Jul-24-19  thegoodanarchist: So I was in Bellevue for a business conference since Saturday. Had some free time this afternoon and decided to go to BAM, Bellevue Arts Museum, to look at arts.

(This is the Bellevue by Seattle, not the one in NYC)

One of the arts was called “Yu”, and honestly it reminded me of yu.

The artist’s name is Ron Ho. They had a photo of Ron, and he looks like he could be the brother of Don Ho. Or even the brother of Jon Ho.

<Hzzza> This "Apeman" by Kinks is pretty excellent eh. Unique spoken word rhythm of Ray Davies' singing style is always refreshing. Reminds me a bit of David Bowie at times.

heh... I had to look that up and I can tell you it was well worth it. Here is the relevant science- "The young ho", if you will:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlC...

Absolutely impossible to predict the Ho. How could this happen? STUNNING. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. He sings like <Der Bingle>, which is no mean feat.

I'm logging my "pro ho" vote now.

STRANGE FOOTY NEWS: Frank Lampard wakes up and drives to the wrong club? I watched the Chelsea season opener. Imagine my surprise when I saw Frank pitch up in the managers box!! I guess it's not that big a mistake since DARBY COUNTY and CHELSEA are right beside each other on the map.

The Puyallup moguls are legendary.

For some reason, Mr. Motto is not popular in these parts. This is where Deffie came in quite handy.

Have you properly recharged your batteries?

  jessicafischerqueen:

<Teem> I used to bet on the Puyallup Moguls team during their ill-fated foray into the <Washington State Ja Alai League>. Perhaps predictably, their insistence on competing whilst riding their motocross bikes led to serious conflict with traditional foot-bound squads.

But it's an ill wind! I have indeed had my batteries recharged, which was made much easier by my insistence on riding a motocross bike in my house whilst looking after my Mom. She remains bullish on the idea, despite a series of notable crashes. Luckily, so far the family China remains the only victim of said mishaps.

<Teem> I just bought an enigmatic Cheese History book. Imagine my surprise to find that <Puyallup> plays a central role in the story!!

Have you heard of the <Puget Sound League>? It was a highly competitive, albeit notorious, chess league that had its heyday in the 1950s, when several strong masters roamed the forests of Washington State.

I thought you might enjoy a <Puget> related trivia game. Here's how to play. I will type out a paragraph about this league, but several of the <names> will be altered. These words will be surrounded by <> thingies. Your job is two(2)fold. First, identify which words have been changed in each name. You will receive one Puget Sound Oyster for each successful identification. If you manage to supply the *real* word that has been substituted, you will receive one Puget Sound Killer Whale for each successful guess.

##########################

PARAGRAPH: (cap locks, colon)

"One of the staples of Washington State chess life in the 1950s and 60s was the Puget Sound League... <Elmars Fudd> normally played for the Latvian team and was always among the PSL's high scorers. Typical was the 1955 season where <Fudd> scored +15 -0 =1 while facing strong opposition such as <Chief Ulvested> and <National Master Buffalo Bills>."

END OF PARAGRAPH (caplocks, colon)

#####################

WARNING (cap locks, colon)

You will need to be swift- this is an open contest in which all may play!

For each word that is successfully treated by foreign contestants, you will be required to mail the requisite oysters and killer whales to your competitors.

Historical source for the game play passage:

<Donaldson, John. "Elmars Fudd: Grandmaster Without the Title" (Pomeranian Pubishing 2001), p.85>

"Pomeranian Publishing" lol that is the real name of the publisher.

Aug-21-19  Boomie: <My Sweet Baboo>

Your obsession with everything Latvian is showing. You probably are aware of the great attraction Puyallup has had for Latvian chess players. Dahlbers, Ulvestad, and Pupols to name a few. Perhaps its because only Latvians can correctly pronounce Puyallup.

In honor of the apparently defunct Great Canadian Motto Contest, here is a cut from Motto the Hoople - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfw...

I know it looks out of focus but that's how they actually looked since they preferred to perform underwater.

<Teem> You really know your Latvian cryptozoology eh? Impressive. By any chance did you actually attend the match <Elmars Zemgailis> played against <Power to the Pupols> in Seattle in 1960 I think it was? I was just reading it a few minutes ago and I already forgot the exact date.

I will be uploading the match to cg.com eventually. I am collecting them very very slowly as it takes a lot of time to type up a PGN or "piggun" as we call them in Canada.
