Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

Jan-16-12  Ragh: <Lostemperor: Even if he is sitting in the same highschool as I did!> Typically, At what age does one finish high school in Holland? Last August, I heard Anish say that he has two years left in school. Actually, a college -Grotius college ?! Is it called High school over there? Being a prodigy, Isn't he supposed to be in an accelerated program or something?

Penguincw: < Carlsen beat Aronian to take the lead. >

Well, didn't just about everyone predict Carlsen to finish ahead of Aronian?

Jan-16-12  YouRang: <lostemperor> Question: For the final round, do you remove the pseudo contestants (CHESSBOOKIE, ELORATINGS) from the Pair Betting results?

Unfortunately, they can easily affect how the money gets divided, and thus distort then rankings.

Jan-16-12
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: <YouRang> yes I know that they influence the pair betting ranker but once I included pseudo contestants ELO and CHESSBOOKIE in the CONMAN software I cannot get them out again by erasing their "predictions" so I have to keep them in unless you can tell me how to delete them from the CONMAN? Simply erasing their list don't work because the CONMAN keep posting them.

lostemperor: <Ragh> they don't call it high school but it is similar though 3 different levels. I don't know if high school have multiple levels also. They don't do full accelerated programs in Holland but sporting talents do get some weeks off and they can catch up later on the subjects. I would advice Giri, last January if I was his parent or coach, for sure to stop school for at least a year and do only chess because he is a very rare talent even for world standards being the youngest GM! I don't also know if Carlsen stopped school early?
Jan-16-12  YouRang: <lostemperor> If I get time, I'll see if I can come up with a software solution that allows you to define pseudo-contestants so they won't affect Pair Betting.

Could you email me your current yrc and csv files for this tournament when you get a chance?

Jan-18-12  Ragh: <lostemperor: <Ragh> they don't call it high school but it is similar though 3 different levels.> Interesting! So, how many years does one have to study in Grotius college in all for completing the 3 levels successfully.
Jan-19-12

lostemperor: <Ragh> I mean there are three levels 4, 5 or 6 years of highschool. Giri has 6 years, so that means he probably should finish school this year July at 18. He being the greatest chess talent since Carlsen, I think, he should now consider being professional. I believe Carlsen also quit school before 16 but am not sure.
Jan-19-12  rogge: Hi. Carlsen finished "highschool" June '09 aged 18.

<the greatest chess talent since Carlsen> He certainly seems to be.
