 | | Phony Benoni: I looked up some top performances of Buckner, and here's his lifetime best of 7 RBIs in one game: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... Of course, a few other players had good games that day, particularly Rollie Eastwick. |
| Dec-08-11 | | King Death: <Phony Benoni> When I looked at that crazy box score, the first thought that came into my head after seeing the 4-run inning was the unique feature of this recent NFL box: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/gametr... And this, a year after the first 11-10 game in NFL history. |

 | | WannaBe: Great, C.J. Wilson signed with Angels too!
Dodgers have announced they have signed Sandy Koufax to a 10 year contract, too. |
| Dec-08-11 | | Jim Bartle: Just think what Koufax could have earned if he were pitching today. Remember when he and Drysdale held out for a million dollars? That was a million for the two of them together. Here's a clip of Ron Howard talking about how he figured out he was earning more than Koufax when he (Howard, that is) was 11: "Life is not fair." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD7t... |
| Dec-08-11 | | Jim Bartle: I'll hazard a guess that the wind was blowing out at Wrigley during that game. A lot of amazing stuff in that game. Four Phillies came up eight times in ten innings. Kingman hit three homers, and another player (Buckner) had 7 RBIs, and the team still lost. I doubt that has happened many times. |

 | | WannaBe: According to http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/
the purse power of a dollar in 2000 (when A-Rod signed 252 million for 10 years with Texas), to match the same amount of purchasing power, Angels would have to pay Albert Pujols 331 million dollars. So, in another word, A-Rod is worth more than A-Pul! |

| Dec-10-11 | | Jim Bartle: Has anybody followed this trade which sent Chris Paul to the Lakers, or understand why it was disallowed? From what I read, the league decided the Lakers shouldn't be able to get such a big star in a trade, and that New Orleans didn't get enough in return. They basically got something for Paul since he'd already said he was leaving at the end of the year. NO is getting Odom (and a Kardashian), Kevin Martin and a first-round pick, though I don't know if that's a high pick or not. Not that bad, a lot better than the Warriors getting Connie Dierking, Paul Neumann, Lee Shaffer (who never showed) and Norm Cash for Wilt. What I don't understand is why the Lakers think it's so great. Yes, they might have gotten the best backcourt ever with Bryant and Paul, but they'd be left with a nothing front line: the inconsistent and oft-injured Bynum, and who? Gasol and Odom would both be gone, and you can't count on World Peace (Artest) as we all know. |

 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> Not sure if you know this, the N.O. Hornets is league owned, and a few other owners have voiced their disapproval of this trade. Hence, it was nixed. Currently, the NBA is trying to find a new owner for the team, much like NHL and the Phoenix Coyotes. |
| Dec-10-11 | | Jim Bartle: No, I didn't know that. Interesting.
I still think the Lakers would not be strengthening their team with this trade, unless they have reason to believe Gasol is starting to fade. |
Dec-10-11
 | | WannaBe: Few fans in LA have blamed Gasol's lack of play for their being swept by Dallas last season. Was it game 1 or game 2, when Lakers blew that big lead... And then in games 3 and 4 Phil Jackson was very unhappy with Pau. |
| Dec-10-11 | | Jim Bartle: Maybe he played poorly for a few games, but Gasol is a first-rate player. The Lakers were nowhere cloae to being championship quality until they stole him from Memphis. Just looked, and the other Chamberlain trade was even worse! Wilt to LA for Jerry Chambers, Archie Clark and Darrall Imhoff. Reminds me of George Carlin's sportscaster from 1964 or so: "Today the San Francisco Giants traded Willie Mays to the New York Mets, in exchange for the entire Mets team." |

 | | keypusher: <jim, wannabe, PB> Hi! Jim, here's Bill Simmons going off on the Chris Paul fiasco. You may find it interesting, though I'm sure you could have edited him down a little. :) http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id... The trade may be resubmitted with some minor tweaks, giving Stern a chance for a mulligan. http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/... |
Dec-10-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Albert Pujols off to a great start with his new team. Here's an excerpt from the press conference: <"But recalling the “love and the kindness” that were part of his life as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals for 11 seasons, he said, “I’m going to bring that here to the city of L.A.”> The fans in Anaheim did not appreciate that. |
Dec-10-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Lions? Tigers? Red Wings? Pistons? Who cares! Detroit has one team playing for the championship! http://thesouthend.wayne.edu/index.... Funny, when I attended Wayne State back around 1980, the South End was the counter-culture paper. They wouldn't have had a sports section on principle. Amazing what a winning team can do. BTW, one factual error: Wayne State was a 16-seed, not a 6. |
Dec-10-11
 | | keypusher: <Coach Paul Winters has his team in the finals — inconceivable after the home-finale loss to Findlay.> Where's Inigo Montoya when you need him? |
| Dec-11-11 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, since the winter stove meetings are going on here's some baseball literature for you. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/... P.S. Is there anybody out there worth it for The Cubs to sign? |
| Dec-11-11 | | King Death: <Jim Bartle> Stern shot down the original trade because he felt that the Hornets weren't getting enough young talent and picks to keep them going. The Lakers camp up with another proposal, then took it off the table because they traded Odom to Dallas last night. It's just as well anyhow. Like you said, the original idea would have left them with nothing up front at least in the short term plus a backcourt with two stars who've had knee problems. |
| Dec-11-11 | | Jim Bartle: That list of dumbest trades is a complete fraud. It was obviously put together just to cover up for the Giants and their long history of even dumber trades. |
| Dec-11-11 | | Jim Bartle: Bill Simmons? Editor? Not known to mix. |
Dec-11-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis> Haven't been keeping up with the Winter Meetings since it looks like the Tigers won't be active. Have the Cubs considered signing the entire Yankees roster? |
Dec-11-11
 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> He's been with ESPN.com Page 2 now for 3(?) years, just started the new web site grantland. In my opinion, he is not as good as other contributers on page 2, in terms of humour, depth and over-all sports coverage. My opinion though... Now, Sarah Phillips, she can marry me anyday!
Looks like Lakers have completely abandoned the deal with Hornets. http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/... My goodness, none of the early games are enticing, in the later games Oak-GB may be worth a peek or two, Chi-Den will keep <Travis Bickle> busy, but I really think the night game will be the best of the day. Forget about Monday Night's game, what a dud! |
| Dec-11-11 | | playground player: <Jim Bartle> The one that sticks in my craw, and which wasn't mentioned in the article, is the Giants trading Orlando Cepeda to the Cardinals for Ray Sadecki. That was the day the music died. Sending Hoyt Wilhelm, Ray Katt, Alvin Dark, and Whitey Lockman to the Cards, in 1955, for Idunnowho-buthedidntdomuch, was another bowel-wrencher. |
