Dec-19-07  MarkThornton: Hi <kuztown46>!

We have a very narrow path to move 25, followed by a wide choice.

Do you have any thoughts on which move 25 option I should look at first? I am still trying to decide where I can best contribute.

Best wishes,

Mark

If you are willing to look at something that has received scant attention thus far, choose among 25. e3, 25. Bxe4 and 25. Rc2. All are plausible but have not received the attention that 25. f3 and 25. f4 have received.

Dec-20-07  MostlyAverageJoe: <kutztown46> & <zanshin> & <other maintainers of the sticky>

Submitted for your proposal is the idea of adding a link to the #kibtzing anchor to the description of temporary forums, to facilitate easy jump to the latest post. A functional example has been added to the <23. Nxd7 Rxd7 24. [a4] forum> on the sticky

I have no objection to what you propose and it may provide a small additional benefit. Did you realize that I use links such as User: MostlyAverageJoe in my Forum Central? A link like this takes the user to the last page of the person's forum but at the very top of the page, making the header immediately visible. We decided a while ago that I would continue to use links like this but we would link to marker posts from the sticky. So those who want to go to the beginning of the discussion access the forum from the sticky and those who want to go to the end can first access Forum central and jump off from there.

Your solution does save a step for those who want to go the last page of a forum, but I think it's better to jump to the top of the last page rather than to the kibitzing section. Does that make sense?

Dec-21-07  MostlyAverageJoe: < kutztown46: I think it's better to jump to the top of the last page rather than to the kibitzing section. >

Maybe the first time or two, when you jump to a page you've never seen before.

Personally, I prefer getting to the kibitzing section ASAP, since I read the posts in the (recommended by the CG) sequence where the latest is on top, and there is no other easy way to get there (you have to click on the Kibitzing link, which requires mousing around and hitting the small font. I prefer to reduce chances for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and get there right away.

Note that those who want to get to the beginning or end of the page, can do so easier than by mousing/clicking: the <home> and <end> keys on the keyboard do the trick.

So my opinion is to go to the kibitzing section directly.

I guess I'm still thinking of the ideal situation where the forum host updates his / her forum header on a regular basis with a summary of the analysis going on in the forum. When that is happening, it is worthwhile to link to the top of the page.

The other issue is that many (myself included) prefer newest posts at the bottom. For us, linking to the kibitzing section does not take us particularly close to the last post. In fact, when I first tried your link on the sticky, I though it was not working properly. I did not think about the use of the <end> key, though. With your idea, someone like me could hit end and page up to get to the last post.

The bottom line for me is that I don't think it's a big deal either way. I'm all for offering lots of options to the team. Some will take advantage of it - some won't. When <zanshin> gets back, if he is willing to assume this extra little piece, I certainly won't oppose it.

Are you going to change the forum descriptions on the sticky again this turn? If you are, and if you don't mind, why don't you incorporate your idea into each forum entry on the sticky. Then you could make a post on the main page explaining how the new links work. Maybe we'll get some feedback.

Dec-21-07  MostlyAverageJoe: <kutztown46: Are you going to change the forum descriptions on the sticky again this turn?>

Will do.

Dec-24-07  zanshin: <kutz> I'm back early. We cut the trip short after our trip to Indiana. We were planning to take the kids to Chicago, but the weather turned nasty and our daughter started coming down with something. My wife and I felt like going home early. After seeing what cancer had done to our good friend, neither of us was really in the mood for sightseeing anyway.

I see that <MAJ> will update the sticky for the next round. I'll drop a note in his forum to let him know I'm around. I've been checking every once in a while and know he's doing a fine job. If he wants us to take turns, or even if he wants the role from here on, that's all cool ;-)

Glad to have you back. If 24. Ne5 wins, you'll be without a forum for two more turns. My plan is to keep the five 24. Ne5 forums and not add any at this point.

Dec-24-07  zanshin: <kutz> Sounds good to me. I'll be standing by in case <MAJ> needs help.

Dec-28-07  isemeria: Hi <Kutz>, here's some observations from the <25. Bxe4> case.

On Dec-15-07 I suggested the line 22. Nb6 Ra6 23. Nxd7 Rxd7 24. Ne5 Rd6 <25. Bxe4> fxe4 26. Rc5, with a modest question "Can we squeeze something from this position?". I posted to both main forum and the respective analysis forum (Red October). In both it was completely ignored. IIRC, after a couple of days <hovik> asked about the same variation, with similar result.

I then concluded that the variation can't be good, because of the lack of interest and because I couldn't make any progress myself. I followed the engine suggestions, and missed <Dr. Siggy's> <29. Rdxd5!> which is critical to this endgame.

Of course, when <Dr. Siggy> presented this line later, he showed initial analysis for both <26...a4> and <26...Na7> which was enough to catch team's attention. I only posted the start of the variation to the first major branch, because I had no time to investigate it further. I hoped that the win of a pawn was so apparent that others would "take the bait".

At that time we were on move 22, discussing White's 24th move alternatives. It's natural that the engine favourites like 25. f4, 25. f3 received the attention. It was not sure that we would even play 24. Ne5.

So what's the point of my story? First, I believe we still lose some "width" of analysis. In other words, analysis goes very deep in popular lines, but good early alternatives don't receive the attention they deserve. This means also a loss of time. Again, the variation was discoverd days ago, but when the voting starts we are still screaming "hold the voting" because all relevant candidate moves are not analysed enough.

This is not news, of course. You, <kwgurge>, <Boomie>, <sentriclecub> and others have been discussing about it, but no proper solution has been found. And I don't have one either. This is just another example that the problem exists. And then there's the fundamental thing that middle game positions are not solvable, so we could have a month for a move and have the same problem.

For my own part, I really don't have time for analysis because of RL obligations. But I think I need to forget those modest questions and suggestions, and use more exaggerated claims. Perhaps that would inspire others to seek for refutations. :-)

Thanks for the message. You are preaching to the choir. I don't have an answer, either. The latest example from my vantage point is the almost complete lack of interest in any black responses to 25. f4 other than Nf6 or a4, even though there are several other plausible black moves. If we play f4 and GMT makes one of these other moves, we'll be starting from scratch.

Dec-29-07  Duck McCluck: <isemeria>

I believe that it is harder to compare f4 against f3 when you make f4 wider.

Also, I think sentriclecub's tree-theory died because only 10% of our team cares about analyzing more than 3-4 positions before making a decision.

I for one would like closed voting for the first 2 outta 3 days. I also do not like how H____ and M________9 get so emotionally attached to a move and revert to snake-oil salesmanship (not my words, I'm borrowing them from the main forum).

kutztown46 and randomvisitor get my award for non-biasness leadership

If you look on page 946, right below where Chessgames.com posted ...Rd6 the winner,

<MindCtrol9: <The stronger moves to win this game If GMJT plays 25.Rd6 are:> 1.- <26.Bxe4>

2:- <26.f3> >

and then click his name...

User: MindCtrol9

It shows you his kibitzing summary...

<MindCtrol9 has kibitzed 381 times to chessgames [more...]>

Not a single kibitz to a temporary forum!!!

He decided on "the winning move" about 30 seconds after ...Rd6 came in, and he still is stealing votes on the main forum by posting all his psychotic rants.

I hope you both will enjoy my late contribution I made to the main page here Chessgames Challenge: The World vs G Timmerman, 2007

I think the forum system is great however, room for improvement exists.

Dec-29-07  MostlyAverageJoe: <kutztown46>

Sorry about the late notice, but I've just realized that I will not be able to do the sticky update tomorrow. I'll post this note on <zanshin>'s forum as well.

Dec-29-07  Duck McCluck: 8 hours to go, and only 3 votes will decide the winner

This is a very good thing because one breakthrough in either line can sway the votes (as it should be able to).

I am going to start working on the 25. f4...a4 26. BxN

I should have a line worked out in 24 hours to see if it is a dead-draw.

The team was smart in ruling out the variation where we win a pawn by force before reviewing f3 or f4.

I have great confidence in our team. f3 and f4 both will draw, but I like the collaboration. I'm going to get a premium membership in a couple weeks, and I'll volunteer it for the forum roster rotation.
