Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Dec-12-11  Shams: <WannaBe> You can't even say that, as I understand-- they weren't "ownership" shares. They are pieces of paper with very expensive Green Bay Packer logos printed on them, that's all.

At that price point, in this economy? Really, Green Bay?

Army-Navy game, Saturday, Army attempted 6 passes, completing 4, for 77 yards.

Navy attempted 3 passes, completing 1, for 13 yards. Total, 5 catches on 9 attempts, and 90 passing yards combined.

Didn't they take 11 minutes to sell out, though? I'm sure P.T. Barnum never took pity on the customers just because the economy was bad. :-)

WannaBe: File this one under <'Huh'? What the *beep* Are They Thinking> Department:

The Ariz Cardinals (previously 5-7) won at home against the 10-2 SF 49ers, and then in this week's ESPN NFL Power Ranking http://espn.go.com/nfl/powerranking... , they dropped one spot.

Dec-14-11  Shams: <WannaBe> Agreed, the Cards have won five of six and deserve better. Switch 'em with Oakland-- something happened there a couple weeks ago and that team has turned into zombies. Poor Palmer, from Cincy to Oakland. It's like he's Philip living out an "Of Human Bondage" sequel, only his new bride (so full of goodness it seemed) shows herself to be an even worse version of Mildred.

Gotta love Clayton's comment about Chicago: "How bad are things going to be if Caleb Hanie and the Bears lose to Tarvaris Jackson and the Seahawks?" Why don't we find out?

Dec-14-11  Jim Bartle: Playing quarterback in the NFL is incredibly difficult. Still I'm surprised that so many teams simply do not have a competent player at the position, even with all the injuries. Not a star, just a competent passer and play caller at the line.
Dec-14-11  King Death: < Jim Bartle: All right! Monday Night Football!

Wait a minute: St. Louis vs. Seattle?? You cannot be serious.>

One of these teams won the NFC West (and a playoff game) last year, though I agree with you. Week 14 was loaded with crummy matchups on paper. The best of them made to Sunday Night Football instead.

Does anybody else remember how, a few years ago, the SNF game was usually a dumping ground involving two teams nobody cared about outside those two cities?

Dec-14-11  Jim Bartle: The Monday night game and the Sunday night game basically switched in importance a couple of years ago. Sunday's now the network game with Michaels and (now, replacing Madden) Collinsworth, and the Monday game is now sort of the JV game, with Jaworski and Gruden.

WannaBe: Don't know if you gentlemen (<JB> and <KD>) know this, NBC have the benefit of flex schedule: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_on...

While as far as MNF goes, the whole 17 weeks is announced, set in stone. So, a little bit riskier. Luck of the draw for ESPN and the MNF coverages...

Dec-14-11  Shams: <JB> Don't forget Mike Tirico on the MNF broadcast. A steady hand at the tiller. :)

<WannaBe> There's talk of flexing the MNF games next year too, hang the (major) inconvenience to host cities. The NFL is just ridiculous. That being said, as a football nut I'd be all for it.

In case anyone missed this week's Gruden profile:
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/...

Dec-14-11  Jim Bartle: Right, Mike Tirico. But the Monday night announcers are definitely second string to Monday night, though it's not quite as evident now that Madden has retired.

Madden never seemed the same to me on the night games. Just didn't fit. He was made for a big game on a Sunday afternoon.

I remember a funny quote about Gruden when he was coaching Tampa. Somebody asked Brian Billick of the Ravens what time he got to work, and he said, "An hour before Gruden says he does."

Phony Benoni: <Travis> Hast thou so soon forgotten the Damnation of Matt Millen?

OK, Gruden is a different case. At least he has head coaching experience. But as I recall, he's more of a quick fix guy who favors high octane offense. Will that be right for Chicago, even with your mild winters?

Dec-14-11  Travis Bickle: I predict when they give that Nincompoop Jack of A$$ 'Lovie Dovie' The Boot'!... The Bears will bring in Chucky!! How sweet it would be, a real football coach!!! ; P
