Some chess books that I think are outstanding:

1. <Fundamental Chess Endgames>, by Müller & Lamprecht, reprinted 2020. 400pp+, £25.

2. <Secrets of Practical Chess>, by Dr Nunn. 256pp (the USUAL 256pp!, i.e. the usual 2^8). £20.

3. <Capablanca's Best Chess Endings>, Irving Chernev's best work. 300pp. £15.

4. <107 Great Chess Battles 1939-1945>, written by Alexander Alekhine, but edited by Edward Winter. 256pp, £15.

5 (a) <Petrosian Year by Year Volume 1 (1942-1962)>, and - Karolyi & Gyozalyan, 484pp.
(b) <Petrosian Year by Year Volume 2 (1963-1984)> - Karolyi & Gyozalyan, 516pp.
They are £34 each. I bought one, then a few months later, the other volume.
They are available in Kindle format!

6. <The Queen's Gambit Accepted: A Sharp and Sound Response to 1. d4> by Chris Ward.
Ward wrote a superb book about the QGD, many years ago. I think this is useful for a book about the QGA. A total antidote to 1. d4, 2. c4.

And now some total clinkers. NOT those well-known garbage chess books.

The following are really bad chess books.

1. <Capablanca: A Compendium of Games, Notes, Articles, Correspondence, Illustrations and Other Rare Archival Materials on the Cuban Chess Genius Jose Raul Capablanca, 1888-1942> by Edward Winter. 360pp. c. £35. The title is the best thing.

2. <Larsen: Move by Move> - Cyrus Lakdawala
Paperback, 488pp.

3. <Emanuel Lasker Volumes 1, 2 & 3 - Forster, Negele & Tischbierek>. £55 each.
This book is unbelievably boring and tedious. Just look through it, then forget about it.
AT THIS SAME TIME a totally superb book has just come out: <Emanuel Lasker All Games Volume 1 & 2: 1889-1940 (2 books)>, £55 for two books:
Volume 1 covers the time Lasker became World Champion and played matches against Steinitz (twice for the World Championship), Bird and Blackburne amongst others. He also took part several famous tournaments including Hastings 1895, St Petersburg 1895-96 and Nuremberg 1896.

Volume 2 covers the time Lasker played matches against Marshall, Tarrasch, Janowski, Schlechter and Capablanca for the World Championship. He also took part several famous tournaments including St Petersburg 1914, New York 1924, Moscow 1935 & 1936 and Nottingham 1936.

Hardbacks, 388 and 342 pages, Russian Chess House. A real bargain.

4. <Pal Benko : My Life, Games and Compositions>, £140. Who is the most famous chess player out of Benko and Fischer? Who published the most plush, most opulent book? Benko.

.....
Here are another 7 books:

<He received a letter from his bookseller, informing him that only seven copies had been sold, and concluding with a polite request for the balance.
Scythrop <[SKI-throp]> did not despair. <Seven copies,> he thought, <have been sold. Seven is a mystical number, and the omen is good. Let me find the seven purchasers of my seven copies, and they shall be the seven golden candlesticks with which I will illuminate the world.>.>

offramp: In 954 a plague struck Calabria. All places of worship were shut.

The monks left that area. Three of them took the first available boat, an expensive journey.

They travelled north and alighted at Genoa. They found themselves unwelcome. Many people did not believe that they were monks. Some people think that they had the plague.

The three monks decided to carry on north, to Cologne, where they had heard that one of the most splendid cathedrals were being built.

They had suffered great privations on their journey, but in 955 they arrived in Cologne.

These three monks were named Ramvel, Brando and Okey.

Here is a perfect example:
https://www.cherrytreecountryclothi...

That is a bloody awful mac.

There is a great mac, worn by .... Adolf Hitler! Not my favourite human, but he had a good mac. I think it had no buttons, just a belt. It was a sort of mustard colour.

Anyway, I have a really good mac, very similar to Columbo's. It's from M & S, and it's really good.

In a standard 220ml bottle there's about 8 chilis.

What about wine? A 70cl bottle needs 700 grapes.

offramp: < 🥣 AZOTABARBAS: The Traditional Manchegan Soup You Must Try 🧡

Azotabarbas soup is a traditional recipe from Chinchilla de Montearagón (Albacete). Its unusual name comes from the thick noodles that, when eaten, would "whip" diners' beards. Today I'll show you how to make it step by step, respecting tradition and with a spectacular flavor. Don't miss it!

📝 INGREDIENTS (serves 4 or 5):
🍖 100g Serrano ham
🌭 2 chorizos
🧅 1 large onion
🍅 1 medium tomato
🧂 Salt to taste and garlic
💛 Saffron threads and La Vera paprika
💧 Water
🍝 Thick noodles
🫒 Extra virgin olive oil >

I only had normal ham, and I had no chorizo, so I used Walls Sausages. I had no saffron so I used yoghurt. I completely forgot the noodles.

It's a very good recipe.

I got a response at YouTube, by the OP:

This is not a horror film. I think it is a thriller. I think one person is killed in the film.

The great Stephen King✞ didn't like the film so someone else made a closer-to-novel film.
At the end of that <THE BOILER OVERHEATS>.

offramp: <OhioChessFan:> that list is really funny! I agree with most of it.

<Catch 22> - for me, it was useful to watch the film, with Alan Arkin, then everything was clearer.

Ulysses has some very good bits, but it is a very big book!

I really like <100 Years>, though.

The other books are very very slow-going!

The book is good, and the film is good.

The book ends with the hotel boiler exploding.

The film ends with the guy lost in the big hotel maze.

Troller: <OhioChessFan: I'll take a shot at the worst books ever. I admit it'll really be the most overrated books ever.>

Not a big fan of Stream-of-Consciousness it seems. I could probably agree on Kerouac, Coelho and Gillian Flynn, maybe also Alice Walker; at least I would definitely prefer Toni Morrison over her. The others are actually among my favourites.

One to add might be <Catcher in the Rye>, I taught this in high school once and I struggled to see what the fuss was all about. Maybe just outdated though.

<Stephen King> has a vivid imagination but I am not exactly overwhelmed by his writing skills. However, there are many excellent movie adaptations of his works, like <The Shining>, <The Dead Zone> or the new series <The Institute>.

offramp: The Old Trafford no the <other> Old Trafford. I am here for the Minor Counties Semi-Final: Shropshire versus Cheshire.

I am in a Premier Hotel, over-looking the whole city centre. From my window, I see thunder-clouds, borne on the wings of the whirlwind, floated, at fits, athwart the sky; the rising fierceness of the blast sighed through the stunted shrubs, which, bending before its violence, inclined towards the rocks whereon they grew: over the blackened expanse of heaven, at intervals, was spread the blue lightning's flash; it played upon the granite heights, and, with momentary brilliancy, disclosed the terrific scenery of the Alps, whose gigantic and misshapen summits, reddened by the transitory moon-beam, were crossed by black fleeting fragments of the tempest-clouds.

The rain, in big drops, began to descend, and the thunder-peals, with louder and more deafening crash, to shake the zenith, till the long-protracted war, echoing from cavern to cavern, died, in indistinct murmurs, amidst the far-extended chain of mountains

The solemn tones of the old cathedral clock have announced mid-day; the air is thick and heavy. A strange, death-like stillness pervades all nature. Like the ominous calm which precedes some more than usually terrific outbreak of the elements, they seem to have paused even in their ordinary fluctuations, to gather a terrific strength for the great effort. A faint peal of thunder now comes from far off. Like a signal gun for the battle of the winds to begin, it appeared to awaken them from their lethargy, and one awful, warring hurricane swept over a whole city, producing more devastation in the four or five minutes it lasted, than would a half century of ordinary phenomena.

I knew instinctively that the Semi-final had the Salop v Cheshire been postponed.

As I call it <The Catshit in the Eye>. There are some bits that I think they are <really> good:
He thinks about his Mum asking about a million stupid questions about a typewriter, but she bought the wrong one.

And the teacher examined Holden's essay like it was a piece of @#$%!

I like Stephen King, but the FILMS are always better than the books.

But in The Stand, here is a great episode:
A fractious driver picks up a hitch-hiker, and gives him a bottle of Budweiser, but he drops it.
The driver is enraged and says, <Do you think they are still making that stuff??>
That's funny, because in North America there are probably 2 billion bottles of Budweiser on shelves!
