Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

FINAL STANDINGS PREDICTIONS

Kibitzer's Corner
< Earlier Kibitzing  · PAGE 47 OF 285 ·  Later Kibitzing>
Feb-01-08  ahmadov: So I finished 6th for the Corus contest, right? That is not too bad...
Feb-01-08  ahmadov: Now my predictions for Linares:

1. Radjabov
2. Anand
3. Carlsen
4. Topalov
5. Aronian
6. Ivanchuk
7. Leko
8. Shirov

This must be the most precise ranking by the end of the tournament IMO...

Feb-01-08  ahmadov: <lostemperor: Nice work on the photos <ahmadov> > Thanks!

<During games you may only take photos from the audience area.> Yeah, I understand the problems of taking a good picture... Before taking pictures myself I thought people were wrong when they spoke about a professional photographer... I used to believe that everyone could take professional pictures... But when I had to take a picture myself, I realized that taking a picture is a profession indeed :-)

As for the pictures I posted, I think you had quite difficult problems of not being allowed to be closer to the scene... But still I like the pictures you sent to me...

lostemperor: Nice work on the photos <ahmadov> (not to mention your predictions aswell)! Like I said I have to get used to those digital cameras still. Two years ago I took a lot of photos of Magnus also. Maybe I have them still somewhere:). Not this year as you have to stay in line to get the good spots to shoot them (besides he lost to Leko that day:). During games you may only take photos from the audience area and I haven't got the patience sometimes:)
Feb-01-08  ahmadov: Now I think things are a bit messed up... I mean the posts above are other way round :-)

lostemperor: Oops, I corrected my post <ahmadov>:) The point is I only had a cheap camera. Today I hear those cameras have got stablizors and all. The "lens" opened for half a second(!) instead of 1/100 of a second orso to make good photos. So I had to take inventive measures (and patience) to get the good shots!:)
Feb-01-08  ahmadov: <lostemperor> For some time, I contemplated buying a good digital camera and go to a professional to train me... I thought I needed that for my reports for chessbase.com... However, I gave up later because I thought that I was very busy with other things as well, particularly my job... So you are quite right - a good camera can solve a lot of problems, yet one also needs to get some lessons from professionals...

lostemperor: <ahmadov> I had lessons from professionals! I mean I used to read books (like Carlsen:). I know quite something on photography but they were all those ordinary cameras with film in it. you're right I have to learn about those digital technique still!
Feb-01-08  ASKALTAMAN: 1-Vassily Ivanchuk: won three times Linares - 1989, 1991 and 1995. He is also the player from the field with most games played at Linares (163) and the player with the best percentage of wins/losses (54,6%).

2-Viswanathan Anand: is the current Champion.

3-Veselin Topalov: Topalov shows strong performance in round robin events, so we should not discard him as a possible title winner.

Those are the three favorite players to win the 2008.

4-Peter Leko: In Linares he has 98 games played with 9 wins, 9 losses, and 80 draws. This stats are clear enough, to get a victory against Leko in Linares is very difficult.

5-Magnus Carlsen: a step away from entering the top 10 for the first time.

6-Alexei Shirov.

7-Teimour Radjabov.

8-Levon Aronian.

Feb-02-08  ahmadov: <ASKALTAMAN> Radjabov 7 and Aronian 8??? You are risking to end up in the last place in this contest...
Feb-04-08  Aurora: Linares 2008

1.Shirov
2.Leko
3.Anand
4.Topalov
5.Ivanchuk
6.Aronian
7.Radjabov
8.Carlsen

Feb-05-08  ASKALTAMAN: This my point of view, i'm not risking anything. I've notified most the players with

1.experience
2.motivation
3.preparation and finally status.

Feb-06-08  yalie: unlike Corus, it is so hard to predict who will be last in Linares ..

Linares 2008

1.Anand
2.Topalov
3.Carlsen
4.Shirov
5.Ivanchuk
6.Leko
7.Radjabov
8.Aronian

lostemperor: <whiteshark: "Those who have knowledge, don't predict. Those who predict, don't have knowledge." --Laozi> Nice saying. Counts for me :) This Linares seems even harder to predict than Corus was to begin with.

1. Topalov
2. Anand
3. Leko
4. Ivanchuk
4. Carlsen
6. Aronian
6. Radjabov
8. Shirov

lostemperor: The discussion between <ahmadov> and <ASKALTAMAN> brought me an idea. How about the rankings in order of "EXPERIENCE" and "YOUTH"?!

Here the EXPERIENCE (age) order:

1. Ivanchuk
1. Anand
3. Shirov
4. Topalov
5. leko
6. Aronian
7. Radjabov
8. Carlsen

Experience did well in the World Chess Championship tournament with Anand, Gelfand and Kramnik on the top three spots.
