Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: <YouRang> thank you for updating the CONMAN software so pseudo contestants ELO and BOOKIE can be excluded from pair bettings. However I am worried to install it for the remainder of this tournament because I could well do something wrong. Let's hope get it ready before the last round or otherwise I make a test run after the tournament so no unpleasant problems occur for this tournament For now we still see the pseudo contestant counted for the bettings as if they were real contestant with likely average expectiations.

I know. :) After the tournament, I will reveal my method (if you want). Also, this is my second tournament (Amber was first) so winning two medals on my second try is awesome. :)

WannaBe: Wow, I suck! Time to turn my monitor upside-down again.
Jan-19-12  technical draw: <WannaBe> Maybe turning your monitor upside down will work. Are you familiar with the latin american custom that young girls have? If they are looking for a boyfriend or a husband they take a statue of St. Anthony and place him on his head. And they say to him that he will remain upside down until the boyfriend or husband appears.

You might be on to something.

Jan-19-12  technical draw: Here's a famous merengue based on the above legend:

Jan-20-12  Ragh: < lostemperor: Giri has 6 years, so that means he probably should finish school this year July at 18. > Its probably in July 2013 rather than this July. Below is Anish's quote from July 2011 right after he finished 3rd at Dortmund.

<I’ve got another two years of school to go, and I definitely want to finish. Then I’ll decide whether to study or maybe become a professional. At the moment I'm really enjoying playing chess, but I don't need to give myself extra headaches by constantly asking myself whether I'll be a pro or not.>

http://www.whychess.org/en/node/1141

Considering his stellar results in pro circuit thesedays, its OK for him not to go through those 1.5 years more at school. It might affect his professional chess results.

Penguincw: Say what are the results, are do you not prefer to do round by round?
Jan-21-12

lostemperor: <Ragh> if Giri has 1.5 years of school ahead, it may be sensible to consider stopping it for a while at least and do only chess. I would certainly advice him to do so. He can always finish school later if he reconsiders. Before, in the Soviet Union there were special school programs for chess talents to finish exams and have a lot of time to study chess. But there was and is little or nothing of this in the west. Bobby Fischer quit school. I don't know how Anand has arranged his school. I think now in India, but also other emerging countries, talents are supported and sponsored? Giri could become a main world title contender. I would certainly name him to be playing Carlsen for the title in say 10 years. If he finishes school and does not reach the final WC stages, he may always wonder what if.. There are millions who finish school but only a few has a special talent for something prestigious like Giri. Of course if he personally likes to finish school he should since everyone is different :)
