<For some reason I remember him as being a midget>

You may have been recalling his days in the Newcastle Under-12s team.

More seriously, I think it was his running style. He bent his body over the ball more than anyone else I can think of, so his verticality was greatly reduced. Putting his weight forward like that probably explains why he could dribble so well - always on the front foot.

Nov-27-20  Paint My Dragon: <Crouchibald>

... would indeed have made a lethal striking partnership for the <Harry Hotspurs>, but only one of them could give his head a nasty bump on the crossbar.

Arghh! Keegan should have figured in my list. What was I thinking?

Erratum:

11. Crouchy Keegan.

<POD People>

I left <Kevin Keegan> off my list as well and it's all down to a prejudice I had against him back in the day.

I watched BBC "Match of the Day" every weekend in those days and my favorite players were predictably <Keegan/Francis/Archibald>.

When Keegan begged off world cup duty for the second time in a row due to a "sore back" I was disappointed- and disgusted.

I maintain this was a kind of nervous breakdown due to the pressure.

He was already under pressure in the pundits sweepstakes to determine if he or Francis was the best English footballer in training.

So Roger is insisting to his long suffering producer that he hadn't said any profane words on that night's telecast.

Producer: "Does the phrase Margaret Twatting Thatcher ring a bell."

Nov-27-20  Cibator: VIZ query (as we seem to have a fan or two on here): does anyone remember seeing a strip called "Men With The White Vans" back in the early days? Explain later.
Nov-27-20  Paint My Dragon: <Cibator>

I don't recall it and it doesn't feature on this list ...

Although I can't vouch for its accuracy.

So many competing theories about <King Kev>. He is a complex character and can still divide a room full of footy experts.

When I speak to hardcore Newcastle fans I will often hear words like perfectionist, ambitious, honest, passionate. Others will say disloyal, quitter, restless, impetuous.

Hard to fathom. He had a record of dropping out of everything - the question seems to be - was it for the best of reasons? i.e. did he genuinely believe that he could no longer add anything. That was sometimes his claim.

Or was he some sort of diva cum glory-seeker who couldn't face the prospect of mediocrity or being tied down?

Or could he no longer handle pressure, as you mentioned?

I wish I knew the answer.

<Pardon My Dirigible>

At the end of the day <Kevin Keegan> was one of the greatest footballers ever.

If I hadn't been such a big fan, I wouldn't have been so disappointed he missed those World Cup appearances.

On other news, I saw <ManCity> limping across the finish line against <Olympiakos>.

Oh also tomorrow morning <Spurs> will allow 2000 punters in to the new White Hart Lane!

I guess the new stadium is big enough so the punters can sit a kilometre away from each other.

Nov-29-20  Cibator: <PasteMyWigOn>: In NZ we used to get an Australian edition of VIZ - all the UK favourites were there, but when the Ockers get their hands on anything they always have to put their own mark on it as well. So there was the odd locally-produced strip - "Men With White Vans" being one of these - and all the addresses in the Letterbocks were Aussie as well (though I wouldn't be surprised if much of the actual letter content was lifted straight from the original British comic).

"MWWV" satirised Aussie tradesmen and construction-workers of the time, with their obligatory mullet haircuts, drunkenness, coarse sexist behaviour, and reckless driving in the eponymous vans. Hilarious, but a front-runner for the most crudely-drawn strip of all.

Nov-29-20  Paint My Dragon: <JessicaMischaQueen>

Serious stuff. Goodbye Latvia … and hello White Hart Lane, eh?

Finally, some actual footy fans in the stadium. No, 2000 isn’t very many, but it will still look more packed than the Spurs trophy cabinet! Sorry, couldn’t resist that one.

You were dead right about <Vinegar> and <Tomato> being my favourite crisp flavours.

I couldn’t however work out why I was watching the <1975 Acorn Stakes>. I even watched right to the end, thinking that something cataclysmic was going to happen, like a massive horsey pile-up or a garotted jockey. But no … not even a streaker to enliven the action.

Still – “from tiny <acorns>, mighty oak trees doth grow” – as Oscar Wilde was once fond of saying. Or was it Kim Wilde? I forget.

Another action packed weekend has passed. Plenty more footy to absorb. Personally, I’ve been glued to ‘Brady versus Mahomes’ in the U.S. version of the game, but will switch back to the EPL in a short while.

And if you spot any highlights of <Rueben SmokyBacon> playing for Olympiakos, do let me know.

Nov-29-20  Paint My Dragon: <CyberBaker>

Blimey. Not heard of that. A curious decision to let others run riot on the mag, but the prospect of an overseas market opening up may have outweighed any reservations.

This many years on, those early Oz editions might be worth serious money. Not just in terms of age and rarity, but also for the novel content. Aussies with mullets drinking and swearing? Ramsey Street would never be the same again.

<The Painted Bird>

I don't think they play football in the U.S. brah. You might be thinking of "based balls"?

Well good job on the Reds in grey strip and <Good Golly Miss Saltchosbeetle> would do well to start <Edison Calvary> every game all game.

Also I think <Wan Nutsaka> is currently the best defender in England. They'd best keep a full <Nutsaka> back there in the big tournament amirite.

On <Van der Beaker> I think they should start him and play him to the end in every game for a good stretch. Players named after popular science class gear need time and exposure to show what they can do.

This was certainly case with French striker <Pierre Pipette> and Gdansk defender <Boris Bunsen Burner>.

I was wrong about the timing= it is not until <Spurs> next fixture at home that they will let fans in.

I suppose they could have let 2000 in to White Hart Lane whilst Spurs were over at Stamford Bridge. But they will have to wait until December 6 v Gunners.

I think all the Premiere League clubs are going to let in 2000 punters per match now? It's some kind of official government permission from the <Gauleiter>, if I remember correctly...

Ironically, I almost gave you a splash of horse racing history horror, but I demurred thinking it might be in bad taste.

A mistake I shall not make again. In fact <Ruffian> broke down in a famous match race and they had to shoot her. Understandably, many of her fans also broke down in the stands. They had to shoot them as well.

I know what you mean though. I'm a horse racing fan, and I confess my favorite events are the English "grand nationals" where they have 60 horses going around 500 hedges for what seems like an hour. At least half of them go down in fiery crashes which is a lot of fun to watch.

It always is in bad taste.

Those horse racing tragedies usually end with a revolver to the head. Seriously.

They don't end well for the horse or those who care for it.

Best to omit the gruesome tails of broken limbs and such. I grew up in horse racing country, take it from me.

Good call on those right Royle highlights.

Interestingly, we call a grandma 'Nanna' here in the NE as well. Probably just a northern England thing, but I could be wrong.
