Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: Yes I always do the GM group A (or is it now called master sectcion) since thats hard enough as it is <;)

I, not purposely, had a kibitz break. A lot has happened this season in chess, not in the least the title match between Carlsen and Anand which Carlsen won. Anand put up a strong resistance (even) more so than the last time.

The traditional <TATA STEEL CHESS 2015> is coming up (and we are ready to predict the outcome after a much needed rest)!

1. Carlsen
2. Caruana
3. Aronian
4. Giri
5. So
6. Vachier-Lagrave
7. Ding
8. Radjabov
9. Ivanchuk
10 Jobava
11. Saric
12. Hou
13. Van Wely

I don not know it this is the full list since 13 is not an even number? In the interview after winning Qatar, Yu Yangyi said he will be playing in Holland?!

lostemperor: Although it is not likely Yu will be playing at Tata A group next year. He will play at Gibraltar open right after. Most logical would be Grischuk who had a very fine year or no Russians are invited for the A group 2015 edition.

The January FIDE rating list is out https://ratings.fide.com/top.phtml?... I need to check out a few participants and hope to get my predictions out in a day or two (:

lostemperor: Note: the CONMAN software does not recognise abbreviations like MLV so mind to post the full name of the players, Vachier in this case, or I have to adjust them manually each time.

Oops! My bad. :) I could delete the above post (or rather, you delete it), but since you've already replied, it kinda doesn't make sense. I will correct it in the future though.

FWIW, here's the prediction with the correction:

1. Carlsen
2. Ivanchuk
2. Vachier-Lagrave
4. Aronian
5. Ding
6. Caruana
6. Giri
8. Saric
8. So
10. Jobava
10. van Wely
12. Wojtaszek
13. Hou
14. Radjabov

< Your method is good for some surprising rankings <Penguincw> :) >

Yes it is. It seems that I rather do really well in a contest, or really poorly. It does use some advanced strategy as well (for example, the lowest seed player won't usually finish last, unless it's Agdestein ;) ).
