Cheers, <Jess>. Sounds an amusing game, but one I'll have to leave for those long winter evenings in July/August.

<Cibabator> I had a good antipodean mate at university. He came from Wallaby's Balls Sheep Station, New South Wales. Are you located near there brah.

Apr-09-20  Cibator: <jessicafischerqueen:<Cibator> So you are antipodean?>

NZer, actually. Born in the UK, emigrated 1977 (at which point I largely gave up active participation in chess).

Aha so you were podean in grim Albion, but grew weary of trudging the drafty halls of Christmas Cambridge, amid suspiciously lurching Lovecraftian nightmares posing as underclassmen.

Solution? The antipodes. How you must have thrilled riding the majestic Kiwi on the sheep ranches, with the hothouse siroccos blasting your weatherbeaten beard in the dead of December...

I have always suspected the last real men lived in the antipodes.

Apr-09-20  Cibator: February is usually the hottest month in these parts; them humid nor'westers very oppressive at times. December can be wildly changeable, more than one Xmas Day has been greeted with sheeting rain and wind, just like "home".

Albion only became grim because the future (and still current) Cibatrix wouldn't have been there. And have to admit taniwha don't make up for absence of Machen-nations etc.

Nice one! I like a good romance.

I did have trouble parsing your last sentence though. If I have this right, you moved to New Zealand and married Arthur Machen?

Good choice! He is a terrific horror writer.

<Cibator> I did have trouble parsing your last sentence though.>

Taniwha - "In Mâori mythology, taniwha (Mâori pronunciation: [ˈtanifa]) are beings that live in deep pools in rivers, dark caves, or in the sea, especially in places with dangerous currents or deceptive breakers (giant waves). They may be considered highly respected kaitiaki (protective guardians) of people and places, or in some traditions as dangerous, predatory beings, which for example would kidnap women to have as wives." (Wikipedia)

In other words, the nearest equivalent we have here to Machen's malevolent "fairy-folk" (= "Machen-nations"*), or Lovecraft's Cthulhu.

* A lame and rather pointless bit of word-play on "machinations". My punning can be pretty impenetrable at times - ask <FSR>.

<Team Teem>

I had no idea those "proto Python" shoes existed! They are treasures eh? You also get a real historical insight into just how dry- and effective- English comedy was in the pioneer TV days, with the surrealism lurking behind the scenes.

Later of course Python would create a new genre of British comedy by leading as aggressively as possible with the most surreal humor yet seen in world history.

<Cibator> To be honest I never google so I had no chance to get the first reference. It would have to have been much Maori obvious for me to get it.

Not to get "machinations" was sheer doziness on my part.

I notice you didn't actually deny you are married to Arthur Machen...

<Teem> Yes, it is as a matter of fact. Fun fact it's no joke Western and Eastern Canadians say "eh" non-stop and nobody knows why. The only place they don't do it is in Toronto because they are too busy watching hockey eh.

I secretly nominated you for <Funniest Kibbutzer> over on this Academy Awards page: Caissars Voting Page

If you want to put a selection in for one of the selections you just post the URL of their handle in the category.

<Ohio> put <Gerry McCarthy> in there for <Player of the Year> which I believe I will vote for him as well eh.

If you win you will be eligible for cash prizes! Simply post your bank information in my forum and I will "take care of it" for you.

Don't forget all passwords and such.

Apr-16-20  technical draw: Thanks <JFQ> for nominating me for "Best Halvah". I am honored to receive this nomination. I will continue to be best Halvah as long as I have the strength. Who ever comes in second please give me a call to discuss what the heck we won.
Apr-18-20  Open Defence: hi all, whats the Latvian Chess Project about ? and are you covering Alexander Koblencs ?
Apr-18-20  Boomie: <Open Defence: hi all, whats the Latvian Chess Project about ?>

It's about this high and about this wide and about which I'm singing about.

Oh, Latvian Chess Project
Hear my plaintive call.
Why is everyone included
Except Mikhail Tal?

Hi <Deffi!>

It's about adding new games to Latvian player pages, adding new Latvian players, and trying to write or improve the bios for them. Very slow going though. If you look through my forum bio you will see it full of Latvian stuff.

I found around 150 of these <Alexander Koblents> games and <Annie> uploaded them. Now he is a "3 pager."
