Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: Note: for the best prediction on (surprise) Biel players, I took the average prediction standing since for instance if you put Carlsen on 1-3, you said that Carlsen would be equally 1st, 2nd and 3rd. For the overall predictions however the highest prediction standing counts in case of a shared standing.

lostemperor: Last year I did not count Biel for the annual rankings because I explicitely said I would not do Biel. This year I was looking if there was enough interest for this Biel contest. I think there was a representative amount of participants so I will count it for the annual standings. I would disadvantage players if I don't.

lostemperor: <WannaBe> thanks for suggesting a prediction contest for the Biel festival! It was a fun tournament. This doesn't mean you should win it though!
Aug-03-07  YouRang: <lostemperor> Thanks for hosting the contest. I see that I finished shy of the medals by just 1 point.

I suppose I'm expected to believe that this is just a coincidence after you finished just 1 cent shy of the medals in Betting Ranker, hmmm? ;-)

Aug-03-07
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: <YouRang> not only did you finish 1 point shy of the medals, you also came just 1 point shy of winning the funny ♙-award of 3rd biggest surprise since Carlsen, where you had a best/correct prediction, was the fourth biggest deviation behind Radjabov by only one point (26 to 27).

Don't for a minute think that this is a coincedence after you did a number on me of keeping me out of a medal in your Betting Ranker by one lousy cent!

Aug-03-07  percyblakeney: Well, maybe the Mexico predictions will turn out better:

1. Anand
2. Aronian
3. Kramnik
