Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: Corus 2008! And what a tournament it was. Pretty much unpredictable. Two decisive games in the final round: Leko and Gelfand won against Mamedyarov and Eljanov respectively.

Final standings Corus
1. L. Aronian, M. Carlsen 8
3. T. Radjabov, V. Anand 7½
5. V. Ivanchuk, P. Leko 7
7. V. Kramnik, M. Adams 6½
9. S. Mamedyarov, J. Polgar, V. Topalov 6
12. P. Eljanov, B. Gelfand ,L. van Wely

The one who finished last in the previous game became the glorious winner of this Corus 2008. He has done it before (and the revenge must be sweet ;-)). Bravo!

lostemperor: Fine predictions <TheGladiatres>, You were best on Carlsen standing (1-2). Predicting him on shared 2nd place (2-3) just slightly better than <YouRang> (2-4) and <messachess> (3),

As for me this final standings prediction contest use to be the hardest for me. I usually do better at other prediction contests like finishing 4th at the User: yourang Betting Ranker, 2nd at several moves predictions rankers of User: chessmoron despite great competitors and 3rd at the ChessBookie Introduction despite this bloodbath of Corus in the last weeks.

I managed to make money out of a recession. Like slightly over 9 grands in two weeks :-)

Jan-28-08  YouRang: Thanks <lostemperor> for running the standings prediction contest. The cards didn't fall into place for me this time -- Carlsen was too good and Gelfand too bad. :-(

Congratulations on the double 4th place finishes in Standard Ranker and Betting Ranker. If the Olympics ever introduce the "tin medal" for 4th place, I'll be sure to add them to your medal collection. :-)

Jan-28-08  YouRang: Predictions for Linares..

1. Anand
2. Radjabov
3. Carlsen

lostemperor: <YouRang> if fourth place became the highest possible result, I would be great!:) You did win the consolation prestige ♘-Award on second upset Topalov, ahead of <ahmadov> and <DCP23>.

As for Carlsen I knew he can do it. Heck, like I said before also in my best ever list, I think he is better than Kasparov. I just didn't expect he can pull it off to win a top-tournament now already! Carlsen surprised everything and everybody a magazine wrote

Jan-29-08  YouRang: Yeah I had a feeling that Topalov had not yet returned to his 2005 form. :-)

My predictions were as follows (* indicates severity of mis-prediction on my chances of doing well)

1. Anand [not bad]
2. Gelfand [ouch!]***
2. Carlsen [good]
2. Kramnik [poor, but everyone made this mistake]
4. Ivanchuk [pretty good]
6. Mamadyarov [what was I thinking?]**
7. Radjabov [I underestimated him]*
8. Topalov [very good]
8. Polgar [very good]
8. Aronian [very bad]***
11. Leko [pretty bad]*
12. Adams [not great]
13. Van Wely [good]
14. Eljanov [good]

Oh well -- On to Linares!
