Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: Oh yess, the Netherlands vs Russia European Championship quarterfinal football match is tonight btw. at 20.45 (18.45 GMT +1)!
Jun-21-08  ahmadov: <lostemperor: Zahir, you must have enjoyed yesterday night when Turkey did it again and beat Croatia! I hope Turkey will beat Germany too. I'm sure most Dutch do:)> That was great indeed! Like almost every fan of the Turkish team, I also lost my hope when Croatia scored first, but Turks did a great job... The last two games were miraculous indeed...

I think it will be very difficult for Turkey to win against Germany but anything may happen and nothing should be ruled out as we learned from the last two games played by Turkey...

By the way, yesterday some Azeris took to the streets at 3 o'clock in the morning after Turkey won Crotia in shoot-outs as they did after the game with the Check Republic...

lostemperor: Yes it would be a miracle again if Turkey beat Germany with something like 7 substitutes. But it has happen twicew before.

Something I had somewhat taken into account happened. The Dutch lost to Russia 3-1, deservingly so. If it's is any consolsation it was also a success of Dutch coach Guus Hiddink. He did it again and reach a semi-finals with four different countries. tne Netherlands, South Korea, Australie (quarter-final) and now Russia in EC and WC!

TheAlchemist: <lostemperor> And don't forget he won the Champions Cup in 1988 and reached the semifinals in 2005 with PSV (+ 6 domestic titles) among other things.

lostemperor: Now we will be rooting for Russia, Turkey, Italy and even Spain:)
Jun-22-08  ahmadov: Something that I would expect to happen least likely - Russia beating the Netherlands... This must be the most surprising championship in the history of football in Europe...
Jun-22-08  rogge: <This must be the most surprising championship in the history of football in Europe.>

How about Denmark winning the title in -92? They weren't even qualified, but stepped in on short notice.

Russia and Spain are the most entertaining teams. A pity thy can't meet in the final...

Jun-22-08  ahmadov: <rogge: <This must be the most surprising championship in the history of football in Europe.> How about Denmark winning the title in -92? They weren't even qualified, but stepped in on short notice.> Nice you noted that... When I said "most surprising" I just did not think about the surprising winner/s but also amazing and unbelievable games like Turkey vs Check Republic, Turkey vs Croatia, Croatia vs Germany and Russia vs the Netherlands...

By the way, if we speak about the winner, then Greece winning the 2004 championship was another surprising outcome...

Jun-22-08  rogge: <if we speak about the winner, then Greece winning the 2004 championship was another surprising outcome.>

Absolutely.

This is the most entertaining championship I've ever seen.

lostemperor: There were a lot of nice games where in the past I've seen a lot of boring games! What bring me to the quote of the week "Football is like chess, only without the dice." Lukas Podolski http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... Agree or not:)

lostemperor: Announcement: due to circumstances there is no Dortmund final standings prediction game this year. Probably there will still be more contest(s) this year!

lostemperor: It seems, the Germans did need the dice to beat the Turks yesterday, in the last minute!
Jun-27-08  ahmadov: <lostemperor: It seems, the Germans did need the dice to beat the Turks yesterday, in the last minute!> That was a big disappointment for me... I think Turks played a great game despite the fact that key players were not playing...
Jun-27-08  suenteus po 147: <lostemperor> I'm sorry to hear there will be no final standings contest. Hope everything is okay with you and yours!

lostemperor: <suenteus po> I'm OK, thanks! Dortmund is a short tournament and late this season. <ahmadov> the highly favorite Germans had a difficult time against this somewhat handicapped Turkey!
Jun-27-08  Aurora: I am sorry to hear we do not have a Darth Maul prediction game.
Jul-03-08

lostemperor: Darth Maul? Sounds familiar! Dortmund has been very interesting although chance is a greater factor in a short 7 round tournament like Dortmund than a 13 round tournament. In football this time, the best team, Spain, has won Euro 2008!
