Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: I left out the names from the runner-ups from the Kramnik vs Topalov contest (1 point) since I figure they might rather prefer not to be in the list (but actually they do of course). Also worth noticing is that if the Biel tournament was counted <percyblakeney> and <suenteus po 147> would have shared first place with an additional 1 and 3 points (the maximum points there) respectively (a total of 15 points). But I specificly said beforehand that Biel is not part of the 2006 contest but a seperate contest (and some would have been disadvantaged for not participating there) :-(

lostemperor: <positionalgenius> no you were not among the top 3 but just outside. You were among the runner-ups place 4-8! You predicted Kramnik vs Topalov 6.5-5.5. There were three winners who predicted 6-6, Kramnik to win the tie breaker, who got two points. You got one point. Like I said I didn't put the runner-ups or anyone, with an exception, on the 2006 winners' standings (but I did counted and added the points if they are already in it) since I thought that people may rather choose not to if that was the only time they participated and won, since it was from just one match (part of a bigger contest, including the candidate matches, what will take place this year maybe).

Jan-12-07  ahmadov: <positionalgenius: <Lostemperor>Ahh now i see... <ahmadov>You will probably win. Thats a good bet.> Thanks. But it is not that easy to predict because there might be someone with surprise results. At the same time, Anand, Topalov, Aronian and Kramnik are equally strong. It is difficult to know...
Jan-12-07  positionalgenius: <ahmadov>Kramnik is historically bad at corus, usually finishing +1 or +2,which isn't good enough to win.The only player I thought you messed up on was Navera.(he's 2719,lets remember)
Jan-12-07  ahmadov: <positionalgenius: <ahmadov>Kramnik is historically bad at corus, usually finishing +1 or +2,which isn't good enough to win.The only player I thought you messed up on was Navera.(he's 2719,lets remember)> I guess Kramnik will achieve a different result this time, as for Navara, he might be the underdog of the tournament. This is just what I think. Like some other youngsters, he also needs some experience playing with elite players in a tournament. We will see what happens...
Jan-12-07  positionalgenius: <ahmadov>Kramnik's still off-form,so I expect him to finish mid-pack. I hope I'm wrong though....
