Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

Aug-05-13  WinKing: I have a question <lostemperor>. How long has your prediction contest been up & running?
Aug-06-13

lostemperor: <WinKing> I started from January 2005! Corus tournament won by Peter Leko and the predicition contest won by <suenteus po 147> and <Like a GM>There were a lot of people making their top 5 predicitons on the tournament page then and I thought of a systen how to process a countsystem for all participants. It was new and effective though simple calculating formula. Nevertheless, without the software made by <Youtrang> available for a few years still, I had to calculate every tournament player standings and each prediciton of the contest participants myself what cost a days work at the end of the tournament :-)
Aug-06-13  WinKing: Thanks for the info <lostemperor>. I didn't realize that these games had been going on for so long. There should be a section in chessgames that has the history of all the prediction games. I'm sure others will be as curious as I was wanting to know how these game got started.
Aug-07-13  The Last Straw: Hello everyone:
I feel very sad to announce that I may be unable to continue holding this prediction contest. A new taskload of work has taken over and I also have some important family matters to deal with. I know it has been such short time, and I have only been able to hold 2 competitions, but I still must make the change. When I first started the contest, I was completely clueless this was going to happen. If anybody would like to hold it in their forum instead, please copy all parts of my biography which are related to this contest and post a message in my forum. I will surely recognze you as the new runner of this contest.

Thank you.

Oct-31-13  NGambit: WOW! I'm in the Hall of fame! And I never knew :D

I guess I participated in the contest more than a year back and totally forgot about it. Accidentally bumped here today and was really thrilled to see my name up there. Yay!

Thanks <lostemperor>

lostemperor: I had to look it up myself <NGambit>. Slightly over a year ago you won the pair betting ranker of the Bilbao masters 2012! :-)
Nov-12-13  NGambit: How you doing <lostemperor>? And thanks for looking it up. I hope to be back for the TATA steel predictions, that should be fun :)

Btw, who are you rooting for in the WCC?

Nov-19-13
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: Okay I am. Played some classical games last weekend too!

I almost always root for the underdog, this being Anand ratingwise. But it would be good if we have a new WC Carlsen. This seems likely now that he is ahead two points!

Over three years ago I already put Carlsen in my best ever top 10 list. He was still a young boy then (19) and only had some great accomplishments for his age. He just finished a weak Olympiad. Nevertheless I put him on shared first place! Anand at 5th! Here at the Bent Larsen page.

Many think I was biased towards Carlsen then and my list was dubious at best. But even in 2008 when Carlsen was still 17 I put Carlsen at number 5 in my best ever list ahead of Kasparov (*estimate (this list was made before Carlsen won even one major tournament))! See Akiba Rubinstein Foolish then but not so much now I guess? ;-)

lostemperor: Congrats to Magnus Carlsen who won the World title! From his losses Anand could have scored draws several times but the challenger made it hard for him.
