Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

May-10-06  Ezzy: <lostemperor> Hi man! Hope you are well. I see you're doing rather well in the chessbookie game. Got any tips? :-)

5 kamsky
6 Bacrot

May-10-06  Where is my mind: My predictions:

lostemperor: <Ezzy> I have a little of a bad feeling about Topalov this tournament. I think Anand will win the tournament and Topalov may become third. So in this case, you're doing just fine:). But chess is not easy to predict!

lostemperor: If I counted correctly, there are 13 votes for Topalov and 19 votes for Anand to win Mtel tournament. Topalov is the deserved # 1 of the world but only by a one point margin. Can Topalov do it again or can Anand, who also showed a constant level, overcome the one point rating difference between them. I think for Anand to do that he has to score a +2 in comparison to Topalov, since Topalov has gained points in his match vs Nisipeanu.
May-11-06  cromat: 1-2. Topalov, Anand
3-4. Svidler, Ponomariov
5. Bacrot
6. Kamsky

May-14-06  Bobak Zahmat: I think everyone has unterestimatet Kamsky. After his round 3 win over Anand he is in the lead, who in the world could predict that?

1. Kamsky, Anand 3.5

Here the results of the predictions if these halfway standings were the final standings (which isn't) with the great help of the calculating power of YouRang contest manager (adjusted). Still close together.

Last year Mtel, Robin01 was first halfway the tournament. At the end it was almost the other way around (so maybe its the other way around this time :)). I included the chessgames bookie odds (in order of odds). That is significant diferent than the Betsson odds and Elo (at the beginning of the tournament) but the score is the same.

lostemperor: For the clarity: this is what I took for "predictions" according to Elo on ratingorder (what happened to be Betsson oddsorder too). In case the ratings (or odds) of two players are almost equal I take a shared standings for both.

ELO:
1-2 Topalov, Anand
3-4 Svidler, Ponomariov
5. Bacrot
6. Kamsky

Here the Chessgames.com Chessbookie Game order of odds. As you can see there is a difference. Mtel Masters: Winner:

1. Topalov 50,808 5:6 1.83 A winning 10 chessbuck ticket pays out 18 chessbucks.

2. Anand 32,996 110 7:4 2.76 A winning 10 chessbuck ticket pays out 27 chessbucks.

3. Svidler 6,717 7 12:1 13.18 A winning 10 chessbuck ticket pays out 131 chessbucks.

4. Ponomariov 3,887 5 22:1 22.71 A winning 10 chessbuck ticket pays out 227 chessbucks

5. Kamsky 1,895 45:1 46.48 A winning 10 chessbuck ticket pays out 464 chessbucks.

6. Bacrot 1,345 64:1 65.44 A winning 10 chessbuck ticket pays out 654 chessbucks

May-22-06  percyblakeney: I made my prediction so early (posted March 22nd) that it didn't make the list. But it's the same as the one of <NakoSonorense> so it's easy to calculate the 29 points :-)

lostemperor: <percyblakeney> I will correct that. Four names were not "read" by the machine iron maiden, firebyrd, TIMER and now it certainly seem you. I understand iron maiden (because of the format) I tried to correct the input so the contest manager read it but some how it didn't work. Could it be that because I didn't put it on chronological order quite (although it did read the others)?

Yeah, nice work <cu8sfan>.

I repost the results below.

lostemperor: Here the results of the FINAL STANDINGS PREDICTION CONTEST MTEL 2006!

It's been a grueling tournament with the standings ever changing. Still the differences are relative modest (six points between the first and last). I corrected Betsson with a non shared standings for Svidler and Ponomariov. A special thanks to <YouRang>'s software. He did very well in the New, Weighted, Betting, Risk and 1-2-3 rankers on individual games results see User: YouRang.

Winners are <babakova>, <Joshka> and <Montreal1666>. Well done!!

Maximum 36 points. The top 50% cut at rank 17 (33 participants without counting Chessgames Bookie, Betsson and Elo) or 27 points (1 point for the annual 2006 standings) what happened to be a shared ranking by 8 people. If you think something is incorrect let me know.

May-22-06  YouRang: I would like to thank <Assassinater>, <Ezzyr>, <hitman84>, <THE pawn> and <WannaBe> for making the bottom feel less lonely.

I thought I was being REALLY clever to pick Ponomariov to finish first. What an idiot.

May-22-06
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: Ponomariov was certainly a player, most people lost points on. But most was lost undoubtely on the biggest surprise, Gata Kamsky.

Here the deviations per player from the contest manager:

Deviation
102,kamsky
50,ponomariov
49,anand
23,Topalov
21,Svidler
14,Bacrot

The least points were lost on Bacrot and Svidler.

These were their average predictions' rankings (YouRang average ranking report):

AvgPrediction,Player,HighestPred,LowestPred
1.42,anand,1,3
1.74,Topalov,1,3
3.52,ponomariov,2,6
3.52,Svidler,2,5
5.23,kamsky,1,6
5.26,Bacrot,4,6

May-23-06  Ezzy: <YouRang - I thought I was being REALLY clever to pick Ponomariov to finish first. What an idiot.> I am just slightly less of an idiot than you. I picked Ponomariov to finish second.

Thanks <lostemperor> for a great contest. Another disappointment for me, but who cares, I am buzzing because I have just won my first ever chess tournament. See The kibitzers cafe for my story. :-) :-) :-) :-)

Sorry, I am so happy, I can't stop smiling.

May-23-06  Montreal1666: Thanks <lostemperor> for all the work. Indeed Kamsky was the key. I knew he was going to make some noise!!! It seems he is getting back on track.

When is the next contest?

May-23-06
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: Am I mistaken here. But YouRang picked Ponomariov to finish second also, not first.

We agree then: Ponomariov is the idiot! :-)

And congratulations on your tournament victory Ezzy!

<Montreal1666> I will announce a new interesting predictionevent soon. The surprise I was talking about. Stay tuned!

May-23-06  Ezzy: <And congratulations on your tournament victory Ezzy!> Thanks mate. Once again, it is so much appreciated that you give your time for the benefit and pleasure of other people. Cheers!!
