Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Nov-28-11  Jim Bartle: Interesting career: assistant coach at Colorado, gets head job ahead of the guy apparently in line for the job, wins lots of games with Kordell Stewart, leaves job for $$ at Washington, fired for betting big in NCAA basketball pools, lands UCLA job, loses a lot, fired.

Oregon is going to absolutely slaughter UCLA.

Phony Benoni: And I might point out that Detroit Mercy wound up winning the game 94-93 in overtime.

Now, I'm not saying anything in particular here. But I'm just pointing out that the Detroit Mercy University Academic Services office where the student athletes study is on the third floor of the Library, just down the hall from my office. And that I often ride up in the elevator with some particularly tall people. And sometimes we talk a bit.

Now, I'm not saying I'm giving them tips on playing basketball. No, I wouldn't say that. But you can think what you want. The evidence is all there.

WannaBe: Here is an exclusive conversation between <Phony> and some 'tall people':

<Phony> Dude, you got to score more than your opponent!

Tall Dude: Opponent?! How you spell that?

<Phony> Nevermind... Push the button 3 for me will ya?

Tall Dude: Three? How you spell that?

Phony Benoni: OK, you caught me. In reality, I've played basketball voluntarily once in my life. (I don't count forced labor in gym class.)

I started college life at a conservative Christian school. Fraternities were not allowed, but we had "Social Clubs" which engaged in intramural competition. I usually showed up just to root.

One night, our basketball team was ahead by a point near the end of the game, but ran out of players due to foul trouble and pulled me out of the stands. The rules were a little hazy on points like that.

"What do I do?", I asked.

"Look just stay out of the way. But if they steal the ball and are going in for a lay-up, foul the guy so he has to shoot the free throws."

Naturally, the other team stole the ball. Whaddya want, they were playing 5 on 4.

But I was a loyal team member and did my job. I fouled the guy--by grabbing him in a bear hug and flinging him into the tumbling mats hanging underneath the basket.

That was the end of my basketball career.

Now, I'm not saying anything in particular here. And, as far as I know, Ndamukong Suh has never been on the UDM campus. But the evidecne is there. You draw your own conclusions.

WannaBe: After you flung the guy into the mat that hung on the wall to protect the basketball players, you stomped on his *ahem* and then apologized to the commissioner of the intramural league?

"But, Commish, the coach told me to do it!! Swear!" =))

This week, The Madden simulation missed 3 games, not tooooooo bad. But it does explain a lot about the BCS computers ranking.

Nov-29-11  playground player: <Phony Benoni> Did you see that youtube video of Joe Kapp decking former wrestling great King Kong Mosca? And after Mosca attacked him with a cane, no less. (I'll see if I can find it again and post it here.)

Eskimo Joe, you still da man!

Phony Benoni: <playground player> <Ohio Chess Fan> posted it here yesterday, or least the story. It really seems like a staged fight to me. Mosca just happens to have an autobiography coming out this year, and the publicity certainly won't do that any harm.

But I wouldn't put it past Joe Kapp to do it for real.

WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> Good catch, bud! That title for the article have to be wrong, I think they meant 11 times in the last 14 <GAMES>, not 14 years.

If the title is correct, that would mean Jax lost, on average .78 game a season!! Currently, Jax are 3-8 and last season, they finished 8-8.

Plus, the article mentioned that Del Rio is in his 9th season in Jax with a career record 69-73.

So the numbers really don't 'mesh'... Surprisingly, the editor or the article writer didn't bother to double check what they wrote.

(What else is new...)

Nov-29-11  Jim Bartle: The headline was really misleading.

I think it meant Jacksonville is heading toward its 11th losing season in 14 years.

Phony Benoni: I think the headline was just careless, not misleading. And I took it that they meant 11 losses in their last 14 games.

It's sort of like CG's Puzzle of the Day: you know something historic must have happened. As soon as I saw "Chapman SS" I immediately glanced over to the other side to see if the pitcher's name was "Mays". Sure enough, it was from the game in which Ray Chapman was fatally beaned.
