Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

Any prediction on the Kramnik
vs. Topalov final score?

Sep-22-06
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: My prediction was Topalov 6.5, Kramnik 5.5. I think Kramnik edge Topalov in preperation, Topalov has the better physical and fighting stamina.
Sep-22-06  DCP23: Prediction for Game 1 (Sep 23):
Kramnik - Topalov 1-0
Sep-22-06  Ezzy: <lostemperor:> Two great minds think alike -

Topalov 6.5 - 5.5 Kramnik

Sep-22-06  Joshka: Prediction for the match outcome:

Kramnik wins 7-5 with 6 drawn games.

  lostemperor: That is possible :)

The first game has been a fact. 1-0 Kramnik! This is not strange. The way it happened was. Oddly enough I have more confidence in Topalov now he has lost a game even than before the match. Topalov did well with the black pieces. Topalov must have prepared for the Catalan in this match as a possible "surprise" weapon of Kramnik. But he made a blunder at the end. Kramnik must now be regarded as slight favorite though (if he wasn't already).

lostemperor: A clash of two great minds.
Sep-24-06  DCP23: Prediction for Game 2 (Sep 24):
Topalov - Kramnik 1/2
Sep-24-06  brankat: What is the deadline for the Candidates Matches predictions? Thank You.
Sep-25-06  positionalgenius: The candidates matches have been cancelled according to a cafe kibitzer.I'm on the way now to verify.

lostemperor: <brankat> a good question. Assuming that the cadidate matches goes on, and I do so, the deadline will be the first game of the first candidate match.

lostemperor: Game two of the Topalov vs Kramnik match. My comment is identical to that I made on game one! Again it was a great game. Topalov is playing formidable having at least a draw and then a winning position when Kramnik blundered. He returned the favor with interest by totally giving the game away again like in the first :(. It is now 2-0 Kramnik!

Has this happened before. We all remember/know Fischer trailing 0-2 against Spassky. But that match was the first to reach 6 wins.

Has anybody make up for two losses (-2) within 12 games? Yes, Morphy did against Harrwitz (the successor in France of the best player St. Amant). Morphy manage to finish 5-2 with one draw. A more recent example was Botvinnik making up for a 0-2 start against the tbest player of Europe Salo Flohr 6-6 after twelve games. It looks very unlikely but not quite impossible for Topalov! :)

lostemperor: Ok here the predictions. First the people who predicted Topalov would win (I recount for the full twelve games) in order of points (for Toppy). This will probably not happen :(. Nakosonorense (7.5); percyblakeney, TIMER, guss inn, Dim Weasel, laisydaisy, JDK, kellmano, topista(7); YouRang, iron maiden, Montreal1666, lostemperor, larrwl, Ezzy (6.5).

Keep the hope alive guys. It could have been 1.5 - 0.5 for Topalov instead it is 2-0 for Kramnik :) . Next follows the people who predicted Kramnik to win!

DCP23 (7.5); diction, iWaNnAbAgM, Joshka, dimradil(7); acirce, chessmororon, where is my mind, positional genius, virginmind (6.5); danielpi, suenteus po 147, mikejaqua(6, after tie break).

I think it is still to early to congratulate you guys :)

lostemperor: I knew it was a tough and tricky question but does no one has a clue about the world chess championship question??

<What is the one important, unmistakebly, but hidden common factor that the world champions of group A share together, and doesn't count for the world champions of group B?>

You can also ask yourself What is the one common factor that the world champions of group B share together? Once you know it from group A, you know from group B and vice versa. Here are the groups

WC Group A:
<Capablanca, Euwe, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal, Spassky, Fischer, Kramnik>

WC Group B:
<Steinitz, Lasker, Alekhine, Petrosian, Karpov, Kasparov>

It has to do with their world championship matches but I admit it is a very tough one. I might not have known it myself. You may take a shot at it here if you like.

I'm sure you see a pattern. Steinitz lasker. Karpov Kasparov. But what do they share with Petrosian and Alekhine? What is the common factor of Capablanca and Euwe? They both lost to Alekhine in a title match. But no one else does. What does Botvinnik and Kramnik has in common? And does this count for Tal and the rest also? I'll be Back in a few days.

lostemperor: One time, halloween 2003, kibitzer Benjamin Lau asked this question: <If you had to choose one chess player to play for you against the "Devil," the stake being your soul, and you could't choose Capablanca, Kasparov, or Fischer, who would you choose and why?>

Well I chose Kramnik (the 2000 version) even if I may choose Capablanca, Kasparov or Fischer. See, Fischer may make demands no one will supply. Capablanca was plain lazy and Kasparov may just sell your soul to the devil. Would you put your soul in any of these three player's hand?

Besides you have to fight fire with ice ;)

Sep-25-06  positionalgenius: <lostemporer>FIDE has nothing on the candidates so I cannot confirm or deny the rumor. -top 35 chess geniuses-
Adams is only 28? Leko is only 23???
On the sell soul to devil I would take Capablanca in his prime.
Sep-25-06  positionalgenius: <Lostemperor>Confirmed. The candidates matches are cancelled.FIDE is proposing a 16 player round robin intead.See www.chessbase.com for details.
Sep-25-06  positionalgenius: <lostemperor>Sorry to bombard you with kibitzes but I have more info.FIDE is planning to hold the tournament in April 2007 and in Elista,of all places. What is FIDE's obsession with Elista? It will attract no spectators. Why not London,Hungary,Russia,Ukraine?

lostemperor: Candidate matches cancelled and turned into a round robin tournament?! <positional genius> it is the lack of sponsors that make them cancel the candidatematches and now hold a 16 round tournament in Elista. Cities were given time to bid for the candidate matches. I think they should have split the candidatematches and given it to different cities. For instance Aronian v Carlsen to Norway. Polgar v Breev to Hungary and Bacrot Kamsky to France or the US. That would have solved the problem and raise the prizemoney for each candidate (and make it a more attractive eight game match in the process).

Btw. the predictioncontest on candidatematches should be cancelled and turned into a tournament prediction contest. Sorry about that :(

Sep-26-06  JDK: Ah well. It wouldn't be FIDE without some bumps along the way. Am I guessing right that the winner of the candidates would end up playing against the winner of Kramnik v Topalov next time around?
Sep-26-06
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: <JDK> your guess is as good as mine :)

btw. the candidatematches are not quite off the table yet <"exact wording: "to hold all the matches or the tournament in Elista in April 2007", which leaves it unclear whether he would host the candidates matches as originally planned"> Well we'll see..

lostemperor: <positionalgenius> Adams is truly a genius but you have to ask yourself what had he done what others didn't have. Has he ever won Linares. Corus or Dortmund perhaps? These are all great geniuses on the list and one has to make a choice.

Talking about choices, would you really choose Capablanca to play the devil for you?! You have to take account of someone's personality. Capablanca must be more occupied in entertaining the beautiful women the devil will bring to distract him than concerning about your soul at stake in a chessgame. You should keep that in mind if you trust your soul to Capablanca!

This brings me to another story where I beat the devil in a game where each of us has to choose two chessplayers to play for us, giving the devil the first choice(s)! I will tell this someother day..

Sep-26-06  positionalgenius: <lostemperor>Capa would play the devil,he's motivated...its Alekhine after all.:)

Alekhine? the devil? Close enough :)
