Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: <TIMER> Kasparov wanted to leave the match before or after (I forgot) game 4 already!

That he didn't want to be there in the last game I agree. But that is no excuse at all, not put up a fight anymore. A shameless selling of the game of chess IMO.

lostemperor: <YouRang> sure, we'll do. Although I rather leave that up to you since your program calculates that:). Btw you are shared first in the Biel predictions!

Aug-04-06  YouRang: Yay! I finished first at something! (Okay, so I tied for first with 6 other people -- and only because I lazily copied <Saturn>'s predictions...)

<lostemperor> Since I didn't set up a contest file (YRC) for the final standings contest, so I can't produce the 'Average Ranking' report. If you prefer, you can email your YRC and CSV file for Dortmund, and then I could produce it here.

lostemperor: <YouRang> Okay, I have yet to delete the Biel files and make the Dortmund's.
Aug-06-06  chessmoron: <lostemperor> You are the lone one who hasn't predicted the final round of Dortmund.
Aug-07-06  YouRang: <lostemperor>, given the files you emailed to me, here are the average rankings of the players for Dortmund:

Average Ranking - 2006/08/07 10.08
2006 Dortmund Chess Tournament
Rounds: All [7 complete]

I've put three fictive participants. Elo (in order of rating), Betsson (in order of odds) and ChessBookie (in order of odds). The latter is in order of odds fixed by the joint participants of the ChessBookie game in Dortmund Sparkassen: Winner . The Chessgames Bookie odds were best of these three.

Aug-08-06  YouRang: Thanks <lostemperor>. I see that you came close to medaling in this contest. Dortmund 2006 has been good to you. :-)

I am fortunate to have finished in a tie for 5th, given that I predicted Aronian would win! :-(

WannaBe: Very interesting, 3 players, <YouRang>, <suenteus po 147>, and myself, tied for first in the Biel prediction, (along with others.)

The same 3 tied for fifth in the Dortmund tournament. Are we copying each other's post(s)?? =)

Aug-08-06  YouRang: <The same 3 tied for fifth in the Dortmund tournament. Are we copying each other's post(s)?? =)>

No - in fact, we each had different (but equally mediocre) predictions:

---suenteus po 147:
1.Kramnik,Leko
3.Aronian,Adams,Svidler
6.Gelfand
7.Naiditsch,Jobava

---WannaBe:
1.Kramnik
2.Svidler,Aronian
4.Leko,Gelfand
6.Adams
7.Jobava,Naiditsch

---YouRang:
1.Aronian
2.Kramnik

6.Gelfand
7.Naiditsch
8.Jobava

lostemperor: Guess what <YouRang> if I calculated the average standing in case of a shared prediction (of more than two), like I did before, and discussed in a post with <TIMER>, I would have taken shared third place with cromat :). But the way the CONMAN calculates could also have worked, and once did, to my advantage (in one tournament before if I remember correctly, erased now).

Dortmund has traditionally been a tough tournament to predict. Especially if there is only one round robin instead of two. No coming back from a loss anymore. Aronian has cost most points for many. According to the CONMAN:

Deviations per player:
Deviation,Player
112,Aronian
58,Gelfand
57,Svidler
29,Adams
29,Leko
26,Naiditsch
21,Kramnik
12,Jobava

The best prediction made on Aronian was 6th place. It was made by yours truly :). I figured Aronian cannot keep up the pace he had, in the Dortmund company he was this year. Lucky I guess.

Btw. <YouRang> wasn't bad himself in his game results predictions (in his forum). In the alternate scoring system he scored three bronze and one silver medal of the five!

Aug-14-06  Bobak Zahmat: Hey mate, during the World Cup in December we were kibitzing about the Football World Cup 2006 in Germany.

<<Nov-29-05 Bobak Zahmat>><lostemperor><Also in football, Kramnik style is more effective than Kasparov style hehehe> <<Not really often though. Certaintly not in a World Cup.Brasil is more like Kasparov style. If Italy wins the World Cup it would be kind Kramnik style.>>

And it turnes out that the Kramnik style was the best!!! So you were right!!! Congrats!

Aug-15-06

lostemperor: <Bobak Zahmat> Kramnik style has proven very effective against Kasparov. Kasparov said about (the young) Kramnik: "the most talented of all players I have ever seen". Kramnik showed that in beating kasparov in 2000 without giving him the sweet of a single win!

That doesn't necessary mean that I think Kramnik will beat Topalov though:)

Aug-23-06  Bobak Zahmat: <lostemperor><That doesn't necessary mean that I think Kramnik will beat Topalov though:)> Hopefully not :) This time it's Topalov's turn to win a match!
Aug-23-06  Bobak Zahmat: By the way, have you visited this website: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9caz..., there are some great video's of Blitz matches between Kramnik and Kasparov.
Aug-23-06  Ziggurat: <bobak> Great link, I think I've never seen a video with live blitz commentary before!
Aug-24-06  Bobak Zahmat: <Ziggurat> I hadn't either, but someone put this link on the kibitz page of Youth vs Experience. There are many video's of Kasparov.
Aug-24-06  hitman84: Hey guys check my bio,

*Chess Video Collection*

Aug-24-06  Bobak Zahmat: Tnx hitman, really great work!
