| Nov-09-13 | | virginmind: <moronovich> Sorry to hear about your minor health problems, I wish you a swift recovery. I'm fine, thank you. Yes I like listening to music (I don't play any instrument), mostly symphonic and some rock. That avatar contained a keyboard, yeah, so it's possible I've chosen it as music related, but to be honest I wouldn't describe my interest in music quite as huge. It's just very big :). This spring I've upgraded my listening gear, but made a mistake - instead of getting a stereo amplifier and 2 speakers, I thought it would be fancier to buy a AV receiver and 5 speakers. Mistake because the suround sound is mainly for movies and much less suited for music - at least not for the stereo one, and the vast majority of music is recorded in stereo. I'll see what I'm gonna do, either sell the receiver and speakers and buy a decent amp plus 2 speakers, or, keep the 5.0 system for movies and buy a cheaper amp (and ocasionally connect it to the two front speakers I have) I was not aware of <achieve>'s special interest in music, is he playing some instrument? 3 hours to go till the first game starts, but unfortunatelly I'm gonna miss the first couple of hours as I've got some stuff to do. and I'm not gonna be at home. |
|
| Nov-09-13 | | achieve: <virginmind> My best instrument in fact still is my vocal chord, but I am very enthusiastic about playing the piano, and half decent at it. Addicted to the sound of the instrument though (probably since birth! ;), and to those (few) that know how to play it "really" well. I idolize Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum, but also revere highly Nina Simone, Randy Newman, and Nat King Cole; they all have (had) the golden touch, though all different. And several Classical pianists as well, of course, starting with Rachmaninoff. |

Nov-09-13
 | | moronovich: Good morning <achieve> and <virginmind> ! 26 minuttes to go - no more predictions and thelike-now the pieces will do the talking. Let us enjoy the moment and see you later.
Sicilian or Ruy Lopez !? Or ? |
|
| Nov-09-13 | | achieve: Wow - incredible tension minutes before it started in the playing hall, Carlsen almost in a praying position behind the board, minutes there in the room before Anand, who arrived at the board literally 5 seconds before 9:30 GMT !!!!! What nerve! That's some psychological signs for ya right from the start! ;) Carlsen open 1.Nf3 and follows it with a double Fianchetto!!! |
|
Nov-09-13
 | | moronovich: Yeah what tension.
And what an opening..Magnus seems to work on his strategy which is long games.I somehow like dxc4 from Anand. |
|
| Nov-09-13 | | achieve: You did? I thought getting a flank pawn in the center would be good for MC, but already Anand's activity with Nb6 is interesting, provoking c5, rendering Anand the d5 square for the knights.... ? perhaps? Also Risky, the space advantage, so these pawns must be broken up again, too... |
|
| Nov-09-13 | | achieve: Now Anand has a draw in hand, by repetition, after less than 90 minutes of play... now <that> would be an anti-climax! At least for the spectators and the Carlsen Camp, Vishy would be more than happy, I'd assume. Maybe Anand is looking if there is something better, but in his position I'd save energy, take the draw, "thank you very much, IS THIS ALL YOU GOT?" Draw agreed as I type. |
|
Nov-09-13
 | | moronovich: Yes an anticlimax we may say.
And back in the sattle tomorrow,as for today was a good day at the office for Anand and good news for those who want an even and a balanced match. So thank you for stopping by and for your comments.Hope to see you tomorrow
and wish you a good saturday !
And moro will finally have time to go shopping with wify, which i am shure she is found of ;) Poor <virgin> - hope you will find the time tomorrow.(You didn´t miss that much today IMHO). |
|
| Nov-09-13 | | virginmind: <achieve> Oh I see, great, nice stuff. Not to mention its very important to do (ideally as a job) what you really like, the thing that it's your passion. I too like Rachmaninoff, and also Brahms, Schubert and a few others. <moronovich> Actually I've managed to return home earlier than expected, some 20 minutes after start of game - so I've seen most of it. Yeah, a bit anticlimactic, but what can you do, as both said, draw was the best choice given the position on the board. Let's hope tomorrow it's gonna last longer (at least). But we also have to understand that a WCC (of only 12 games) it's very tensed situation and one cannot afford the slightest mistake - so I imagine the last thing they're thinking/caring about is our hopes for long and highly disputed games, if possible with 'fireworks' :) |
|
| Nov-10-13 | | achieve: <virginmind> <its very important to do (ideally as a job) what you really like, the thing that it's your passion.> I'm a part-time piano tuner, so I get to spent a lot of intimate time around and with a variety of specimens of my favourite thing/instrument to be around, work with, and get as good a sound out of it as possible by tuning, intonation, small repairs etc. ... <GAME ONE> Possibly the most disappointing game ever on that WC stage that I can remember, really big oversight by Carlsen allowing the "crisis" as he called it, forcing him to pull the emergency break... but as the song goes: Things Can Only Get Better Forgot the name of the band..;)
About two hours to go! Anand with the White pieces. What opening might we expect to see? |
|
| Nov-10-13 | | achieve: * spend
present time |
|
| Nov-10-13 | | virginmind: <achieve> Cool! Lucky&happy guy! :) My niece got a piano for her birthday and she's exercising a lot daily - I suppose it was already well tuned. Yeah, I suppose Magnus wasn't happy with the way things went on his first white day. I wonder if Anand has this strategy - block him right from the opening for all his white games. Provided it's possible of course. But I doubt. It would be like an aknowledgement that he, Anand, has no other chance against Carlsen than to force draws. He wouldn't do that at home, in front of his public. |
|
Nov-10-13
 | | moronovich: Good morning gents !
Have just arrived and see a Caro Kann,to my surprise.Sometimes it looks almost playable as here after Qxd3,but of fcourse Magnus knows what he is doing :). Let us enjoy !
This looks like a longer game with perhaps a decissive result.
And has Carlsen adjusted to the great pressure and attention...!? |
|
Nov-10-13
 | | moronovich: I like the pieces the play with (simular to the Saint Luis model). And Susans voice and accent reminds me of two of the first girls I knew. Both from Hungary.Good teen memoires. Still a position with a much higher chance for a winner than yesterday.
After Ng3-Ne4. |
|
| Nov-10-13 | | achieve: Heh - I used to copy Karpov's C-Kann back in the day, on 1.e4, along with the Scheveningen Sicilian, but truth be told that though I feel a familiarity of course with the structure and the LSBs movement/swap - but this position - as we are almost looking towards endgame structures, I have yet to immerse in. It has gone so fast!! MC still in prep, or he better be! ;) |
|
| Nov-10-13 | | zarg: Anand display some nerves too, Carlsen should get into the comfort zone now. :) |
|
| Nov-10-13 | | achieve: So here we are, 45 minutes played, and we have reached a position where most GMs would agree to a draw... hmmmm me do not like this, looks like another short morning here, the hyped match almost in need of getting hooked up to respiratory equipment!! Good grief...
<Comfort Zone>?
More like a comfort "ocean"?
This is ghastly, draw by repetition twice in 2.5 hours <combined>!! BOOOOOO |
|
Nov-10-13
 | | moronovich: Hi´<zarg> !
What a prominent visiter we have here today ! You have been missed here..
How are you doing these days ?
And a very fine broadcasting on NRK I may say.Ann excellet way to get chess out to a broader audience and I hope they will bear with the short draws. A good result for Magnus and the psycological score seems to be evenedout after yesterday. At the pressconference Magnus seems to really be in the zone IMO.Like he has adjusted to jetlag adn especially all the hype and limelight. <achieve> : yesterday I was slightly dissapointed as today, but when I dig deeper I think it is OK and that I also create my own expectations and the reverse. But I am longing for a long game. p.s. the scheveningen was(also?)my main weapon back in the heydays. |
|
| Nov-10-13 | | achieve: Well - if they do not get it over the 2 hour mark, let alone the normal 4 hours, then something is off, either in prep or OTB, whatever it is. At least Vishy apologized, and the new buzzword now is "settling in", which at this rate will take a few more games still... Usually the highly energized players not knowing their opponents prep and opening choices make for very exciting and often decisive first games, but this time it's different. Carlsen comparing it to the first two rounds in the candidates, where he was nervous as well, but really this preparation and opponent do not really merit a comparison to the candidates, but the similarity is striking. |
|
| Nov-10-13 | | zarg: Hehe, <moro> I am doing very well thank you, and I think two short draws is a perfect start for Carlsen. We all know his fighting spirit, those emergency breaks is not exactly his trade mark, the young better save the fireworks for later. Most was surprised Anand played 18.Dxd5, but nothing to whine about, Anand's safety first ain't a shocker. :) Yeah, NRK is doing a fine job bringing this event to the public, I don't even have to turn on the TV by myself! |
|
Nov-10-13
 | | moronovich: Hmm <Settling in>.. One has to learn something new everyday,n´est pas !? Hopefully they have settled before game 12 ;) The guestions at the pressconference are sometimes really strecthing my patience, like the players also seems to show...All these long long questions
were in the end it is almost impossible to reestablish the point(s)/the meaning originally intended ):
Mais au contraire cést la vie-aussie.
Enjoy your sunday and say hello to Jimmieboy from me ! |
|
| Nov-10-13 | | achieve: <moro> Timmieboy says hello back! Yes - it is new territory for MC, and Anand is feeling his way in, but a worse start, also from a promotional standpoint is hardly imaginable, eg wrt to the internet viewers from around the world. BUT that will not bother the players, and in a way this makes for a tension and energy loaded finale - IF THEY SETTLE IN AROUND GAME 8 OR 9! It feels weird, as if it hasn't really started yet, and now they play a 10-game match. (after warm-up exercises and a "rest" day.) |
|
Nov-11-13
 | | moronovich: Morning <achieve > ! Thanks for your thoughts and they pretty much cover my own. So let us hope the players have DRAWN (;) their conclusions.A third short draw would not bee good for global promotion. I will go to the big town of Århus and look forward too see you again.
Or rather should I say : Let us settle in-in the most constructive way.Nést pas !? |
|
| Nov-11-13 | | achieve: Yes, we will!!
Tuesday 10:30AM we will again be expecting the gladiators, especially the young norwegian, to start delivering, and do what the preparation and the pre match quotes were meant to convey: fight, exhaust, probe, 'til slutte', in Carlsen's own words. |
|
| Nov-11-13 | | achieve: <So let us hope the players have DRAWN (;) their conclusions.A third short draw would not bee good for global promotion.> I think the number of hits and enthusiaistic followers must have dropped by at least 50% by now, especially among those relatively young or those new-ish to the game, IF there are any of those left at all... Imagine setting your alarm clock in the middle of the night to catch the 3rd and 4th hour of play, and the screen is just blank. But they can not serve two masters, and have to wait from genuine inspiration from CAISSA herself, otherwise a third short draw might very well be the next result. It's funny how the truly greats, in their prime, just force their will upon the situation, not just the opponent, and grab their moment to shine without hesitation. In that respect it was interesting to see Carlsen go down to Svidler in the candidates last round - AS WHITE - for two losses in a row when it most mattered. No One ON THE PLANET could have predicted that, but it did happen, and it did tell us a lot about what that tension - at that point in time - did to Carlsen. |
