| Nov-30-11 | | Jim Bartle: Valentine and the Red Sox (especially the Red Sox' fans and the Boston press) just sounds like a really bad combination. |
| Nov-30-11 | | King Death: <JIm Bartle> Then there's Larry Lucchino, who has an ego like Valentine's. Terry Francona succeeded there for more reasons than one, but I get the feeling that he had enough finger pointing and tongue waggling after the collapse. If Valentine thought the NY press was bad (and they can be), wait until the Red Sox lose a game or two. |
| Dec-01-11 | | Jim Bartle: Years ago somebody sent me videotapes of Boston games which included pregame call-in shows hosted by the team's GM. The level of interest and knowledge of Red Sox fans. They not only knew every detail about the team's players, but they knew the Pawtucket players and the AA team's players as well. I can really only compare them to Giants or A's fans, and there's nowhere near the same level of involvement. Add to that the tough Boston sportswriters, who follow the executives' and the manager's every move, and it can't be easy to manage the Sox. |
| Dec-01-11 | | Jim Bartle: Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mike Piazza and Sammy Sosa will be on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time next year. I say only Piazza will make it this time. Barry Larkin will probably get elected as well, though maybe he'll have to wait another year. |
| Dec-01-11 | | technical draw: Roger Clemens would have been a shoo-in if not for all those "allegations"...... |
Dec-01-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Not to mention Bonds and Sosa. I think <JB> has it right; Larkin finished 2nd this year, and the "ineligibility" of other strong candidates has to favor his chances. I also see Jack Morris was 3rd last year, but with only 53.5%. I don't know if he can get a big enough boost. I did see that he had only one at-bat in his major league career, being an AL pitcher in the DH era before interleague play. Here it is: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... The Tigers were just fooling around late in that one. Of course, today Morris would surely not have pitched a complete game. |
| Dec-01-11 | | Jim Bartle: Without the steroid taint Clemens, Bonds and Sosa would all waltz into the HoF. It will be interesting to see what happens in voting the next few years. I bet it will eat Clemens up inside if he doesn't get in. He's one of the players most concerned about recognition and fame. |
| Dec-01-11 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony The Chicago Cubs are interested in Albert Pujols and Cecil Fielder. What chance do you think they have of landing either one with Theo Epstein in charge? |
Dec-01-11
 | | WannaBe: Sign Fielder, convert him to a catcher, he's got the girth, keep Sir Albert at first; and voila, instant Championship, just add champaigne. |
| Dec-01-11 | | Travis Bickle: <WannaBe> Mr Bunny I think we need some more pitching as well. ; P |
Dec-01-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis>, I rather doubt the Cubs will sign Cecil Fielder. At 48, he has a son old enough to be playing major league baseball. I'd favor Pujols in any event. |
| Dec-01-11 | | Travis Bickle: DUH! Sorry Phony I meant The Cubs are interested in Prince Fielder and Pujols. lol |
Dec-02-11
 | | WannaBe: http://espn.go.com/espn/page2/story... According to this article, UCLA did have a live mascot, albeit, it wasn't allowed on the side lines. (About 3/4 way down in the article...) |
Dec-02-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis> I would be really wary of giving a long-term contract to Prince Fielder. I remember his father losing his skill in a hurry, and he looks like the type that could happen to. |
| Dec-02-11 | | King Death: I'll go with Piazza and Larkin to get in next year. Morris will creep closer, but I think he's on the border. He was a tough pitcher at his best and has a few years left on the ballot, but I think his best shot will be with the Veterans Committee, just like Jim Rice and Dale Murphy among others. If one game had much impact, Game 7 in 1991 would have alreday put Morris in there. |
| Dec-02-11 | | Jim Bartle: True about Fielder. A lot of the overweight sluggers don't last all that long, Mo Vaughn being a good example. Then again, Fielder has never hit well when I've watched him, so maybe I'm misjudging him. 38 HRs, .300 BA, 120 RBIs, 107 BB; he's got to be hitting sometime. |
| Dec-02-11 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni>, <Travis Bickle> They're bringing back Cecil Fielder? You gotta be kidding! Last I heard, he was lost somewhere in that 50-room mansion he bought while playing for the Yankees. |
| Dec-02-11 | | King Death: When those one dimensional sluggers can't get around on the heat any more, they're done. You don't see the long slow goodbye. Jim Rice's last good year was at 33. He was done at 36. http://www.baseball-reference.com/p... |

 | | WannaBe: From You Can Take That CPU and Shove It Up the USB Drive Department (YCTTCSIUUDD) Madden simulation have Miami 16, Oakland 13. http://espn.go.com/espn/thelife/vid... Saints 31, Lions 24. http://espn.go.com/espn/thelife/vid... But it also had the Eagles beating the Seahawks. http://espn.go.com/espn/thelife/vid... |

Dec-02-11
 | | WannaBe: Totally Useless Information/Statistics.
Every single team in AFC West, even Oakland 7-4, Denver 6-5 have allowed more points than scored. Where did Denver come from?!!? Play-offs?! Play-offs!? |
| Dec-02-11 | | Jim Bartle: Seems every game Denver victory has been by three points, certainly no more than seven, while they've had a couple really big losses, more than twenty points. |
Dec-02-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <King Death> Comparing Jim Rice with somebody like Jim Thomé makes an odd impression. Rice was such a great physical specimen that you would have expected him to be a slugging threat for a long career, while Thomé looks more like a slowpitch softball player. Maybe the old-timers were right, and muscle-bound players aren't built for baseball. I remember how Sparky Anderson didn't like Lance Parrish lifting weights in the offseason. It did seem to help Parrish's durability as a full-time catcher. |
| Dec-02-11 | | King Death: <Phony Benoni> While we're talking about these near miss players, one I really thought was going to Cooperstown was Dale Murphy. The one thing I see that hurt him was his career average of .265. While I mentioned that Rice's last good season was at 33, Murphy had his final one at 31, even though he played full time until 35 and hung around for 2 more seasons after that. |
Dec-02-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <King Death> I see that Piazza is not actually eligible, since his last year was 2007. Here's the projected list: http://www.baseball-reference.com/a... A very weak first-year class; outside of Bernie Williams, it's hard to see any of those players getting a significant number of votes. That could be good news for other players near the top last year. I would say Jeff Bagwell and Lee Smith definitely have cases. Seeing Joe Randa on the list reminds me of his Immortal Game: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... That was the first game of a doubleheader. Apparently, Randa ran the bases so much that he was too tired to play game two, and this occurred: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... Murphy was one of the best players in the mid-1980s, but his career started slow and his productive years ended too soon. |
Dec-02-11
 | | OhioChessFan: There is some odd statistical anomaly-maybe hits in a month-where the answer is 2 obvious players and Joe Randa. I might have to search that out. |
