Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

"Here Garry Kasparov calling. I live in New Jersey, most of the time and hate your show. Still would like to make a move!" :)

May-30-08  ahmadov: <lostemperor: Zahir, my club now is in the same place where I played my immortal game with you! ;-)> You will have a lot of challenges there with those brillinatly playing men...

lostemperor: <ahmadov>, I scored a nice win yesterday on the white side of the Benko gambit in the first round of the competition. I might submit the game to chessgames :)

lostemperor: If anything, it is a fungame to watch
P Tjioe vs P Regeer, 2008.

Enjoy!

Jun-06-08  ahmadov: <lostemperor> Great win! Congratulations! I am looking forward to visiting The Hague and playing a game of chess with you in September!
Jun-06-08  ahmadov: By the way, do you think I met Regeer there? I think I do not remember him...
Jun-06-08
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: <ahmadov>, Paul Regeer is a frequent visitor of the chess club. However he wasn't there the time you were if I remember correctly. His rating was always higher than me untill recently when he dropped to 1815 Dutch rating what is usually over 100 points lower than FIDE ratings at this level.

Looking forward meeting you in September and playing a game of chess! You better be prepared ;-)

Jun-18-08  ahmadov: Hi Patrick! You also seem to be very busy not to visit this web site frequently lately...

lostemperor: Watching football and doing some dance class! :-)
Jun-19-08  ahmadov: I think the Dutch team are playing the best football in the championship...
Jun-20-08
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: Zahir, I knew the Dutch team would come far. After a lot of critisism I expected the players to be very motivated what is half the game or more. We also have the most effective, if not the best strikers on the field!

The Portuguese and France were good but they are already out of the tournament! Maybe it could be Holland vs Germany in the final:-)

Jun-20-08  ahmadov: <Maybe it could be Holland vs Germany in the final:-)> I also think so, but I would love to see Turkey in the final, which is least likely...

By the way, I started rooting for the Dutch team after meeting some friends in The Hague... ;-)

lostemperor: Hahaha. I think the real test of the Dutch team is the semi-final. That will be against Italy or Spain (the Netherlands has to overcome Russia first who is not afraid of us). Turkey has a great fighting spirit. They always have! If the final is Holland vs Germany, it will be Holland. There is no doubt about that! :)

lostemperor: Zahir, you must have enjoyed yesterday night when Turkey did it again and beat Croatia! I hope Turkey will beat Germany too. I'm sure most Dutch do:)
Jun-21-08  Red October: I hope its a Russia-Netherlands final like '88
Jun-21-08
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: <Red> October let's hope so! Russia has a Dutch coach, Guus Hiddink, probably the most successful coach there is.

Although now that you mentioned it, in 1988 Russia was still part of the USSR. But then again, we chess players know the Soviet Union has seized to exist as one kibitzer once correctly noted! :-)

Jun-21-08  Red October: <(the Netherlands has to overcome Russia first who is not afraid of us)> hmm that means a Russia - Netherlands final is not possible :(
Jun-21-08  Red October: but the matches have been very interesting
Jun-21-08  nescio: <but the matches have been very interesting> Referring to 1988 or 2008?

The Soviet team of 1988 can't possibly be called Russia. I think they had 7 or 8 players from Dynamo Kiev.
