Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

The USCF representatives in Turin expressed their interest in the Candidates, but FIDE had not heard much from them since. The issue will be finalized during the Presidential Board meeting in Elista, during the Topalov-Kramnik match."> http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

lostemperor: In the "eve" of the World Chess Championship Match Kramnik vs Topalov some more bold statements on Kramnik from his predecessor Garry Kasparov. The source is the worldchesschampionship match book Kramnik vs Leko by Ray Keene.

After having said Kramnik is the greatest talent he has ever seen, Kasparov added this about 16 year old Kramnik: <There are a few strong players, but they do not play chess. They move the pieces. Kramnik on the other hand plays chess!">

For what it's worth Kasparov may have never heard of Topalov before then.Only two years later when a surprising Topalov beat Kasparov in the Olympiad.

These statements, as I also made at the Vladimir Kramnik page June 26 06 made me rate Kramnik over Kasparov if we look at talent and strength in prime years (Kramnik 1998- 2000). Kramnik should only be surpassed by Morphy, Capablanca and Fischer.

1. Fischer
2. Capablanca
3. Morphy
4. Kramnik
5. Kasparov
6. Karpov

Also I think Rubinstein and Anand should be in the top 10. Anand was never first but long second behind Kasparov. After that other worldchampions and Topalov follow. Topalov deserve a high ranking among them. He made more tournament victories than many world champions

If a ranking is made of duration of dominance in strength what also make greatness: Kasparov, Steinitz and Lasker would score highest.

Sep-15-06  percyblakeney: <rate Kramnik over Kasparov if we look at talent and strength in prime years (Kramnik 1998- 2000)>

Just in 1998 Kramnik lost 8 games (and the match against Shirov) while Kasparov was undefeated even though it was far from his best year. In 1999 Kramnik finished 2.5 points behind Kasparov in Linares (and behind Leko in Dortmund), apart from being eliminated by Adams in the Quarter Final of the FIDE World Championship. In the tournaments before and after the 2000 match he finished behind Anand. So I personally find it hard to rate Kramnik's 1998-2000 as better than Kasparov's best years...

Sep-15-06  percyblakeney: ...Kasparov also finished far ahead of Kramnik in Wijk aan Zee both 1999 (when he won 7 games in a row) and 2000.

lostemperor: <percyblakeney> Fair enough I was not quite correct. Anand had the best results in 1998 and Kasparov showed still being the best in 1999. Kramnik peakyear was around mid 1999 and 2000. Unbeatable for a record 84 games orso. And what is less known is that Kramnik in 2000 took over the number 1 spot from Kasparov on the PCA rating list (with an equal rating). While Kasparov was still #1 on the Fide list with about 2849. The PCA list give more value to recent games and Fide has not calculated the Kasparov Kramnik match as a boycot of that match for one thing. I don't know oif someone knows if that is still calculated. It should hardly make a difference anymore for his present rating but it is important for historical reasons. Kramnik's peakrating.
