Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: YOUTH, in the form of Aronian, struck back in the last minute time scramble (while EXPERIENCED Shirov took his time)!
Feb-20-08  YouRang: <lostemperor> Interesting idea adding YOUTH and EXPERIENCE. I presume that's just ranking them by age? :-)

I'm not sure I understand the difference between ELO and ELO VIRTUAL though..

Feb-20-08

lostemperor: <YouRang> I think the battle between <EXPERIENCE> and <YOUTH> has never been so close. After CORUS, where YOUTH clearly won, contrary to the World Championship tournament, it was clear that we have a real battle. So that's why after a discussion between ahmadov and ASKALTAMAN I got the idea of putting these pseudo-contestant, the English word I believe, as you used to call them, in the PREDICTION GAME.

You can read back the order. Indeed I have chosen age order. I look also at amount of games in the database but that is almost the same order.

<ELO> is the rating in the January rating list. But after CORUS ratings have changed but has not been updated. frogbert has calculated the new February ratings and I have put them under <ELO VIRTUAL>, with the help of SwitchingQuylthulg into the CONMAN program.

You can read back the exact ratings order also. Hope this helps:)

lostemperor: Although at the bottom place, <YOUTH> gave <EXPERIENCE> a sensitive blow in round 5 when Carlsen beat Topalov with black. The Alekhine Defence still rules! (or is it "Alekhine Defense" as written mostly in sites and magazines, just to show you how difficult English is)

Like I said in an earlier post: <"Especially after the Corus results this Linares will be heavily contested I think. Give or take a few short draws also Leko will be highly motivated">. At least I was right about this. Different than the times when just scoring +2 and drawing the rest was enough to win Linares when Kasparov was still around. Those lazy days are over :)

lostemperor: That even Leko is highly motivated showed. Leko usually doesn't lose with black let alone with white. Not even to Kasparov. Now he lost twice with white! He is willing to take more chanches now. This is the way chess is supposed to be played. Play to win at all cost with white. Even if it means losing. Unfortunately it didn't work out for him here.
