Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

Sep-15-06  percyblakeney: <lostemperor> Well, at least Kramnik was good enough to beat Kasparov, and that's not too bad :-) He was a bit lucky though that Anand declined playing that match year 2000...

lostemperor: <kellmano> the candidates will be playing their matches and after that the eight winners will be paired again in matches in a semi-final I suppose. The four who come through this second round of matches will play a tournament for the world title next year together with the four qualifiers of 2005 Topalov*, Anand, Svidler and Morozevich.

* There is however already a small problem. I thought I read that the loser of coming Topalov vs Kramnik match will not play anymore for that title-tournament. So either Kramnik or Topalov is out for the 2007 worldtitle if I remember correctly though.

Sep-18-06  JDK: My prediction is :

Topalov (7) - Kramnik (5)

Many thanks for running the contest.

Sep-18-06  mikejaqua: Gotta admit that the Topalov - Kramnik match is a tough one to call. I'm gonna go with a tie. Sadly, if this happens, it means damnable tiebreaks.

Topalov - Kramnik 6-6 then Kramnik will win the tiebreakers.

Now where did this list of candidates come from? It looks like a 6 game match between each pair. Then does it go to another 6 game match between the winners and so on, until someone comes out on top?

Assuming a 6 game classical time control match:
Predictions for the Candidate Matches 2006:
1. Aronian - Carlsen 3-3 (fast tiebreaks in such a case?) 2. Leko - Gurevich 4-2
3. Ponomariov - Rublevsky 3.5-2.5
4. Gelfand - Kasimdzhanov 2.5-3.5
5. E. Bacrot - G. Kamsky 2.5-3.5
6. Grischuk - Malakhov 4-2
7. Polgar - Bareev 3.5-2.5
8. A. Shirov - M. Adams 3.5-2.5

Looking forward to more info. And to a lot of exciting chess.

"Science fiction"

"Doomsday" is one word = http://www.doomsdayguide.org/

"world champion" (add space between)

Remember Matrix 2/"Reloaded" = humans and machines work together, right?! ;>D

lostemperor: Ooops. Gee, thanks tpstar! Don't tell anyone but an alien I am. Correct me you must. Anytime!

<Matrix 2/"Reloaded"> can't remember much. I only saw bits and pieces of that. (But what English is wrong there?)

This might come as a surprise but I am not really fond of science fiction!

Sep-19-06  positionalgenius: <lostemperor>Karpov is 6th???
Sep-19-06

lostemperor: <positionalgenius> Yes. Since in this list I put Kramnik over Kasparov and Karpov just below. Where would you say Karpov should be?

lostemperor: <mikejaqua> the candidates came from the Fide short K.O. matches last year and 4 players from the bottom half of the WC tournament 2005. I think the 8 winners of the candidatematches will play anoyther round of match, although I assume it may be 8 games the next time. After that there will be a tournament of the four left with the top half of last year WC tournament for the title. Where the loser of the Topalov vs Kramnik match fits in I'm not sure.
Sep-19-06  JDK: Here's my predictions for the candidates too <Lost Emperor>

1. Aronian - Carlsen ?-?
2. Leko - Gurevich 4-2
3. Ponomariov - Rublevsky 4-2
4. Gelfand - Kasimdzhanov 3-3
5. E. Bacrot - G. Kamsky 5-1
6. Grischuk - Malakhov 4-2
7. Polgar - Bareev 3-3
8. A. Shirov - M. Adams 3-3

Sep-19-06  JDK: Doh, it helps if I actually fill them all out :-D

1. Aronian - Carlsen 2-4

Sep-19-06  positionalgenius: <lostemperor>Well its a matter of opinion to some degree, but here's my list, top 10 all time: 1.Kasparov(this guy dominated for 15 years)
2.Capablanca(dominated.made other masters look like children.) 3.Karpov(a great champion, won a phenomenal amount of tournaments) 4.Fischer(his reign was too short to make a correct assesment.remember,he only beat Spassky, and Spassky was past his prime in 1972) 5.Kramnik?(Only time will tell on this one.)
others are:Petrosian,Botvinnik and certainly Lasker.Anand was talented but doesn't belong in top-20 even. Topalov too early to tell.
There it is <lostemperor>,what do you think?
Sep-20-06  acirce: Here are my predictions for the Candidates Matches, whenever they take place.

lostemperor: <positionalgenius> In your list you have taken into account the duration of strength to make a great champion. I can in general agree on your list if you take that into consideration. I made a list what considers both the player's talent and strength in their prime/peak (about fifty/fifty of each). That leads me to another conclusion as I explained why.
Sep-20-06  suenteus po 147: My predictions for the forthcoming Candidate Matches:

1. Aronian - Carlsen 3-3 (Aronian wins on tiebreaks)

2. Leko - Gurevich 4-2

3. Ponomariov - Rublevsky 3-3 (Ponomariov wins on tiebreaks)

4. Gelfand - Kasimdzhanov 3.5-2.5

5. Bacrot - Kamsky 2.5-3.5

6. Grischuk - Malakhov 4.5-1.5

7. Polgar - Bareev 3.5-2.5

8. Shirov - Adams 2.5-3.5

Sep-20-06  positionalgenius: <lostemperor>Now i get it.:)

lostemperor: <positionalgenius> in short that was the list of top chess genius ever. (I adjust it a little).

1. Capablanca
2. Fischer
3. Morphy
4. Kramnik
5. Kasparov

lostemperor: I should give the whole Kasparov quote from the Kramnik vs Leko World Chess Championship Match book by Ray Keene on the chapter on Kramnik.

"The most talented of all players I have ever seen is Vladimir Kramnik. As far as talent is concerned he is definitely the number one. The 16-year old Kramnikalready plays good chess. He has a brilliant talent. There are a few strong players, but they do not play chess. They move the pieces. Kramnik on the other hand plays chess!" -- Garry Kasparov.

Kasparov didn't say Kramnik is a greater talent than him but I think if you look in his heart Kasparov envies Kramnik's talent. Maybe Kasparov, regrets having made that comment by now.

Sep-21-06
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: According to Kasparov I do not play chess. I only move the pieces. That is a fair statement! :)
Sep-21-06

lostemperor: It seems that anyone who plays chess can beat Garry Kasparov! (a fair statement also)
Sep-21-06  dimradil: My predictions :

Topalov - Kramnik 5-7

The candidates :

1. Aronian - Carlsen 3-3+
2. Leko - Gurevich 3.5-2.5
3. Ponomariov - Rublevsky 4-2
4. Gelfand - Kasimdzhanov 2.5-3.5
5. E. Bacrot - G. Kamsky 3.5-2.5
6. Grischuk - Malakhov 3.5-2.5
7. Polgar - Bareev 3.5-2.5
8. A. Shirov - M. Adams 2-4

lostemperor: Keep your predictions coming in today guys! Now something else. In some tournaments I have given a quizquestion regarding one of the players. I will compile those questions. For this occasion a World Chess Championship question.

Below you see the names of the fourteen classical World Champions divided into two groups. What is the one common factor of the world champions of group A what does not count for the World Champions of group B in their world chess championship matches?

You are of course able to find the answer in chessgames.com wonderful new feature HISTORY OF THE WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP. Starting with Steinitz-Zukertort World Championship (1886) (not yet completed).

WC Group A:
Capablanca, Euwe, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal, Spassky, Fischer, Kramnik.

WC Group B:
Steinitz, Lasker, Alekhine, Petrosian, Karpov, Kasparov.

I will give the answer sometime next week during the World Chess Championship Match.

Sep-22-06  capatal: I like Kramnik to win, it seem his historical record vs. Topalov favors Kramnik much more than marginally - Plus...

Who ever beat Kasparov without a loss and won the match (Kramnik). To quote Kasparov, " Kramnik plays Chess." (he does not just move the pieces, like so many others.) 6.5 to 5.5 minimum. <lostemperor>

Sep-22-06  diction: Kramnik-Topalov 6,5-4,5
my prediction

lostemperor: <capatal> I do think Kramnik's opponent also plays chess!

I personally am in favor for Topalov, the people's world champion, to win. Go Topa :)
