manager England should have had, without a doubt. I’ve probably seen three or four documentaries about him and Taylor over the years, but will have a look at that one in case it's new to me. I spoke with him many times in the late 90s. My workplace was close to a newsagent shop that his son Simon owned, and Cloughie would be in there helping out behind the counter most days. Sometimes you could banter with him, and on other occasions he looked too glum or spaced out, so you knew to bite your lip, pay for the goods and get out. Of course, this was the period that he was being investigated for allegedly taking bungs, so the combination of bad health and stress looked like it was slowly taking its toll.

Shame there was no <Alfie> action on YouTube, but that other ’66 documentary you linked is very good, for sure. And one day, I will catch the Cantona movie – I really hated the sound of it at the time of release, but several people have since given it a positive endorsement.

Spooky story - I watched a documentary today about a young woman called <Marie O’Day>, who had a very unfortunate argument with her boyfriend, I think in the 1920s. As a result, her murdered, dead body was dragged out of the Utah Salt Lake a good while later. Being in a petrified state, it was perfect for parading around American carnivals for years to come, as part of a freak show act. My very next item for viewing … and you can probably see where this is going … was <Carnival of Souls>, a movie about dead bodies being dragged out of the Utah Salt Lake, next to the site of a carnival. Wow, scary coincidence or what?

But yes, I thought <CoS> was very good. It oozes 60s nostalgic charm and I can see why it would have iconic appeal for horror fans. Once you get past the budget issue and cheesy dialogue, there’s a lot that the director gets right, starting with that chilling soundtrack of organ music and an insidious creepiness that never goes away. I also thought that the female lead did a great job and was quite mesmerizing to watch. Not the finest advert for ‘men’ though - a pushy, creepy, sexist bunch, if ever there was – even the therapist guy seemed to be faking his concern for her mental health.

So many sub plots to all this I'm gonna run outta paper on your forum.

<Paint it Thinner>, <hooza>:

Sorry lads but I have not read your posts yet because I don't know when the <FA Cup final> is, and there is no way to check without running into spoilers.

Mainly because it might already have happened for all I know.

I should have written down the date in advance like a normal person- a person who is too mean to pay for a telly subscription, and only watches footy on internet replay.

I will be sure to reply once I see the match.

Whenever it is. Soon I should think?

Have a good cup final.

You might also enjoy this episode of The Likely Lads (two cantankerous, non-politically correct Geordies, big the 1970s)

They are trying at all costs to avoid finding out the footy score ... sounds familiar?

<Top Mancs>
You were right to be outraged at Sumner's omission - not fair to include Curtis without the guy who picked up the pieces and made it all work second time round. And he sort of grew into his singing voice, which can't have been easy. Good call.

Having said that - Dead Souls, sung by Curtis, is probably the only song that can bring me to tears!

Yeah, <Caroline Aherne> - coincidentally <Peter Hook>'s wife for a while - was a star who was gone far too soon. The perils of smoking lots of tabs. Sad.

Love <Brian Cox>. I recall the snippet you mentioned. There was a similar moment when he tells an Aussie broadcaster how he abhors being told to take out the tricky bits. A quick private lesson for the production team and they are usually agreeable to putting them back in.

<Davy Jones> of course, would have made it into the <Twelve Monkees> list.

<Hozza> that is WONDERFUL <Jack Marriot> Hero!!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB8...

Do you think <Spygate> contributed to Leeds making such catastrophic mistakes in the second leg?

lol <Frank Lampard> leading the lads in the mock cheer in the dressing room. I've never seen video of a gaffer in the dressing room before. The lads must worship <Frank> eh? Everyone probably does, except for <Leeds>.

<Hozza> ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS BEAT <VILLA> AND YOU ARE IN THE PREMIERE.

I like <Twatford> a fair bit because of <Troy Deeney>, but I know what you mean aboot the money strewn about the various clubs. Keeping up with the latest is tiring enough especially when your own club is affected, such as <Spurs> not making any signings which I call borderline criminal behavior on behalf of ownership. Anyways I was supporting <Twatford> but I always love to watch <Citeh> play. It was a cracking sack, and a very well mounted show by BBC on FA cup day as usual. Wonderful interviews and I watched almost an hour's worth too. The best interview by far with <VanSAHNT Kompany> what a classy gent he is. Soft spoken, intelligent, kind.

<Paint: Counter Paint>

"Likely Lads" vintage 70s Britcom it looks? I hadn't heard of them but great idea to have an entire 28 minute show on avoiding a footy score.

I did manage to get to the starting gate without knowing the score. Usually I don't.

Well worth the wait to see every minute pre and post game included. I thought it was a cracking match, especially from the standpoint of a neutral such as myself.

It it had been <Spurs> sacked like that I would have been dying second by second for 90 minutes.

Good call on <Curtis> lesser known track which I'm listening to right now. I didn't know <Caroline Aherne> Hooked up, but it makes sense to me. I bet Peter smoked lots of tabs too, though he seems to be ok at the moment.

Speaking of "the wives" you got me remembering <Stephen Morris'> wife who became such an integral part of the new group. How perfect <Gillian> was starring in my favorite music video all time:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxD...

May-23-19  Paint My Dragon: Yes, I guess the match would please anyone who enjoys top quality attacking football. A pity it wasn't more competitive in terms of scoreline, but City are just that good right now.

Europa Cup Final on Wednesday I think.

You weren't a little bit surprised that I reported back so quickly on Carnival Of Souls? Okay, okay - it was freely available on YouTube ... I confess there was no impressive foraging involved!

That <Marie O'Day> story, by the way, can be read at ...

http://www.sideshowworld.com/110-Mu...

if you're not already familiar with it.

May-23-19  Paint My Dragon: That is a brilliant video for <Temptation>, but I don't think it's <Gillian Gilbert> in it. I could be wrong, but doesn't Gillian have a less round, more horsey-shaped head? In the nicest possible sense, of course ...

Quite right! Good eye you have:

"Victoria Bergsman of Swedish band The Concretes acted the role of the protagonist in the video."

Gillian did, however, play the role of the first horse killed in the chilling psychological thriller <Equus>.

Oh I forgot to thank you for accidentally recommending the <Serious A> league.

I have just been watching the last round of three games in that league and this is exciting footy there's no doubt about it.

Another good thing about <Serious A> is that it provides a home for every single <Dutch and Slavic> footballer, apparently.

As you probably know, their top clubs have as few real Italians as <Swift Brand Premium Ham> clubs have real Englishmen.

May-24-19  morfishine: Hi <Jessica>! Here's a Vivaldi piece that I love dearly. I would recommend listening to every minute, its only 9 minutes long, so enjoy every minute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY3...

Best always, morf

May-25-19  Paint My Dragon: <Jezza>

<Gillian did, however, play the role of the first horse killed in the chilling psychological thriller <Equus>>

I feel deeply ashamed for making equine comparisons. In truth, there's no real horsey resemblance, but what word is there that describes a more elliptical, less round face. Aquiline? I dunno, probably not. Hopefully, I'd be forgiven if she knew how many of their albums I'd bought.

Your enthusiasm for footy in all its guises is truly remarkable. I don’t think I have the patience these days, which is kind of odd, given that I spent about 5 hours today watching the rapid chess tournament from Scotland. The original plan was to actually drive up there and see Carlsen, Anand, Karjakin and others in the flesh, but in the end, I delayed my decision too long and the tickets sold out. Drat! Never mind. If this performance of <The Scottish Play> goes down well, they might return next year.

There must be big profits in whiskey distillation, ‘cause those elite players certainly don’t get out of bed for a typical Scottish wage.

Well yes, as Canadian humorist <Stephen Leacock> remarked, "If the Scottish people stopped drinking Scotch, they could save up enough money to leave Scotland."

May-25-19  mckmac: <Jessica> Stephen Leacock should be more widely known. He could certainly turn a fine phrase.

<"It takes a good deal of physical courage to ride a horse. This, however, I have. I get it at about forty cents a flask, and take it as required."

"The landlady of a boarding-house is a parallelogram - that is, an oblong angular figure, which cannot be described, but which is equal to anything."

"Chess is one long regret.">

-Stephen Leacock

(Has the last one turned up here as quote-of-the-day?)

May-26-19  Paint My Dragon: <"If the Scottish people stopped drinking Scotch, they could save up enough money to leave Scotland.">

That would work.

Those are some choice examples from <Mr. Leacock>. I spent so many hours in the school liberry reading his volumes.

I don't recall seeing the "Chess is one long regret," but that sounds to me as if he was more than familiar with the game eh?

There's no shame in calling a rectangle a rectangle.

So there should be no shame in calling a horse-faced woman a horse-faced woman.

They are actually an intriguing breed, many blue stockings in that herd, I should think.

You know, ladies who embark on long cycling tours in the country with hard boiled eggs taped to the handlebars.

I know this breed intimately.

Sounds very intriguing, and I'd pay good money to watch the videos ... err, should there be any.

The Championship play-off kicks off about now, I believe - that's 3pm blighty time.
