Dec-01-20 | | Paint My Dragon: Yeah, I’m not going to get carried away with one great performance, but I’m sure <Headin’Some Cavani> will be getting plenty of opportunities in the next few games. An exciting player without doubt. <Sheep Shearer>, on MOTD, rolled out his standard monologue: “If there’s any young player out there who wants to be a top striker, just check out Cavani’s movement in the penalty area …”. Heh, he’s not wrong, but he’s made the exact same speech a dozen times! Watching Ole’s latest press conference … he was asked about the Cavani language barrier: “He already knows two words. After we finish a game, he always says <Tomorrow. Off>". |

Dec-01-20 | | Paint My Dragon: “Knights on the edge, fall off the hedge”. I liked this recent idiom from <Jovanka Houska> at the Skilling Open - mainly because it can be applied to both chess and the Grand National. I can relate a little better to the <Grand National> than the Acorn Stakes. Normally a lot of fun, as you say. We always had a sweepstake at work and the winner might scoop £50, but would then have to buy cream cakes for the entire office, which probably resulted in a nett loss. Doh. Yes, Dettori, Pigott, McCoy, Walsh, I’ve probably lost money on all of them. And then there was the time in a seedy Dublin curry house when we sampled the wares, looked disapprovingly at each other, and decided we were probably eating <Shergar>. Not nice. Especially for Shergar. Another (totally unrelated) curry story occurred when visiting friends in South Norwood <London>, a long, long time ago. Who should happen to be sitting at the next table to us? None other than world champion car racer <James Hunt>, flanked each side by two saucy ‘trackside promo’ girls in matching ‘Marlboro’ t-shirts. That guy had more luck with the ladies than <James Bond>. If they captioned his pic in VIZ, it would simply read “James Hunt, f*nny magnet”. |

<Pantaloon O' Dowd> I had to give up betting on the gg's a long time ago, but I never stopped following the sport. I remember <LanFranco Dittori> winning 7! rides in one day at Ascot. It's on youtube now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-U... As you probably know, America hosts many turf races with gigantic purses so <Dittori> and <Piggot> would often pitch up for a flyer. I only saw this on TV myself. Way back in the day we used to go to our local track but it was so small they had to breed a new race of smaller jockeys to accommodate our meet. I also followed "the other racing". I saw at least three very good documentaries on <James Hunt>, <Nikki Lauda> and especially the one on future ManCity manager <Emerson Fittipaldi>. |

Dec-01-20 | | Cibator: <PMD: Interestingly, we call a grandma 'Nanna' here in the NE as well. Probably just a northern England thing, but I could be wrong.> Could be indeed. I was born and grew up in London, but we always called my maternal grandmother "Nanna". Her exact origins, birthplace included, remain shrouded in mystery - rather given to romancing, so nothing she told you could be relied on. Always claimed to be Irish (the maiden name and religion both fitted), but spoke with a normal London working-class accent. |

Dec-01-20 | | Paint My Dragon: <Stoney> That's a classic. I'm really enjoying seeing these again. <Cibator> Now that you mention it, Harry Hill, who is also a southerner, used to tell a joke about his 'Nanna'. I'm finding it hard to remember the exact wording, but the gist was that he turned up at the hospital to pay her a visit, only to be informed that they'd turned off her life support machine. Due to the financial cutbacks, the plug had been needed for something else. It wasn't possible to have toast in the mornings AND Nanna. |

Dec-02-20 | | Paint My Dragon: <The First Noel> It’s a nice dose of melancholy. Suits the show rather well I think. I confess I’ve been a fan of Noel’s writing since Oasis first began. It was a compulsory question when you read the NME – <Oasis or Blur>? – you had to choose, and I suppose the voting was expected to be influenced by the North-South divide. Realistically though, it was more a question of rock or pop, so it didn't need much thought. Of course, as brothers go, the Gallaghers are a couple of <noobs>. Sky blue noobs at that. ******************

<PAD>
I call shenanigans!
Not a real list if you include <Honorable mentions>. That is prefiguring the other peoples' lists as "mistaken and inferior" if you put people on the <Hon Men> list who belong on the main list. Shenanigans!
I have already filed a law suit (with a very tasteful cut I might add- Saville Row). I'll have my girl call your girl sometime this week. I'd have her call sooner but my English girl's on leave and I have a foreign secretary sitting in for her. Instead of answering my calls she spends all day typing up foreign policy briefs and pouching them over to No. 10 Downing. |

Dec-02-20 | | Cibator: <Who did I miss? Apart from Steve Archibald.> John White (the ghost of White Hart Lane) and his club-mates Danny Blanchflower, Dave Mackay and Cliff Jones. Hughie Gallacher! Alex James!!
James was famous enough to be name-checked in a popular music-hall song: The sentries think that it's a football that she carries in/ And when they've had a few they shout: 'Is Arsenal going to win?'/ Because they think it's Alex James and not poor Anne Boleyn/ With her 'ead tucked underneath 'er arm! (Stupid formatting won't display the lines separately without sticking unnecessary spaces between them as well. Looks slightly less crap the way I've chosen.) |

<Portobello my Daisies> Right you've set a high bar. Newcastle isn't a "foreign country" but minor pint, minor pint. I'll have to proceed scientifically to mount a proper response, so I'll do that in stages. Stage 1: "The Foreigners"
