Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: Short scientifical statistical summary of MTel 2008!:

After heavy losses in Corus, Linares and BakuGP, age <EXPERIENCE> has success again vs <YOUTH> or <CHANGE> if you will:). Pseudo-contestant <CHESSBOOKIE>, the chessgames bookie betting game odds order finally got some challenge again from <ELO> the rating order. It usually does better than ELO and here also it did in the square ranker.

May-19-08  YouRang: Thanks <lostemperor> for running the contest, but I must apologise for stinking up your contest with my performance.

Speaking of that, I would also like to express my appreciation for <DrawingIsLife>. ;-)

== POST-MORTEM of my lousy prediction:

1. Topalov [2] (not bad, but hardly original)

2. Aronian [5t] (lol)

3. Bu [5t] (I think Wang Yue's win in the Grand Prix somehow influenced me to think that Bu would do well too. How dumb is that?)

4. Radjabov [3] (not bad)

5. Ivanchuk [1] (Groooaaaan - what WAS I thinking? Well, I was thinking he's maybe over-the-hill and always in time trouble. Surely he'll be the big disappointment...)

6. Cheparinov [4] (Funny, I suspected that he'd get whomped twice by Topalov, so I put him last. Well, he DID get whomped twice by Topalov (and also by Ivanchuk), but he did well enough against the others - especially Bu - to stay out of the cellar).

May-19-08  nimh: so only couple of minutes separated me from getting 2 third places...

lostemperor: For the 2008 ANNUAL prediction standing, the system of <firebyrd>:

Award accumulated points for being:
1- top 50%
2- top 30%
3- top 20%
4- top 10%
5- winners
6- single winner

I combine the absolute ranker with the square ranker. The best result of the two will be given

lostemperor: <YouRang> I finally broke the spell that contest managers cannot win their own contest. My contest-manager buddies, you, cu8sfan and me, never won any main prizes in our own games. But we do win in contests in other forums. As it turn out now, it is possible to win your own game! ;-)
May-19-08  NakoSonorense: Thanks for running the prediction contest, <lostemperor>.

Surprisingly enough, I am yet to win in here...

Wonder if I'll ever win... It's just so hard to predict! I don't know what to do!

May-20-08  ahmadov: Hello <lostemperor>! Today is the birthday of Max Euwe, you hero of all times...
May-20-08

lostemperor: <NakoSonorense> it took me also some three years to win a major prize here;) Let's put it this way ELO has also only won one silver, in this time.

<ahmadov> Max Euwe is certainly still the main chess person of the Netherlands, though I doubt many chess player know today is his birthday. I only know some chess players' birthdays by heart especially around March. March 9, March 12(!), March 15 and of course April 13. I'm sure you know most of these too. We don't have many heroes here what doesn't mean we aren't a proud nation:)

lostemperor: For the annual standings: it speaks for itself, not everyone has played all 4 tournaments. That's why there is a seperate medal ranking.
May-22-08  ahmadov: <lostemperor: <ANNUAL 2008 STANDINGS> (top 50% in one tournament or more): <ahmadov> leading!> HURREY!!!

lostemperor: I found this link from a Dutch chess magazine. It is hillarious. This is a weekly live telephone chess game on a Manhattan TV broadcast http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=PT4US... . The hosting babe doesn't seem to know much about chess. Same goes for the one who operated the chess engine:)
May-26-08  brankat: Hilarious indeed! Thanks for the link.
