Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

Open Defence: in what format should we post the predictions ?
Jul-03-07  YouRang: Okay, I think I set a record for overall prediction disaster in Dortmund 2007. I must not have been feeling well. I think I ate some bad karma.

Hopefully, I'm better now. Here is how I forsee things finishing in Mexico:

1. Aronian
1. Kramnik
3. Anand
3. Leko
5. Morozevich
5. Gelfand
7. Svidler
8. Grischuk

lostemperor: <Open Defence> the easiest way is in the format as given in my post (if I understand your question correctly). If a shared standing between players, the highest standing counts.

So from above example; if you think Morozevich, Leko and Aronian will finish all in third place, you post the following:

1. Anand
2. Kramnik
3. Morozevich
3. Leko
3. Aronian
6. Svidler
7. Gelfand
8. Grischuk

Hope this helps:)

WannaBe: Okay... Here are my guesses:

1. Anand
2. Kramnik
3. Svidler
4. Leko
5. Aronian
5. Morozevich
7. Grischuk
7. Gelfand

  Open Defence: 1. Kramnik
2. Aronian
3. Anand
3. Leko
5. Gelfand
5. Morozevich
8. Svidler
8. Grischuk

meaning Svidler and Grischuk will tie for the lowest points, Morozevich and Gelfand for the next highest points, Leko and Anand sharing 3-4 and Aronian finishing just behind Kramnik who will sneak ahead of the field...

in case any of the place numbering is to be changed please let me know but I guess the prediction is clear

lostemperor: <Open Defence> crystal! (but I will make that a shared 7 for Svidler and Grischuk for you). And welcome to the prediction contest:)

  lostemperor: Okay, here we go!

1. Kramnik
2. Anand
3. Leko
4. Aronian
5. Svidler
6. Grischuk
7. Morozevich
7. Gelfand

Jul-04-07  TIMER: Hello lostemperor!

I was away from this site (and all chess) for a few months so I missed the candidate matches unfortunately, and the final four turned out to be whom was most likely by ELO. Did not expect Aronian to struggle so much against Carlsen though! Kamsky I wanted to be in Mexico but I also like Gelfand who has similar long experience of matches and currently much better prepared, so I felt that it would be too much for Kamsky.

Don't under-estimate Gelfand just because he had a bad Dortmund- he was solid in the candidate matches so I think that he might be well prepared for Mexico too, so I think that he will be middle of the table.

Then again there are no weak links in the World Championship Tournament so I guess you have to predict someone to be last!

Thanks for still running final standing predictions, this next one is the big one for this year I think!

lostemperor: <TIMER> good to have you back! In fact the only person I'm sure about is Kramnik:) (and least certain I'm with Anand unfortunately). The candidate matches may have produced the four likely favorites but the scores, also in the first round, might been somewhat surprising! For several reasons, I would have picked Kramnik first for Mexico even if he finished last in Dortmund.
