Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

Apr-19-06  TIMER: <lostemperor> Are you still going to run the final standings predictions contest now that the ChessBookie game has started?

If you are, these are my current predictions...

MTel Predictions:

1. Topalov 6.5/10
2. Anand 5.5/10
3-4. Svidler,Ponomariov 5/10
5-6. Bacrot, Kamsky 4/10

Thanks,

lostemperor: <TIMER> you bet I am! I was going to mention it again yesterday but got hung up (MTelling you).

To refresh everyone's memory here are the participants, ratings and Betsson odds (fluctuating).

1. Topalov 2804 2.36
2. Anand 2803 2.56
3/4. Svidler 2743 11.5
3/4. Ponomariov 2738 12
5. Bacrot 2708 28
6. Kamsky 2671 50

We got an interesting new data now. The bookie game odds Mtel Masters: Winner. As we can see the odds for Topalov, Anand and Kamsky are lower than the Betsson odds but from Svidler, Ponomariov and Bacrot are bigger!

The good news of this final standings prediction contest "the real thing" is that you can win points not just for the tournament winner but on all participants (which gives an accurate finalstandings prediction result). MTel has "only" 6 participants though and I am thinking to give a 6 point maximum for the annual standings recount (I will let you know before the tournament). A surprise in standings can cost dearly.

4. Svidler

lostemperor: ANNOUNCEMENT (repost): Only one week until Mtel starts (and to cast your final standings predictions, it won't cost you any chessbuck :). Six points for each correct player's standing prediction. For each difference in your prediction with the actual standing, one point deduction. It's a pity that there are only six participants in contrary to other tournaments for this prediction contest. But don't think there cannot be any surprises. Just look at last year's Mtel: MTel Masters (2005) (if you know what I mean).
May-06-06  bobbyboomer: My predicitions for Mtel:

1. Anand
2. Topalov

May-08-06  iron maiden: Sofia predictions:

ANAND: Back to resume his Wijk aan Zee battle with Topalov for the title of best active tournament player. In Corus the two of them tied for first but Anand was awarded the trophy. Don't be surprised if he gets to take home another piece of silverware here. He is healthy, still in his prime and firing on all cylinders.

My prediction: 1st place at +3.

TOPALOV: May get off to his usual slow start with a loss or two, but he won't stay at the bottom of the crosstable for long. However, if January repeats itself and the two 2800's tie for first, Vishy is likely to win the rapid tiebreak and get the trophy once again.

My prediction: 2nd place at +3.

PONOMARIOV: Fared quite well in M-Tel last year, finishing third behind Anand and Topalov despite being the lowest-rated player in the tournament. Should be clear favorite for third place this year, too.

My prediction: 3rd place at +1.

SVIDLER: Capable of winning against anybody in the field but exhaustion brought on by the anti-draw regulations could work against him in the latter half.

My prediction: 4th place at -1.

KAMSKY: Should play a few good games, but it's still too early in his comeback to expect supertournament-winning consistency from Gata.

My prediction: 5th place at -3.

BACROT: His failure to deliver at Corus and Linares is still a mystery to me. Less likely than Kamsky to be a total disaster, but also less likely to come out ahead on a most-wins tiebreak. Might also be hampered by Sofia rules.

My prediction: 6th place at -3.
