Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

Mar-09-08  rogge: <lostemperor>, Thanks for hosting the contest, great fun :)

I'm honoured to become a member of your Hall of Fame, with so many distinguished kibitzers...

Congrats to the winners!

Mar-09-08  Ezzy: Thanks again for the prediction contest <lostemperor> and the dedication for running it for such a long time. It adds a lot of fun to these supertournaments and is much appreciated. Cheers!!

So I have my second 'hall of fame win' Yeah. I'm thrilled to bits. Makes a change from my aweful Wijk an Zee effort, where I did unforgivable things like placing Aronian 12th of 14 players. Well at least I have learnt from my stupid mistakes.

Time for a celebratory drink. Cheers mate, see you around.

  lostemperor: Thank you, all die-hard predictors. Without you there would be no Prediction Game!

  lostemperor: For the surprise players rankings. here the total amount of points predictions deviations per player:

74,Carlsen
73,Radjabov
66,Shirov
64,Leko
63,Topalov
62,Aronian
57,Ivanchuk
35,Anand

Many have predicted a high standing for Carlsen. He is predicted a second place on an average 3,64 standing by the prediction game contestants (like in the ChessBookie game)! Behind Anand and slightly ahead of Topalov. Nevertheless, Carlsen, like in Corus, is still the biggest upset (in a positive way).

  lostemperor: ♗-Award for best/correct prediction on first surprise player CARLSEN.

<bumpmobile>
<CHESSBOOKIE>
<DCP23>
<DrawingisLife>
<iron maiden>
<percyblakeney>
<rogge>

They all predicted Carlsen on a correct 2nd place!

  lostemperor: ♘-<Award> for 2nd upset RADJABOV, who finished somewhat lower than his predicted 4.31 on average.

<DCP23>
<iron maiden>
<Ezzy>
<whiteshark>(!)

A prize anyway for <whiteshark> :). All have a correct prediction of Radjabov 5th!

  lostemperor: ♙-Award for 3nd upset <SHIROV>, who finished somewhat lower than his predicted 6.23 on average. Many had a close prediction on Shirov but one contestant had a correct one:

<Comandente>

A shared 7-8 place for Shirov.

Mar-10-08  YouRang: What was the overall expectation for Leko? I figured that most people would have expected him to do much better than last place.
Mar-11-08
Premium Chessgames Member
  lostemperor: <YouRang> yes, yesterday I was wondering about Leko too. And since you ask now..

Below the average players'prediction ranking BEFORE I put my <ALL TIME GREATS>, which raised Carlsen's average standing since he is first there, into the CONMAN software:

Rank,AveragePrediction,Player,highest,lowestPred-
iction

1. 1.92,Anand,1,7
2. 3.76,Carlsen,1,8
2. 3.76,Topalov,1,8
4. 3.97,Aronian,1,8
5. 4.24,Radjabov,1,7
6. 5.46,Leko,2,8
7. 5.84,Ivanchuk,1,8
8. 6.22,Shirov,1,8

The average predictor of the prediction game did not have a high expectation from Leko.

Even more surprising: I put this order as <AVERAGE> into the program and it was ranked second in the absolute ranker one point behind CHESSBOOKIE and first in the SQUARE RANKER with 135 points, one point ahead of CHESSBOOKIE and the winners, who made fabulous predictions with totally only 6 points deviation. Even squared!

Amazing! :)

  lostemperor: For the rest on the battle between the pseudo-contestants:

<YOUTH> beat <EXPERIENCE> by six points, what is less than the 22 points at Corus. But is this perhaps the last serious battle between these two?

<CHESSBOOKIE> beat <ELO> by 16 points(!) and <ELO VIRTUAL> by 9 points

<Red October> beat her alter ego <Open Defence> by 4 points. But this is only because Red October is a cheating commie hehehehe.

Second best prediction on Corus second upset TOPALOV 9-11 (1st place YouRang):
