Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Michigan was fortunate to win. The Ohio State quartreback missed on at least four passes with a receiver wide open behind the defense. If they go up against a team like Stanford, they are going to get clobbered.

And, as far as I know, Michigan has never dared to have a wolverine mascot. Nasty animals, and they don't hang around here anyway. When one was spotted near Ubly in 2004, it was the first sighting in the state in 200 years.

If a Stanford mascot dies, is it reincarnated as a goalpost?

Nov-26-11  Jim Bartle: Here's the actual Stanford tree, the "Palo Alto," many years ago. It stands, or stood, alone, and had been struck so many times by lightning that it really does look like a high stick.

WannaBe: Looks like I am doing the USC-UCLA game the ol' fashioned way, listening to it on the radio, via internet...

WannaBe: <JB> http://player.cumulusstreaming.com/... you can listen to it...

I can't find an UCLA station, (Imagine that!!!!!) But found an USC station. To add insults to injuries.

Phony Benoni: UCLA. You don't hear LA.
Nov-27-11  hangingenprise: at least <michigan> can score points on the football field. wannabe <bruins> can't score even if they were lead to the opposing teams end zone. of course that on probation <usc> defense does put obstacles in the way.

WannaBe: I think <hangingenprise> is the reincarnation of e.e. cummings. =) After half-time, I went to bed, finished 11/26/63 that new Stephen King tome, 850 pages worth, also finished Micro, the new M. Crichton book. Last one he worked on before he died. (The book was eventually finished by R. Preston, of 'Hot Zone' fame. Ebola, non-fiction, good read.)

A new M. Connelly book The Drop is out tomorrow, Det. H. Bosch series. Then I am debating which one to tackle, the new R.K. Massie book on Catherine the Great, or read the 50th anniv. edition of W. Shirer's Inside Third Reich. Or maybe read Van Gogh, the Life.

Got about 4, 5 books sitting on my coffee table, just waiting, screamin' to be read. Leningrad by Anna Reid, and Death in the City of Light, a serial killer non-fiction in occupied Paris in WWII. So many books, so little time.

So, what good NFL game we got today? Early games aren't all that interesting, Chi-Oak/NE-Phi could be the games to watch. Pit-KC could be as bad as the UCLA-USC last night, could be over by 2nd QTR.

Monday Night Football should be a good one. Looking forward to that one!!

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> Now you know why I don't have a coffee table. No time to read. Need to get back to round 9 of the 1955 US Open in Long Beach, God-Forsaken California, with Albert Sandrin about to take on Paul Brandts.

WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> Some of the locals still talk about that tournament, albeit infrequently, and hazy memories. I think it took place at the downtown arena(?!). Don't think the convention center or the concert hall was built yet.

My ol' home, Long Beach! =)

WannaBe: Houston Texans (8-3, #1 in the AFC South Division) have lost their starting quarterback M. Schaub, and now Matt Leinart have hurt his throwing shoulder.

Initial X-ray is inconclusive, awaiting further test results, better have Brett Favre on speed dial, because your other two QBs are T.J. Yates and Kellen Clemens.

"Play-offs, you want to talk about play-offs?!"

Phony Benoni: I hear Dan Pastorini is available.

By the way, if the locals remember Long Beach 1955, they must remember the Great Tiebreak Controversy. If not, see here:

WannaBe: Most people that remember the tournament, only remember because it was a Chess Tournament. None of them really followed chess, some that did, only started following because of Bobby Fischer.
Nov-28-11  King Death: <Phony Benoni> They could get Dan Fouts out of the booth too.

That 1955 crosstable brings back memories of some of the players who were around when I started playing a bit later on.

Phony Benoni: A couple of cases of post-concussion syndrome? At first it sounded like a pro wrestling promo, but it escalated into reality.

But what do you expect from a league that used to not allow blocking on punt returns?

I got to watch a lot of CFL here in Detroit, and it's really a lot of fun. More wide open, with only three downs to make ten yards and twelve men on each side, plus there's always the chance of scoring a rouge on a long kick. Nothing like having a punt returner kicking the ball back so as not to give up the single point in a crucial situation.

Nov-28-11  Jim Bartle: Joe Kapp! I'll wager I'm the only one on this thread who saw Kapp play at Cal. I saw him four or five times, we idolized him.

He remains the last QB to lead Cal to the Rose Bowl, where they lsot.

Phony Benoni: After further review, I'm becoming convinced the "fight" was a set-up. Angelo Mosca became a professional wrestler after his football days, so he knows how to get knocked down convincingly. And, by a truly remarkable coincidence, he just happens to be releasing his autobiography this year.

WannaBe: Yes, Rick is fired! And UCLA is only 30.5 points underdog to Oregon for Friday's night fiasco game.

Thirty and a half points... Will it be as ugly as 50-0?
