Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

Jan-16-08  whiteshark: <lostemperor: <Topalov on shared 12-14 place as expected. He usually is a slow starter:) The good news is he already played Van Wely and Polgar (and scored 0.5 against the latter)! >>

Is there a tang of subtle irony in it?

Jan-16-08
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: <whiteshark> not necessary I think! Topalov was often a slow starter in tournaments and he lost frequently to Judit Polgar last years (3-1 in their last classical 4 games I guess). Against socalled lower rated players as van Wely, where he has had a 19-4 lead according to this database, he might sometimes try to win hard with black also taking extra risk with it. It;s the psycological advantage or in Topalov's case disadvantage if I may say. All this with the utmost respect for Van Wely and in my humble opinion of course:)
Jan-16-08  Elixir of Life: <lostemperor> Have we ever seen ELO THIS low in the table? Or CHESSBOOKIE this high?
Jan-16-08
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: <Elixir of Life> the ELO order usually doesn't score high in the predictions where it was always a part. CHESSBOOKIE game on the other hand, which has only participated for several times in the last two years orso, whenever there was data available, does score significant higher mostly. I also used to include the Betsson bookie odds in the prediction game. Mostly they do about the same as ELO.

I also checked the Betsson odds but only a few hours before the tournament and this was the order:

Betsson odds

1. Anand 3
2. Kramnik 5
3. Topalov 6.5
4. Aronian 12
4. Ivanchuk 12
6. Mamedyarov 12.5
7. Leko 14
8. Radjabov 16
9. Carlsen 20
10. Gelfand 25
11. Adams 30
12. Polgar 40
13. Van Wely 50
13. Eljanov 50

I will include this in the rankings. At the moment they are at shared 16th place with 73 points.
