Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

OhioChessFan: Anyone else been noticing that if you want to do well at the pair ranker you need to do a lot of equals?
May-09-13
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: <OhioChessFan> It happens but I don't think predicting equals will give you much of an advantage over predicting non-equals. Of course early in the tournament there are a lot of ties but with every round it is getting less. Jeff Sonas had written about the chances of equals being small in long tournaments. Also you need unexpected equals to score big but we will keep an eye on it 8-)

OhioChessFan: Maybe I shouldn't have said "a lot of equals", but I don't know if you can win picking no equals. I noticed it in the candidates. <Wannabe> dominated the contest but didn't win the pairs ranker. There were 2 big payoffs of $17 on 2 equal placings, with 4 people getting a $17 payoff each. Those 4 people ended up in 1, 3, 4, and 5 in the pairs ranker. Only one of them ended up in the top 5 of the other 2 rankers. Doesn't mean much of anything, but it seems to be holding true again.

Diademas: Funny you should bring it up <OCF>. I had just the same thought after I had made my predictions. Thinking that if I tied all players for first I would have had a good chance of winning the pair ranker contest. I dont know if its true, but I dont think you need many upsets, and there are allways a few.

Than again; when I won the pair ranking in the candidates, I actually had fewer pairs (2) in my predictions compared with <Wannabe> (3).

So I dont feel too sorry for winning ;-)

OhioChessFan: <Diad> you had an overall strong showing. Anyway, I guess it comes down to the right equals.
May-10-13
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: I looked at the large pay-off betting results of the candidates and <Diademas> won by predicting the unlikely tie of Aronian equal Svidler. Furthermore also Grischuk above Radjabov what was not the obvious choice then too. Only Gelfand equal Grischuk could have been expected but he did not bet on that. Of course you also need not to lose too much on the non-equals.

Diademas: I notice that <OCF> and <twinlark> has the only predictions without any "equals". That could turn out as a huge advantage if the field spreads out. Especially since they are in such minority.
